  • im sacred coz i know i will forget to steer back to staight and keep going mg im so confused

  • I share your pain folks. 40 years old. Started driving lessons in Canada, where hand over hand ruled. Now learning in the UK. AAARRGGHH!

  • hand over hand feels better

  • Dude how do i keep ending up on the weird part of youtube...

A tutorial how to steer with you steeringwheel?

  • My instructor told me to drive this way... Omg, I can not stand it. >_< He gets mad when I don't drive this way! Hand over hand is so much more natural.

  • This is soo confusing!

  • i think it will be hard because it's knowing how much to turn the wheel at a corner

  • Or you could just let go of the wheel to have it spin back :p Doesn't seem to affect control in my car, and it keeps going straight. The method shown here is one of the right ways, but its too slow to be honest for standard every day driving when making fast turnings.

  • i got taught differently, but its similar.

  • This is how my instructor want me to drive she said it is more easy than hand over hand and that is the best way to drive

  • @jovigirlbonjovi100 Same here. I hate doing this wheel shuffle though, I like to give it a bit of the old 'gangsta' role. lol

  • i know this is for uk but i live in las vegas nevada do you have to steer like this as a preference for the drivers test or can you do the one handed method where you just slide it with your hand because that method makes me much more comfortable and makes m turns smoother but i dont know if itll dock me points

  • @spiceytaco95 for the test in the uk you have to do the push pull method but as soon as you pass it is personal preference if you want to continue this or adopt a new method for yourself. BUT YOU MUST DO THIS FOR THE TEST OF YOU WILL FAIL in the uk that is :)

  • wtf he isnt moving jsut turning around :O

  • These 'experts' that tell you "it's too slow", "clunky" and that can't drive smoothly using pull push have two things in common. One, they are wrong, and two, they can't do it properly themselves, so they assume nobody else can. Don't shuffle the wheel like most learner drivers, turn it smoothly. It takes practice to do properly, but it works well and it's smooth.. You don't use pull push when travelling at high speed, because you hardly have to move the steering wheel to turn a car at speed.

  • Lol, my dad tells me this is bad to do cause its too slow, AND IT IS. im a slow person myself so i have horrible reaction times, when i turn i sometimes turn to much and then i start swerving to straighten the car LOL

  • This is such a pointless technique, there is absolutely nothing dangerous about crossing your hands. In fact, if you need to turn the steering wheel quickly and you're sitting there shuffling he wheel, I'm pretty sure you'd end up hitting something, it's a bad habbit to get in to.

  • @mattcorden95 Nothing dangerous about crossing your hands until you hit something and the airbag goes off and throws your crossed arms into your face at nigh on two hundered miles an hour. Thats how fast an airbag deploys. Anything directly in front of it gets pushed toward your oncoming head. And seriously how often, driving on a public road, do you need to turn the wheel so far and so quickly that Pull Push isn't fast enough? One arm pulls the wheel 180 degrees, the other pushes up 180 deg.

  • @gromit37 Nope, your arms are crossed over the top of the wheel, the centre of the steering wheel is below them and therefore the airbag won't be moving your arms anywhere near your face. And pull push isn't fast enough for city driving, especially since you have to negotiate tight turns, it's just an unnecessary inconvienience that actually makes no difference to safety what so ever.

  • @mattcorden95 good job

  • @mattcorden95 Factually inaccurate, as only your *hands* cross above that part of the wheel. Unless of course you drive with your arms raised above the level of your own ears. I'd like to see that one. :-) As for PP not being fast enough for city driving, well, after nearly 22 years of driving, I'll have to disagree. Maybe it's just your technique that needs some work. In my Caterham 7 I hardly use PP, but it's got less that 2 turns lock to lock. When I need full lock, PP works perfectly.

  • @mattcorden95 The guys at Saabs driving academy bring up a good point.

"Keep your hands at 9 and 3 and shuffle the wheel between them, Never hook the inside of the wheel, if your arm is accross the wheel and the airbag goes off, it will be your freshly broken arm that breaks your nose." Fist your own nose into a pulp AND break your arm, nice one :)

PS as your arms make the wheel rotate your forearm crosses over the wheel entirely from the left side of the body to the right - worth the risk?

