@wonderw86 Leos character Danny is from Zimbabwe. White Africans from Zimbabwe are not Afrikaans for the most part. The Afrikaans people are a group descended from Dutch settlers in South Africa. South Africa is a totally different country than Zimbabwe.

He didn´t get the Oscar because it´s not an American story. It´s difficult for the committee to understand where the character is coming from and what kind of emotions he represents.
The 32 Battlaion was the most decorated unit in the SADF. And yes it comprised of mostly blacks with white NCO's and Officers. It was truely one of the best Special Forces (if you can say that) units of all time. The men who served felt betrayed by their country when it was disbanded in 93/94. Still an excellent performance by DeCaprio in this film. I have to say one of his best.
In the original script Archer didn´t say:"It´s palmwine", he said "It´s goatmilk". I guess the directors figuered "palmwine" would add to his macho-persona.

i was so pissed about maddy and archer relationship in this movie they never got together and never even kissed this is so sad cuz they were obviously in love with each other ;( but the movie is AWSOME and this scene too one of the best in this movie it really shows the emotional evolution of the character thanks for sharing!! ;))

DiCaprio's character made me discover the fate of these white africans... I never heard about what they endured until now. And the denial or omission by the international community of their suffering as individuals, makes me sad.
I wonder how I would feel if my parents were murdered and I was stripped from my home fighting for survival. I'd probably punch in the nose, a journalist with good feelings that would come tell me that I'm a racist. I am more african then he will ever be.

i believe one would call him zimbabwean, in this context he is rhodesian. the accent however is constructed in the way people might expect a white rhodesian to sound like. i disagree with this version, there is no one rhodesian accent as with the South African accent. district 9 gives a better view of the rsa accent.
@SherbetLollipop the accent from d9 is specifically from Gauteng and around the east rand part of Johannesburg( someone who isnt a native eng speaker). to me he sounds a bit like someone from Natal.but I think most whites from SOUTHERN afRICAN COUNTRIES.- have a similiar english accent only the slang terms vary

DiCaprio's character made me discover the fate of these white africans... I never heard about what they endured until now. And the denial or omission by the international community of their suffering as individuals, makes me sad.
I wonder how I would feel if my parents were murdered and I was stripped from my home fighting for survival. I'd probably punch in the nose, a journalist with good feelings that would come tell me that I'm a racist. I am more african then he will ever be.

@dorian1880 Look, you must be extremely naive or something. The blacks in Southern Africa suffered twenty times more at the hands of the whites than the other way round, while the international community quite rightly boycotted South Africa. I have every respect for the suffering of white Africans as individuals, but don't come and spin it like they are the victims of the situation.

I agree, DiCaprio is a very good actor. And I'm not a teenage girl in heat, but a demanding movie-goer guy.
This is one of my favorite scene of the film (which is quite good overall, for a hollywood movie).

this movie had me really looking at diamonds differently now. this scene is one of my fav. scenes in the movie. Leo did a very good job in it.. you can tell his pain that he kept inside

i believe one would call him zimbabwean, in this context he is rhodesian. the accent however is constructed in the way people might expect a white rhodesian to sound like. i disagree with this version, there is no one rhodesian accent as with the South African accent. district 9 gives a better view of the rsa accent.
in my mind his accent is not right

@SherbetLollipop the accent from d9 is specifically from Gauteng and around the east rand part of Johannesburg( someone who isnt a native eng speaker). to me he sounds a bit like someone from Natal.but I think most whites from SOUTHERN afRICAN COUNTRIES.- have a similiar english accent only the slang terms vary

DiCaprio says "ha" at the end of a sentence about 3 times per minute =) not only in this movie :) Anyone who noticed that??
