  • Beautifully sung.

  • Sounds lyk Heaven...almost surrealistic...

  • nice do-rag

  • my favorite version :)

  • Haunting.

She made this while recovering from breast cancer.

I wish I was that strong.

  • Ancient English song.

  • @ralutjohn didn't know. thought it was by Paul!

  • nice

  • Has anyone actually studied the words. It is not romantic at all! The narrator is setting impossible tasks and saying (s)he will only love the partner if they solve the impossible. This is not a love song! Possibly the opposite.

  • @liuzhou um, you should look up the symbolism of each of those... impossible tasks. and while you're at it you ought to look up what Parsley, Sage, Rosemary, and Thyme each represent. I thought like you until i actually looked that up.

  • @shaloneithne Thank you. I am well aware of the symbolism.

  • @liuzhou oh. then you know that the entire symbolism of the song was to encourage her lover. awesome. I didn't know that until I did that project and looked all the pieces up.

  • @liuzhou er, that's one theory. Another is that the lover is already dead - from the plague - and that it is a farewell song.

  • even so ,wouldnt come close to most popular song ever writen and sung by billions,??? happy birthday to you,,,still great song and voice by carly

  • What happened to her, she's such an amazing musician. How in the world did she fade away? Must have been by her own choice. I wish she would perform on more things these days, we need real musicians to make a comeback! Lose the autotune!

  • what a beautiful person all around. :)

  • A great voice.

    A great soul.

Of course, also being stunningly beautiful never hurts.

  • I love this song. Wonderful and full of emotion

  • I M MEXICAN BUT MY CHILDREN BORN IN SCABOROUGH AND NOW THEY LIVING IN BRIDLINTON NICE PLACE.

  • @merlinfuckyouall Reading that while listening to this song reminds you just how beautiful life is... even though your name is kind of the antithesis of what I just wrote.

  • @merlinfuckyouall

Love it ...its a lovely place. Not as warm as Mexico lol ........

  • It's nice to see a version of this song done by an alto. Gives me hope in life....

  • BEAUTIFUL ENUNCIATION!! CLAP CLAP CLAP!

  • What a diction! So simple to understand and to follow...!

  • Wreszcie ktoś z dykcją zaśpiewał... Świetne

  • Carly Simon has a really good voice and I like some of her other songs but in my opinion her voice does not suit this particular song. I imagine the singer of this song would have a higher, younger sounding voice like in other versions. But as I said, no disrespect to Carly Simon.

  • Cary, that was just awesome, I love your music, I love you!~alan

  • This is maybe better than Simon & Garfunkel's version. Carly, you sound beautiful, you look beautiful, you... are beautiful

  • @corrado1860 better then Simon and Garfunkel's version? Lay off the doobies cause they're impairing your hearing, no way! Maybe if she tried singing harmony with James Taylor when they were younger who knows? Still the S and G version can't be topped.

  • Meh.

  • I love this song, but this version sucks.. Sarah Brightmans version and Gypsy Souls version are both much better

  • Whoa she has aged well still a handsome woman. Also an iconic song which will echo down the ages.

  • this song is so enchanting :) i've listened to several cover of this song, but she's the best :D

  • magnifica!!

  • 31years6monthsand a day TOGETHER again ...always a true love of mine ANTHONY J. VANHORN

  • i love her i wish her happyness

  • Hi, we have always enjoyed Carly Simon - I've not heard her cover of this S&G song - it's fantastic - love it!

    John & Karen (FougereLohnes)

  • @FougereLohnes Not an S&G cover. This song has been sung for decades if not centuries. It has a story behind it that's quite lovely. Look it up. :) It's a fantastic thing to discover.

  • @CleverRuseiSay Hi, wow, yes, thank you. I would not have known... The origins are quite interesting. Thanks again.

  • @FougereLohnes Well, guys I see you have already caught this vid. And I saw your comment to CleverRuseiSay and you are correct, this song is very, very old. S&G actually changed the words drastically to the original. Great story in this song. Still think you guys are in the Woodstockish genre....