  • @DrivingMagicOnline If we're going to try to eliminate every possible danger in a car when we have a crash we might as well not get in the car in the first place. I think we should be concentrating more on avoiding fatal crashes rather than the one in a million chance that the airbag could go off whilst going round a corner fast enough for it to go off in the first place. Like with all you poeple at the instutute of advanced motorists, it isn't necessary

  • this is wrong!

  • this is wrong!

  • What kind of dumb-ass country drives on the LEFT side of the road?!

  • @MultiDave66 that's fun, but basically those whose language you are speaking :)

  • It's the worst technique, how u gonna smoke, or dial a number, damn idiot

  • Its more dangerous to use this technique than the crossover technique. DSA is a farce.

  • @bfcricky What do you mean? I don't steer this way, it doesn't feel safe at all.

  • This is such a clunky way to drive, its impossible to drive smoothly using push pull so probably you will do what everyone does and disregard this useless technique the second you pass your test. Push pull at speed is even worse, it feels like the driver is using a D pad to steer the car.

  • THATS GAY!

  • i use just one hand, eazy!! heres how to do it, when doing a full turn etc, use your palm open hand and move around like that, simple but only do it when you going slow not on open road/high way ;) (its like havein one of those steering knobs you screw onto the steering wheel) but free!

  • oooo come on !!! this is the slowest possible way to steer ! just few granny use this technique the real driver don't . If you learn someone to steer that way you learn it how to miss the bends and how to make traffic jam

  • i dnt get how to steer to left and right. i know i sound dumb but when it actually comes to doin it, it aint that easy! esp wen ur reversing and trying to park in a lane. and the person helping you with driving lessons is ur brother...:-/

  • I can't do it either, I had my first lesson today! Its going to take a bit of practice!!

  • @KathrynW93 at first it feels weird, but u'll get used to it with practice. i had my first lesson today so it was a little hard but i got it. i just need to practice and i'll get it hopefully.

  • wow this looks complicated...

  • @todan2008 I know

  • actually its nice to practice on a stand fan (electric fan), just remove the outer shale and practice its blade, it acts as a steering wheel, atleast it helped a lot for me!

  • Do you HAVE to use this technique

  • @agent648 well basically to find out if ur doin it right is if the car is turning where you want it to turn. its all about control. if you want to go left but you're hardly moving (if u dnt have power steering) then you need to do some wider steering- slide your hands all over - 360 degree turn :p then straighten the wheel. if your wheels are at least straight / ur heading in the right direction then ur doin it! also it helps not to think about your steering technique whilst steering! :-s

  • @agent648 cos its a distraction

  • @agent648 also u have to steer REALLY SLOWLY if ur unsure. and it gives u a wider space to turn obviously. if ur steering whilst ur foot is on the accelerator- wrong idea. use half clutch

  • Ahhh hold the steering wheel. Thats where I've been going wrong all these years.

  • idiot... just take the wheel and steer! anyone who cant do taht naturally and needs a lesson in steering shouldnt be allowed to drive!!!

  • @aalderni About 10% of new drivers will struggle with steering in the early hours, learning this technique gives better them control, otherwise you see them turn a corner getting their arms twisted and unable to turn the steering any more. Hand over hand is a natural progression as experience grows. We all have to start somewhere...

  • Turn Left : PULL with the left , right hand slide to meet - PUSH with the right , left hand slide to meet

Turn Right : PULL with the right , left hand slide to meet - PUSH with the left , right hand slide to meet

Firm grip when you PULL and also when you PUSH

    EASY....

  • this is how i steer... but i dont do the same thing to straighten the wheel... i just let it slide in my palms until its straight.

  • this is impossible... i use 1 hand or hand over hand

  • I steer with one hand only so I can jerk off my tiny limp dick with my other hand! This is how we patriotic, CONservative, RepubliCON Americans drive! You damn Brits are wrong and thats why we beat you to earn our freedom! We also drive huge Hummers because huge trucks and SUVs make up for small dicks!

