Why is Only By the Night mainstream? It isn't! The bassline is extremely beautiful, the only bass I hear in the most mainstream things is BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM. I know these kind of mainstream fans and next year they'll like some teenstar again. In Holland it was Tokio Hotel, the Jonas Brothers, Lady Gaga, now everybody loves Justin Bieber but they'll forget them again. And everybody will forget about KOL.
That's what I said, mainstream will find its way back again, I see it at my school all the time. Kings of Leon is already very '2009' there, the only ones who bought an album of them bought 'Only by the Night' because those are the only songs they know.
I guess that I'm one of the only Dutch people who looked for older KOL to get a better opinion about them.

Kings of Leon were AMAZING when they came out with their first album, and they have remained the same AMAZING band ever since! If they stayed the way they sounded back then, they fer sure would have lost a lot of fans because every album would have sounded the same. They've changed their sound a little, but only to keep up with the progression of music!
No offense, but the whole "progression of music" defense doesn't fly. A band doesn't have to go mainstream in order to progress. Aha Shake Heartbreak is a progression from Youth and Young Manhood, but it doesn't sound watered down in order to appeal to the masses.
Their sound changed with every album, but Only By the Night is the only album that seems watered down.

I have to say, though, I am sick & tired of going to KOL shows to see these 'fans', and I use the term loosely, who only 'rock out' to 'Sex on Fire' & 'Use Somebody'......SERIOUSLY annoying. They have never even heard any bit of the first 3 albums. If you are truly a fan & appreciate their body of work, you know (at least) staples like Taper Jean Girl, Fans, Milk, etc.... I have to say, though, I am sick & tired of going to KOL shows to see these 'fans', and I use the term loosely, who only 'rock out' to 'Sex on Fire' & 'Use Somebody'......SERIOUSLY annoying. They have never even heard any bit of the first 3 albums. If you are truly a fan & appreciate their body of work, you know (at least) staples like Taper Jean Girl, Fans, Milk, etc.... WHY CAN'T RADIO (& 'FANS') EMBRACE THEIR EARLIER WORK????

im kinda split between both ur opinions. iv gotta say the first 3 albums were freaking kickass in comparison to only by the night. but i dont think they sold out. and i really like only by the night. its a stand alone classic album, just doesnt compare to the godlyness of youth and young manhood, aha shake heart break and becasue of the times.

Its got nothing to do with popularity my friend . Im quite partial to hits of today and Im still an avid beatle fan . I just think that replacing witty lyrics with the whoa whoa sing along chorus is a sad departure from the stellar work from the early albums . Still and all its still better than basshunter or do you like him too ?

All their music is good. Of couse they have great songs as well as some not so good songs. You're a Beatles fan so you know how awful twist and shout is compared to something like day in the life. I want you is one of their new songs and that song stands among some of their greatest songs for sure. All of you guys' rants are getting super played out.

. i love the all the albums cos it's the same four awesome brothers makin the music, yeh people are getting annoyed at new fans comin in but any old fans should want kol to be successful as poss cos they diserve it after years of work. i have been a fan since first album. yes i do get a bit annoyed when people hear a song off only by the night and call themself a true fan.dont have to have loved them from begining just little bit more than one song x go team followill!!!