  • @sgtdarkness1 Thank yo so much. Yes, we do enjoy folk music and the music of the Woodstock period - the stories and the lyrics combined with a beautiful voice and guitar. Have a fantastic day!

    John & Karen (FougereLohnes)

  • @CleverRuseiSay

"Centuries" is correct - midieval folk song, which the title and theme also suggests ;-)

English folk singer Martin Carthy was the one who really brought it back

to "life" in the 60's. Paul Simon heard him while in London, and the rest ,

    as they say, is history.

  • perfeita interpretação...essa linda musica de Simon & Garfunkel....

  • What an incredible song and video. She' still has it, love! It ranks with the best out there.

    Full of Spirit and Emotion!

    5+ (thumbs up),

    J. Austin/Bear

  • This makes me think of Rosemary and Thyme, which makes me think of Felicity Kendal.Mmmmmmmmmmmmmm

  • @BigBulgeCheeks

Never realised that this song is about those two ladies ;-)

  • @Bjowolf2 it isnt, but in my mind everything comes back to felicity kendal

  • @BigBulgeCheeks

    I know - I was joking ;-)

And I do see what you mean - she does have a certain

    thing about her.

  • @Bjowolf2 I know you were joking. and by 'thing about her' i take it you mean 'nice arse'

  • @BigBulgeCheeks

haha, good - well, that one too, now that you mention it -

but think she is very sexy in general. ;o)

  • Good innovation given this song has been sung for that many versions!!!

  • I felt transformed.what could be better than feeling lifted and given wings.keep up the good work Carly.

  • Esta canción...es de lo mas hermoso que he escuchado desde hace ya tiempo, la letra en Español es preciosa, geniallllllll

  • Not bad, but not as good as the Celtic Woman, Sarah Brightman or Amy Nuttall versions. Check them out - you won't be disappointed.

  • Agreed. Leaves Eyes version damn good too.

  • Eah... "let me know at least he will try"...

    That's truth behind this song.

  • I love every great song she covers! her versions are magic

  • Amazing lyrics... I like it much more then "original" S&G.

  • very-very-very much good version!

  • OMG, she never fails to be great. Such a voice and such emotion put into the song.

  • Grande voz, bela interpretação de uma das belas canções feitas até agora, silvia

  • Gostei tambem

  • She's truly one of Gods gifts...

  • Love this song. I always thought it was a simon+garfunkel song but I just Wiki'd it and it's an old english song from the 1600's. Which sounds about right when u listen to the tune, sounds sorat medeival.....

  • Love this song, love Scarborough, and love Carly's music. Perfect combination!

  • Simplesmente Maravilhosa!

    Incomparável!

    ..Simply Marvelous!

    Incomparable!

  • apples/oranges Brightman's is beautiful, so is this. it's all good. I just close my eyes and enjoy

  • your such a hater

  • Imagine that this song has been sung for hundreds of years and still today by artists from all over the world. How many songs from today will have that kind of power?

  • not many can u imagine someone doing opps i did it again??

  • i flute and harmonica this as if i'm ian anderson... it rocks or lullabyes... truly.

    truthfully, and not tritely.

  • @flymurdererfly My thoughts exactly.

Sometimes I wonder how many other treasures we've lost, though.

  • I was an immediate and lifelong fan of hers the first time I heard "Killing Me Softly".

    Thanks for posting the song.

  • Se tocar esta cancion con la Flauta xD

  • Truly touching...

  • One of the most moving songs of al time.

    ~cg5 5*****z

  • Absolutely beautiful!

  • I am moved by the song

  • Carly - you rock!!!!!

  • Great Version, very haunting indeed!

  • She had breast cancer when she recorded this

  • Carly is the best female singer this century.

If this diesn't move you. you are dead

  • love carley simon voice and beauty

  • love this version. i also love simon and garfunckel verstion.

  • wow one of the best interpretations i saw

  • At first I didn´t like this version, but it kind of grew on me as I listened so now I think it´s pretty good.

Not the best I´ve heard, but still good.

  • It's not really a cover Version, at least the original is not from S&G. The Song dates back to the middleage, author unknown. Simon & Garfunkel just made the well known version "Scarborough Fair/Canticle" which is a mashup with "Canticle". When you listen to their version you will recognize a second melody and a second text line.