  • @mbond65 acutally THIS IS BEST , because if your driving a RWD car its really hard to countersteer it when oversteer occures if your hand on wheel position is wrong

  • @RenaultSport133 Forgot I posted this. thanks for the reminder. Also, concerning the steering , aslong as you have power steering. should be fine. You never see anyone driving like this guy, except learners or newbs ;)

  • @mbond65 learners , newbs , racing car drivers , anyone with half a brain... you should get more "behind a wheel time" , try correcting oversteer in a mid corner while crossing your hands on the steering wheel , with or without powersteering you are screwed , "whatever you feel is best" can apply only to those who drive their car strictly to the shops and back , without exceeding 60kmh...

  • @RenaultSport133 Ok . You keep driving like that and I will keep driving as I do. Now will you politely fuck off . many thanks

  • @mbond65 sure thing , take care

  • This has got to be the most dangerous and ugly way to steer your car.

  • @MrMattinator1 This is the safest way to steer, there are many advantages to this method. One of them being that if the airbag goes off, your arm won't be in the way.

  • @MrMattinator1 i have to agree.....I just use my right hand and spin the wheel fast in the same place and its much easier.

  • What the fuck is this shit... haha.... !!

  • hahahah so friggin hard loool my isntructor says i just keep slidng both hands down the wheel and it skinda funny actually practsisin with a dinner plate lool

  • how do i subscribe!

    cool video

    hopefully i'll pass!

  • "Now, let's try this technique at 140kph, in a gravel race track..."

  • @spythers WTF?

  • @04smallmjLol! Stupid joke, I know... They should teach us some rally techniques at the driving school...

  • i have no idea why i find this so hard lol

  • My god, this video is by far more superior than my current driving instructor.

Very clear and concise explanation rather than having someone yelling at me.

  • Thank you for this, I'm useless at steering so far but will keep trying :)

  • Comment removed

  • @Somethingcrappy sure you did.

  • Comment removed

  • @Somethingcrappy so you still have a LOT to learn then

  • @Somethingcrappy

Grand theft auto doesn't count, junior.

  • Comment removed

  • @Somethingcrappy

I think you're confusing 'making a car go' with 'driving'.

When you're old enough to have your first lesson perhaps you can post a video of you negotiating a busy roundabout or joining a dual carriageway in rush hour traffic.

I'm one of those grandpas who teaches young whelps, with lots of attitude and no sense, how to survive until their first tankful of gas runs out.

  • @Somethingcrappy thats nt true. u cnt learn everything about drivin in 25 mins. av u seen a theory test book or highway code?? its nt 25 pages long...i think if u rylli wna learn to drive spend a few hours on those books and do some questions then pass ur theory, hit the road and do at least 35-40 lessons with an instructor then when u get the hang of everything i.e. driving in all weathers, on a motorway, and dual carriageway, reversing, then u cn confidently say- i kno how to drive!!!

  • @sweetappletits But obviously not how to spell

  • @Anderange HEYYYYYYY!!!!!! i was typing fast thats all

  • omg, that's sick

  • Not easy!!!

  • hahaha that's the police shuffle

  • no matter how much i try to do this i always end up doing the rotational steering

  • ahhh i really can't do it my driving instructor give me a tin lid to practice with but nope im just not gettin it!

  • Doing this in Road Ready in Nebraska, you just let it slide through your hands. By what my driving instructor said.

  • will you fail if you don't use this technique lol i have never used it any of my lesson it makes it harder to drive for me.lol

  • driving is so hard ive done 18 hrs and im still struggling

  • @paulxtreme How far have you got in 18hrs?

  • @jerryb2001 ive got hang of it now but i cant parallel park and i need to be more alert

  • what a lovely reassuring voice and delivery the narrator has.

  • NOOB it's better to keep your hands on the top half of the wheel at all times for better control.

  • I don't know why people find this hard, it's a basic motor skill. It's amazing the number of people who do this to pass the test then immediately start doing it by pulling the inside rim of the steering wheel. I've been driving for eight months now and I still almost always use the proper technique.

  • @tomski3 I don't know anyone who continued to use this technique after passing, except for myself...

  • After I learned this (on my 2nd/3rd lesson) I actually find it difficult to use the hand over hand technique!

