There will never be another Amneris for me! Simionato owns this role and colours her voice fantastically. Her penultimate 'Anatema su voi!' is amazing; almost snarled. This is a fantastic example of an artist using every part of her body to 'act' a role. Truly amazing. Although she sang this role for a large part of her career, I think that the performances from the mid 50s onwards are the best. La scala '56 and '60 being personal favourites.
The Great Simionato, ladies and gentlemen. Yes, cossotto was a very good singer but Simionato was an IMMENSE artist in terms of versatility, repertory, longevity, musicianship, technique, stage acting, and overall vocal artistry. Consider her Neris, Adalgisa, Jane Seymour, Carmen, Rosina and Cenerentola when younger, Ulrica, Favorite, Arsace, Eboli!! She and Marilyn Horne were the two greatest mezzo-sopranos of the 20th century. Will anyone care to argue this, please?
I love Cossotto in this role, but Simionato really owns it. She can phrase with such meaning and feeling behind the words and music. Thank God for NHK preserving this and other great operas during the La Scala tours to Japan.
That is the best Judgement scene I have seen - live or on video, and she is magnificent. More interaction with Ramphis then we usually see too - I like the way Ramphis scornfully looks back down at her at the end of the scene.
Now looking at her acting skills, what a consummate artist. I love her "...sangue aaaahhh secate...". Also, when she turns to the audience working her cape right before "Empia razza!"...the following heavy chest outburst in "anatema sul.." ...the way she falls over, breaks down and then elegantly rises to the ovation, really awesome! BRAVISSIMA!!!
Whenever I reflect on what beauty of tone means to me, this Marvelous Lady's voice immediately comes to mind. Her timbre is so exquisite, and she portrays this role with such an elegant regality. She carries a delicate sensuality in both her voice and her posture that always makes me think of hers being the real woman's voice: strong and soft, heavenly and human, bright and dark-hued, imposing and vulnerable...sighs...
Brava! La Simionato is one of my absolute favorites. I've only fallen in love with the sound of 3 opera singers. Leontyne Price, Kirsten Flagstad, and Simionato. GREAT STUFF! Thanks
Simionato was a great singer but she was NOT a dramatic mezzo, Simionato voice was lyrical rossinian mezzo type, also her voice had many holes in the middle and the voice on top on top was NOT big
Simionato had a seemless register from top to bottom, with no breaks or holes, a truely unique voice from that perspective. Why don't you look in the web for what jon vickers said on her voice - he adored her.
Thank you, urierman, for ur rebuttle to yet another ignorant posting by potrobsas. What can that idiot mean when he says her voice has "many holes" in the middle? What, she has 3 good notes, then a "hole," then 2 more good notes then another "hole"??? LOL.Puh-leez. Dramatic Soprano par excellence.(yeah not Dramatic Mezzo, but surely not bel canto lyric mezzo either). Potrobsas has trouble recognizing this voice type--opinionated idiot. Thanks again for your posting!!
fuuuuuck. just watching this again brings me to tears....sooooo lovely!!

@rjw0886 something mezzos could learn today.....
if you save the chest voice, you have it in spades for the important moments....
see also her duet in cavelleria rusticana, the "BADA! aaaaa TE, la BUONA PASQUA! is equally gut gripping