  • I like the; S& G Original ..but..

    this version blows me away!

  • Its a wonderful cover from Simon&Garfunkel

    great voice:)

  • Obviously Carly knows folk .... and knows it so well to keep it fresh and beautiful.

    Bless you, dear.

  • Anglo Saxon folk song, sung by a Genius.

    You go girl

  • omg, i'm in heaven and watching this incredible version of this song and guess what, it's the correct progression..simon & garfunkile tweeked it in a differant way, but this is obviously the authentic, sung by a woman

  • Correct progression in what sense? The song has been around since the 17th century...Also, the original (pre 20th century) was most likely sung from the point of view of a man.

  • The original is made for a man and a woman singing against each each other and may have at least 11 strophes including three times the intro. Man and woman do request in four strophes completely impossible tasks from each other.

  • it was ok i think she took the song in a way that i don't like but it was good fine fine

  • Lovely phrasing...a beautiful interpretation.

  • Magical song sung by Carly Simon...

perfect! Her voice is so sweet and clear.

    Lovely!

    Excellent video.

  • another version

  • Nice Version,thanks...

  • just to show you good lyrics dont die right on man woot

  • carli i love you. youre forever best woman singer of all time

  • Just beautiful, like everything that she does.

  • This song is a Paul Simon composition toshirobike.

  • WTF? Its a medievil English folk song - 500 years before Paul Simon - Knobber!

  • No need to be infantile mate just because you can type on the internet. Yes I was wrong.

The following lyrics comprise most of the more well-known verses as they are commonly sung. A small handful of them were sung by Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel on their 1966 album 'Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme,' which popularised the song. Paul Simon learned the song from Martin Carthy, a famous folk singer in the UK, while he was on tour there.

  • I think it was a good couple a centuries before 500 years ago, mate.

  • The manner in which the song is commonly sung can be traced to Simon and Garfunkel. The original mode of the tune is much more archaic.

  • "Scarborough Fair" appears to derive from an older (and now obscure) Scottish ballad, The Elfin Knight which has been traced at least as far back as 1670 and may well be earlier.

  • Cool. Thanks for sharing that, walkingbear. This recording is crystal clear, as much as it is hauntingly harmonic, beautiful and captivating. It leaves only beauty for the imagination. I smell the forest, feel the light wind, and own the music in my mind! Heavenly.

  • music by king artur movie ??????????

  • Is it just me or is she more beautiful than ever?

  • very nice song.

  • I never heard this before. I love Carly`s voice.

  • no se mu cho , pero esto es simplemente fantastico

  • simplestme belo. é quando a vontade de

Deus e do homem estão em harmonia.

  • beautiful

  • Which of you know the wind instrument which counter balances the tenor voice of CS? It starts with a p..............or is it an r?????? Who are you to judge this any less than five stars without the facts? , Who has ever heard a flute- like voice when it is a p? Por los hispanohablantes que no tienen educacion por capitularse bien la musica en su propia lengua materna, ayyyyyyyy.

This is FIVE STARS. Ethereal. Hey guys and gals, listen again. Close your eyes this time.

    Maria Solan

  • piccalo?

  • Damn, you are good. Piccolo. But I am only doing this from my ears. I really do think it is a piccolo. Is it no hauntingly gorgeous?

Either that, or it is a single bagpipe, ripped off from some well clad Irishman on the country side, hoping for tourist money. Recorder? Computerized to sound so lovely. Does not sound like that - as they do with Cher and other recordings of singers who can't hold their own.

    PICCOLO!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Good job, Somonoi!

  • It's not a single bagpipe. Bagpipes are horrid. Even a computerized recorder wouldn't be able to sound like that... So yeah.

    Thanks.

  • This was a joke, obviously not funny for you. Sorry. Not funny.

  • XD sorry

    It's cool.

  • Cool. I just want to get to the beauty of this: when I listen to this I feel some ethereal mystery that brings something out of my heart and soul. Either it is a past with my first love, or something internal about happiness as a state of beauty - if yo can grab it. I urge you to listen to the song again, and keep your eyes closed. Nice to have someone with which to discuss the artistic nature of the all mighty Carly. Thanks!