  • i cant do this!!! im sure its easy buuut, i tend to steer ''my own'' way which totally incorrect and this technique well, it looks hard. not being able to steer properly is holding me back!

question: the person on this video is actually holding the top part of the wheel, which is not really ''ten to two''...is that how it's properly done??

  • @l4dima I was the same lol, the instructor just constantly moaned at me, then somehow I just managed to do it without thinking about it ! =D

  • OMG this is sooo hard! I still can't do it.

Every time i try to do it I flip the car!

    HELP!

  • @bossyman15 u too?

  • @bossyman15 how do u flip the car??? i find that i do the correct technique when when i dont think about it. and am stil a basic beginner lool

  • Shouldn't this be second nature?

  • I cant do it either!! I dont know why. I dont understand that im driving one handed??

  • last time i watched your videos was before I even started my lessons and didn't understand anything you were saying, now everything Is making more sense.

  • lol whatever. A racing driver doesn't need to take their hands off the wheel. They will cross their arms if necessary. This isn't needed in normal day to day driving especially when turns are more than 180 degrees.

Go back to your wheel shuffling.

  • "Doesn't need to" is not the same as "should not."

On a race track, you mostly use your arms to steer with hands on 9 and 3 o'clock position.

  • 1 racing cars have a different steering ratio lock to lock might be only 1/2 a revelation, road car might be as much as 4 revelation

2 pull push steering is a preferred method of steering on a UK driving test

  • He is drifting not racing.

  • @dd8721 this is not drifiting learn

  • thats way too time consuming if you steer like that. you can steer it in a faster way... xD peace out!

  • Comment removed

  • Why do they still teach this method? Its way too slow and is a crap way to steer.

  • @dd8721

nowhere else any more but in Ireland...

  • @dd8721 Its actually not, at all. In many ways it is faster (as far as changing from going left to right as you would do in accident avoidance) additionally, it keeps your hands away from the air bag. Bad things happen when you punch yourself.

  • thats a bs way to steer..

  • Nice attempt to show Pull-Push technique, but I'd comment on your 'return' moves, you start the pull well past the 12 O'clock postion, which is generally a big no-no! Hand should never move past the 12 position, as that can impair safety; 1) If the airbags go off, you will break your arms, and probably face. 2) It leads to the tendency to use Rotational Steering. Otherwise, an excellent introduction :)

  • omg I can't do it!!! ¬_¬

  • @faye2708

    I've got a pupil who can't either!

    (Getting better after 4 hours.)

have you tried with a dinner plate or a frisbee?

It's better to spend a couple of hours practising for free with a dinner plate than sitting in your instructors car for forty - odd quid.

  • @loki1066 am doin it now with a dinner plate!! haha XD id thought a dinner plate wud be good to use as well :-)

  • @faye2708 Practice makes perfect, good luck.

  • You should steer like this or learn to as it is safer, because if you cross your arms, the impact of an airbag out of the steering wheel hitting your arms has the potential to do serious damage to your face, eg, if you're wearing a watch then it could smash into your face.

  • There is no need to use Pull Push steering. DSA say: To ensure uniformity, when conducting car or vocational tests and ADI qualifying examinations, only assess the candidate's ability to control the vehicle and do not consider it as a fault if, for example, they do not hold the steering wheel at ten to two or quarter to three or if they cross their hands when turning the steering wheel. The assessment should be based on whether the steering is smooth, safe and under control.

  • had my first lesson today! no matter how many tries at this..still couldnt get the hang of it!! i will eventually... :) my instructor told me about the plate too! think i deffinatly need to have a practise

  • Stick with the push-pull you will get the hang of it. it is the safest and most controlled method of road steering there is.

I will upload a video soon to show people how push-pull can be used for high speed advanced driving and just how effective it is to everyone.

  • Yes, the UK does have power steering,

  • @spartanosia5 Dumbass

  • do that in the practical test in israel and you fail right on the spot.

what if when you are at the lowest section of the wheel ( 0:19 ) a kid runs in front of the car ? you have no control on the car

  • You do in fact have a good bit of control, at least compared to the overhand method. Why do you thing police agencies all over the world use this method (at least the better trained ones)

  • @blazerx920 What if you use the other method and you have both hands on the bottom right section of the wheel?

