Irans airforce is made up of around 100 planes, most of which are 50 years old. These are F4/F14 and some Migs. How many can fly with no spares available who knows.

They fired 743 AGM-88 HARMs at radar stations, yet they managed to destroy only the few large SAM sites only, while the SA-3 and SA-6 systems all survived. Also lost one F-117, that was also considered out of reach for the enemy at that time...see some paralell here?
@S300V Serbia...the losses for Nato were low very low. The air defence was knocked out easy, or they did not use as they knew it would be destroyed, Nato had B52's flying non shot down. F-117 is now out of service its 30 years old. But yeah it all moves on. I think when you mention subs and ships getting near, in international waters the rules are no so simple.

@DoctorEnzo B52s can only be used with ALCM if SAMs are present. ALCM is highly expensive, so it can only be used for high value targets. So no they couldnt use B52s non stop, they had to use fighterbombers with heavy ECM support therfore limiting the number of air strikes. They were unable to stop the genocide btw and if it wasnt for our arms delivery to Croatia, they would have been overrun too. (Im from Hungary).

@S300V It was around 400 planes used in Serbia. I dont think the intention was carpet bombing 24/7, but that shown with the minimal loss of aircraft shows. The main effect was they had to fly higer and therefore could nto use the same precssion bombs. But a lot has moved on since Serbia.

What they didnt have is effective long range SAM and fighter cover (Iran has both...altought the fighters are not in numbers). Serbia also didnt have retaliation capacity ( Iran has multiple).
@S300V Yeah but it ask what is the use for AA they shot down next to nothing down only resulted in NATO bombing from height, which was the biggest issues it caused, for the air war. @DoctorEnzo Iranian high altitude SAM is more advanced than that of Serbia, so they will force aircraft to fly low (in the range of MANPADs and flak). It will also hold down US air forces for longer, giving suficient time for offensive missile strikes against ships and bases. The aircraft serve the same purpose (while US planes target practice...).

However with the range of 300KM does it cross your mind a aircraft carrier can operate outside this range?Even the Sunburn SS N 22 has a very limted range (iran dont have this). They fired 743 AGM-88 HARMs at radar stations, yet they managed to destroy only the few large SAM sites only, while the SA-3 and SA-6 systems all survived. Also lost one F-117, that was also considered out of reach for the enemy at that time...see some paralell here?

@S300V Serbia...the losses for Nato were low very low. The air defence was knocked out easy, or they did not use as they knew it would be destroyed, Nato had B52's flying non shot down. F-117 is now out of service its 30 years old. But yeah it all moves on. I think when you mention subs and ships getting near, in international waters the rules are no so simple.

@S300V Well the Serbs ended up keeping the AA off thats why they lost little, but it made it ineffective to a large degree, as simply what did they shoot down? Mainly UAV's the planes were not falling from the sky and the bombing went on. B2 they prob did not want the pride and joy and most expensive bit of kit going down. But not much need for B2 when you can use B52 its cheaper and larger payload,and they have plenty

@DoctorEnzo B52s can only be used with ALCM if SAMs are present. ALCM is highly expensive, so it can only be used for high value targets. So no they couldnt use B52s non stop, they had to use fighterbombers with heavy ECM support therfore limiting the number of air strikes. They were unable to stop the genocide btw and if it wasnt for our arms delivery to Croatia, they would have been overrun too. (Im from Hungary).

@S300V It was around 400 planes used in Serbia. I dont think the intention was carpet bombing 24/7, but that shown with the minimal loss of aircraft shows. The main effect was they had to fly higer and therefore could nto use the same precssion bombs. But a lot has moved on since Serbia.

What they didnt have is effective long range SAM and fighter cover (Iran has both...altought the fighters are not in numbers). Serbia also didnt have retaliation capacity ( Iran has multiple).

@S300V Yeah but it ask what is the use for AA they shot down next to nothing down only resulted in NATO bombing from height, which was the biggest issues it caused, for the air war. The problem for NATO was they could not target the Serbs so easy as they would blend in with the locals. This is not a consideration they will give to much thought in Iran. I cant see Irans fighter making and difference other that target practise. But retaliation is something they do have.

@DoctorEnzo Iranian high altitude SAM is more advanced than that of Serbia, so they will force aircraft to fly low (in the range of MANPADs and flak). It will also hold down US air forces for longer, giving suficient time for offensive missile strikes against ships and bases. The aircraft serve the same purpose (while US planes target practice...).

It only takes a miljíon Rial cruise missile to sink a trilion Dollar carrier and Iran has thousands of them .
Closing the Hormuz nothing will leave or enter the Persian Gulf and Nato war ships are like sitting ducks and they know it .
