Nice to see you all enjoyed the Autumn gala out there despite the overgrowth that many linesiders had to face. Im quite amazed at how much vegetation has grown over the last few years incase you might of noticed in many areas. Just hoping they cut it back soon
It does seem a paricular problem at the SVR, don't know whether its down to a shortage of volunteers to tackle the weeds. It does spoil the overall look of the line though compared to many of the preserved lines
Absolutely splendid Austin. I think you're getting even better if that's possible! Fell for 828 at Aviemore years ago so seeing her in action on the SVR is great. Cheers, Ed
Thanks Ed, it was a real treat to see 828 in that immaculate livery. I hope she visits another railway south of the border before too long. Judging by the comments received, she has many new admirers
I was there. A truly spectacular gala. I must say that this is the best youtube footage that I have ever seen of any railway event. I would pay to watch this . WELL DONE INDEED.
Congratulations on another Master Video Austin. You certainly chose some of the best locations for filming. Great line up of locos, and like you the Caley 0-6-0stood out in both looks and performance. I must say Austin, I find that the SVR like many railways have lost that extra sparkle they always gave during their Galas. Most trains just running with minimum effort, which doesn't get the hairs on the back of the neck standing up.....Bob
@acw71000 A friend of mine is an SVR driver. He told me the reasons they don't drive like they used to are:
1. Condition of track in several places no longer allows brisk running;
2. The price of coal has risen by over 160% in the last two or three years, so economy is encouraged, and lastly;
3. So much video footage is made public through such media as this that they are liable to get both themselves and the railway into trouble if the wrong people see it, which is so easy these days!
Thanks for taking the trouble to reply and explain this. We tend to forget such things as the coal cost etc. but it obviously makes sense to drive and fire as economically as possible and yes, with so much video available of events, one could easily get into trouble. I do hope your friend didn't take offence at our remarks as none was intended, they were merely observations and its great to have everything explained
@acw71000 No, my friend was always game for a "browsle" as we call it, particularly on a gala weekend which is staged entirely for people such as you. But it is only fair that we explain to you the reasons we can't do it any more, and just hope we can put on a good enough show to keep you coming to our railway.
@acw71000 Perhaps you're right Austin, and higher costs may also be a factor, but this doesn't seem to deter other Railways from putting on a show if only on Gala Days....after all the costs of tickets are higher for such events....Bob
Great video Austin. Quite a coup for the rly to get 828 too I bet. Nice to see her Caledonian Blue amongst the greens and blacks of the others. Seems Tornado has a squeak just like the King.!! Thank you Austin, very enjoyable........Tim.
i went on the saturday :) it was sooo busy!! brillaint day though great railway and wonderfull locomotives! weather was good aswell :) thank you uploading a great video.
Hi This is excellent. I couldn't be there as I wasnt well, so this was a real pick me up. By the way what equipment did you use and how did you avoid the usual noise from the wind on your audio, if it's not a trade secret. regards Robert
Thanks very much Robert, the camera used was a Panasonic SD700. I use an external Sennheiser microphone with a windjam on it. If you can't plug in an external mic. you can cover the mic with some foam to deaden the wind noise a bit
A great show and some interesting vantage points and whilst Tornado is a great crowd puller, star of the show for me was the Caledonian. I was there over the two days so shall be posting later. Thanks for sharing. Regards, John
I agree John, it seems from the comments here that perhaps 828 was the star for enthusiasts whilst for the general public 'Tornado' was the big draw. I look forward to seeing your video later
Thanks Steve, I'd love to see 828 visit some other lines down here, she would lovely at the Lakeside and Haverthwaite I think. You can hear the crackles in the first shot of the 9F which had to be heavily cut until the loco noise took over and 60163 at Arley. I'm sure it's mobile phone interference
Excellent footage as usual Austin. 828 looked superb, it certainley drew in the crowds and your shots show it off wonderfully. I could not make this Gala, next one is the WSR, might bump into you again??
Thank you Nick. From all the comments so far, 828 was the real star. Can't make the Autumn Gala at the WSR unfortunately but I'll be there next Spring.
@acw71000 I look forward to seeing you austin at the GCR on the Saturday and also im at the NYMR on Saturday and Sunday and there a photo charter on the NYMR on Friday if you are intrested? Andrew
Truly excellent, I enjoyed every minute of this, thank you.