  • this is the style of driving british police use,so if you are speeding and wonder who's that guy on my tail im doing 124mph it more than certain to be an advanced police driver wanting to show you a video

  • don't mind this . Not everyone can get the hang of this , steer the way its convenient for u .

  • It's not as hard as it looks? Pfft!

  • Daft thing to do bt it helps. My driving instructor told me to get a plate and shuffle it through your hands. Its a very good technequie, but ay feel abit of twat with a plate in ya hand.Trust me it works

  • Thats what my intructor told me to do :P But with a chopping board, I didn't think of a plate! I'm just about to do it now, thats my homework :P HAHA. You obviously couldn't get the hang of it either? :(

  • hand over hand steering is easier, and less complicated because you can do three movements with hand over hand, and like eight with panning or push pull!

  • hand over hand may be easier..if your in uk and taken driving lessons, why not learn ur instructor hand over hand..let us all know the outcome..

  • very well explained, i just wouldn't move my hands at the top to start steering, but otherwise very well done.

  • Can I I use pull puss method when taking road test in USA?

  • dion- all ya av to do in the USA's driving test it switch the cunt on & yav passed.

  • lol

  • you lose control if your hands are ever at the top of bottom of the wheel. its the least friction and moveability up and down there dipshit

  • its harder to come out of a turn this way, it causes frustrating lane stability

  • thank u

  • If you ever need to accelerate hard out of a tight turn (Uturn for example)you will cross the centreline and hit a vehicle coming,if you don't let the wheel slip. It's a fact. Learn this skill before you kill yourself and other innocent road users.

  • @wert6yuio I suppose an instructor would tell you that if you need to accelerate hard at all then you haven't left enough room between you and the car approaching you from behind. I know what you mean though, I've been guilty of doing it before.

  • Yeah im currently learning this way now..its the best way to steer you keep control of the situation..and at the same time your using less hand movement..more effective in tight spaces at a quicker speed..after this you wont go back to anything else.

  • I've had two lessons so far. I've covered quite alot of things already and i just about got the hang of push-pull. Practice on a dinner plate. Its retarded but it works haha :)

  • My instructor told me to do that. I have also had 2 lessons so far!

  • How the heck do people think about types of steering while reading road signs, judging the road ahead, listening to the engine to change gear and looking in mirrors and such. ALL at the same time?

I'm a drummer so I can multi task but that just sounds bonkers :P

  • As with drumming, it comes naturally after a while ;)

  • easy after awhile it becomes natural, second nature even.

  • If you do that in your test you will fail. I was allowed to do it the other way in my LESSONS ONLY, the instructor said that it was okay, as long as I do it the proper way in my final test. My instructor was very laid back though, not sure about most instructors, so ask first.

  • fuck that ill just do it the other way

  • same here but whilst im learning i gotta do it the shit way

  • same here. such a pain

  • This is very good demo thanks so much

  • Is it ok to let the steering wheel slip through your fingers when navigating a sharp corner returning to a straight position?

  • You have potentially less control over your car while letting the steering wheel slip through your fingers as opposed to actually doing it yourself.

  • Ok then... millions of people everyday let the steering wheel "slide" back through their hands when coming out a corner. They even teach it in America with learners.

  • Also:

When I was doing track lessons I was told to keep my hands at the one place when steering. My race instructor actually said, and I quote "We don't want any of this DSA wheel shuffling crap, no no - it's no good at all."

When I used the "push & pull method" I felt I never had any control of the car at all. Thankfully these days, for the better, I prefer keeping my hands at the one place when steering. I feel I have much more control over the car.

  • you only need to push pull when your turning at a bigger angle e.g junctions.. otherwise you just turn.

  • i was very crappy at turns and almost overturning evertime until my gradnfather noticed and showed me how to let the steering wheel slide through your hands when coming out of the turn. It help so much.

  • You're wrong! Try and steer figure 8s faster than walking pace without letting the wheel slip back to centre. Even advanced trainers can't do it.
