I am not an expert so I have two questions. 1. I want to look up annual climate averages. Where wass he located again? 2. How did he put a drainage hole in the refridges?
One persons trash is another persons treasure; as the saying goes. What a good common sense type guy. I tend to keep things and the minute I discard it; I think what it would have been useful for. Sometimes it is a matter of how much storage space you have too. Great ideas. Great vid.Cheers
@tarnsand jobs drain your soul force so you are trying to buy back the soul force embodied in product. soul force is rather fluid and travels from person to person .
This is so awesome! Thank you for sharing. A friend of mine owns a house very close to a creek and there has been a lot of erosion through the years. She used old refrigerators the same way, but has filled them with soil and rock and has reinforced the soil next to the creek. It has held very well for years.
@borger4902 I've wondered about that too. Ever had water from a plastic bottle that's been out in the sun? Plastic probably leaches more in hot climates, due to hotter temperatures and longer sun exposure. I wonder what the curve is on leaching. Does it leach steadily or do most of the chemicals come out relatively quickly? How do revolving temperature extremes affect leaching? Is there a way to "pre-leach" plastic to make it safer?
1) Won't the fridges rust in a couple of years with that water in them? If so, what then. It seems this would create a big mess.
2) Why not just do the same thing in the soil, put rocks below the soil, organic matter on the rocks, soil on top, or would the water go too deep below the rocks? But still, this should work well, yes?
3) Doesn't the soil soon get down in the rocks? What happens then?
hell yeah, a great idea for recyclers and gardeners. This solution maintains levels of water and compost, and controls wildlife. Thanks for the idea frank!
thats awesome! now wheels are turning in my head for my garden lol. its very nice of frank to explain so much for us in english seeing that it took alot of effort. cool.
Love this idea, love the idea of decorating the fridge with mosaic or painting. The added bonus being the the height of the garden wuld be just right for someone who uses a wheelchair to tend the garden. Also depending on climatic conditions the fridges could be arranged in a semi circle creating a microclimate for ground plantings. They are up out of the way of rabbits, and scrub turkeys (which we have here).
Harmful gases are removed from fridges at the local tip/dump here.
What a fantastic idea! Thank you for sharing this. Also, if you don't like the white in the garden, you could paint them your favorite color! Or get really crazy and paint murals on them. Maybe bright sunflowers, or scenes of blue sky with white clouds. You could glue mosaic tiles on them. Or how about a cute picket fence attached to it, then paint some little birdhouses on it.
I hope no 1 just drills holes in fridges or freezers beacause they are full of cloro floro carbons & they cause global warming, please get them from ur local tip after the cloro floro carbons have been removed safely!!!!!
CFL's are in the coolant, not the fridge itself. Remove the motor and the coolant system, which he obviously has already and you are left with a shell that maintains a constant temp for the soil.. or near constant. CFL's are not an issue here at all.
What an ingenious idea! You give hope to people who live in problematic gardening area to use creativity to still provide food for themselves. Keep up the good work and do a video naming all the things you have planted in your fridges.
I now have 6 dead fridges that I am planting collards, okra, broccoli and lettuce in. So far the plants are FAR exceeding my expectations. I will be collecting more since this is so easy. THANKS A MLLION for the idea.
water is now problem when living on a hillside with many trees.
I live in israel and i remmber that in one trip of myn to some hills i saw how ancient people built teraces to capture the water that rains on the hills and how they built a sort of lake or pit where the water can be stored, and because of the trees it didnt evaporate so fast
Ingenious thx.

Wouldn't the chemicals in the plastics leach into the soil and plants? Especially in heat?

Don't worry about the cfl. I do this all the time. Global warming is a myth anyhow. But thanks for being concerned about the enviroment.

Also, here in the States, copper is very expensive - so if you get a fridge or freezer with copper, you can sell it - maybe for $50 or so!

I've been straining my brain for a cheap way to build raised beds - here they are - free, via recycling. Great. Thanks!

Hmm, never thought of using fridges. I've always used old bath tubs.

The fridge is insulated so with clear plastic on top, this principle would work in cold areas too.
