if you were smoother on the gas you wouldn't be sliding around at every corner exit plus u need smoother steering input but admittedly doesn't seem like the car was fully set up and seems like you weren't used to it
so Mr. Armchair racing driver...what part of "VIR Patriot Lap Record" did you not understand?...these cars are twitchy at the limit, and in car video usually shows a lot more happening that what is really going on.
@JosephCote27 Your arms are too straight. You're not getting the delicacies of the steering feedback. You are retro-active and not pro-active with regard to balance and positioning. The track and the car in front are driving you - makes it real hard work and tiring to watch. This advice is to help you realise the potential and isn't just blind critique.
@sklyrovka What kind of problems (drama) have you had with the ITB setup? Im planning on building a street Miata and I was thinking about an individual throttle body setup for it.
We won oveall in the Street Class which means 140 UTQG Tires and a cat. Street tire was run on the Patriot Course. The cars you mentioned were in the Unlimited class. Tarzan Yamada who I know personally ran a 54 sec. time a year earlier in a built EVO. For those that do not know he has the 2nd fastest time in the Superlap Battle behind the HKS all carbon EVO. Our 52.9 was pretty impressive especially for a Miata.
Thanks. The driver did a great job. 2 weeks ago we hit 184 WHP & Redline is set at 9000 RPM's. All we did was take the 38mm chokes out & went straight 45mm Throttle Bodies & gained 13 WHP. After the next 2 events we will bolt in our most agressive FujiRacing cams and hope to hit 200 WHP NATURALLY ASPIRATED on PUMP GAS. We using only 11:1 CR & no other Miata Tuner/Builder has even comes close due to our ITB's/Cams,Builder & Tuner.
I love you guys....1.8 litres naturally aspirated power being brought to bear like that is so refreshing to see.
Excllent car control as well - car looked great under power but whoah momma when off the throttle! Quite a feat flinging it so fearlessly into corners like that and ultimately tracing such great lines!
The seat is moved way up.The Neon in this video is a runner up at the Super Lap Battle(Time Attack) and on this track I highly doubt any other Miata can beat it on street tires. Our time was faster than EVO's,STI's,S2000, M3. Drivers that have been on this track Eiji Yamada who is one of the best Time Attackers in the world & Steve R. 1 lap of America winner 2009. We beat their times. Find the best drivers and a Miata and enter a REDLINE Time Attack and see how they do.Our driver did very well.
you did good job keeping the car controlled, while being allover the place.
You're blaming your swaybar for the twitchness?
The video suggests you may be sitting too far back, as a result your steering response is much slower then your potential. Your steering is lighting fast however your steering is barely keeping up with the hi- responsiveness of the car. You're great driver by all means, you could do much better. :) "mx5s don't lose to neons EVER!" Its the driver that does.
Whats remarkable is its only the 4th time for the driver on a circuit and first time with the Miata with this setup. The Neon has been setting lap records and is dialed in. We will be using new sway bars this year and we will be working on handling. We set a Redline Time Attack Track record with a 52.9 sec. lap & those that know the car thinks a 49 sec. lap is there.
The Neon handles much better than your admirably quick Miata. I would work on the handling so you aren't sawing the wheel so much. This would make this car even quicker.
There is definitely more "sawing the wheel" than I would normally like. I really should have put the stock rear swaybar in, but we didn't get around to it. It was my first Time Attack and we were very busy.
If the Neon is a better handling car, why was I reeling him in everytime we hit a corner?
Intake on this video was choked down to 38mm x 4 using long 80mm Air Horns. Now we opened up & tested yesterday with straight 45mm x 4 TB's & 35mm Air Horns. There is more midrange & topend power & car pulls stronger all the way to 8500 RPM's. Now we will set the RPM's to 9K. We will stay with the piston motor for now.
i talked to the owner of this car and he said they are gonna put a rotory in it for next year. its amazing that a 170 hp car was waxin that ass on all those cars. very impressive!
I have a 1.8L miata with 10.5:1 wiesco pistons. Would it be safe for me to put a turbo on my motor useing 10psi of boost? If so, what should I set my timing at?
Driver of the car here. I just want to thank Fuji Racing for giving me the opportunity to drive the car! They have built an incredible Miata. Just for reference, the car I was following was a One Lap of America class winning 400 whp SRT4. It amazed me that he was not pulling away on the straight very quickly (especially going uphill).
We were on 205/50/15 tires (140 UTQG). Build is only @ 80% 11.1CR. Next build 14.1 CR "When there are tight turns involved there is no Miata that will touch a ITB Miata". Waiting on our 225/45/15's in the 140 UTQG tread.
No Miata will touch us on a short track or Touge and what is amazing is we could compete with any Forced Induction on a big track but they wouldn't have a chance on a short tight track. IMHO Turbo or SC Miata
probably just needed stickier tires. I'm looking at a set of Jenvey IRTB's for my Miata with 90mm.

Oversteer city! Very intense. Drives like an old 911 haha.
Congrats on the win and love the sound of those ITB's!

The 38mm is sized for more low midrange and less topend. On this track we could've gone mstraight 45mm since there were no 2nd gear turns.

Question: what is the purpose of the 38 mm chokes on a 45mm throttle boddy?

Wait this car won overall at the event? Did the TopSpeed Impreza, Takata STi, AMS Evo, or any unlimited class cars show?

This video reminds me of the great ''U2'' battles of the 70's TransAM series.
Small cars chasing big cars going balls to the wall.
Great job guys, keep up the good work.

rotarymiata 3 years ago
in my opinion thats too much compression for 10 psi. if you go with 10 psi throw in a much thicker head gasket.
Tkurtz88 3 years ago
my 2001 has a 10.1 cr and handled 6lbs no problem. higher compression=more heat, consider that.
downset 2 years ago
Timing is set at stock & we didn't even touch the cam gears. The car runs so good leave it alone.
In a straight line carbs will perform well but in turns you will experience fuel starvation and constantly tune it. ITB's you leave it alone.
4ThrottleTuning 3 years ago
what kind of mpg u get from NORMAL driving?

what do you have your timing set at? do you think sidedraft carb would do a good enough job on an all motor build?