  • It is indeed haunting and personally I feel like Im in the forest staring at wonderful prairies where the sun kisses the grasses and the butterflies flutter so free

  • fantasic

  • HIPPYYYYYYY

  • Yo opino que todo video de Carly Simon y los clasicos del sitio son lo mas por que son la mejor cosa que nos paso "gracias you tube"

  • Muchas gracias a quien tuvo la genial idea de colocar a Carly aqui en en este sitio.

  • I finally figured out who she reminds me of. Steven Tyler.

  • I think a more flute-like voice fits the song. Not so high it hurts your ears and not quite so low as Carly's.

  • i agree. and she enunciates (excuse my spelling) kinda...unpleasently. but i <333 the music! pretty version.

  • I must agree with TheCursedBlade...

i dont know, but I dont quite like this version.

Simon and garfunkel does their song intensly mutch better!!

This is also the only piece where I think that Sarah Brightman is doing well...

But this was not the one of the good versions, I think...

  • I don't like...

  • What don't you like ?

  • The video is beautiful, the song too, but I don't know... I prefer Sarah Brightman's version, or Hayley's. ^^

  • I agree. sorry.

  • I agree with secretside7, Carly Simon really transports us to the 70's, She is the best.

  • magic

  • her voice in songs of this kind transports you to another world. as sensuous as she can be in other uptempo numbers, she is heavenly with a touch of melancholy for me. unique carly.

  • Very well said. I'm just becoming a Carly fan, and her voice is so magical, in my opinion, from all I've heard, she's the queen of melancholy!

  • Carly Simon and James Taylor. I am Carly's best fan.

  • She's 63 this year. Im getting to be 50.

EMail me if you can sing this better

  • cyberdude61.

Im 58 and i can't sing, but that doesnt mean that I think that this is a average interpretation.

    greets!

  • Her rendition of the song is amazing. About the video, the black & white parts really ruin it... Fav'd, still, because of the singing.

  • Nice Guitar but I still say Simon and Garfunkel are the best when it comes to this song. Listen to the version with Andy Williams if you really want chills from this old ENGLISH classic.

  • I disagree. Celtic women did an astounding version of this song.

I like it better because the woman who sings it there is a soprano and it sounds better that was.

  • I would also like to point out that Simon and Garfunkel didn't write the song in the first place. It's based on Scottish bard songs from the 1400's and The Irish Tenors have a nice version of it.

  • It's an old joke but here comes the Englishman.

Carly Simon is no way a soprano. Mezzo at best.

This has Celtic influence the same way all New York Policemen are Irish. Cannot be seperated, but there is no truth in it.

Has merit as a performance, but the pupils are reading far too deep and finding nothing. ;-)

  • Not true at all. I've had to study the song when I was taking Music History. The song is based off a town called Scarborough Fayre which was a resort like town in the late medieval times. People who could afford the coastal resorts large "Fayre" or Bizarre of foreign products went to that town to escape the plague. The true lyrics are lost forever.

  • Cyberdude61 - floppinusername was referring to 'Celtic Woman' in which Hayley Westenra indeed does a soprano lead vocal. Mezzo... not...

And yes it's originally an English Folk song, not Irish... and yes, Hayley Westenra (the singer from Celtic Woman) was NOT born in Ireland, she is descended from Irish family and is a New Zealand native...

Regardless of all that garbage, go listen to Hayley Westenra sing this song!

  • I'm a fan of the female voice. Hayley makes singers like Elaine Paige look pedestrian, so I apologise if I made you think I was talking about Hayley.

I guess my argument starts with Carly Simon's voice. Mezzo, Alto or Tenor? I was thinking of the singer, not the song.

  • Paul Simon added his own lyrics to the song giving it a 2 demensional feel. where Art would sing one part of the song and Paul the other. Its basically two songs mended together. So Simon & Garfunkels version is somwhat of their own creation.

  • Actually when looking at the original lyrics for Paul Simon's Version and the one we had to study in choir His was arranged by someone else. He sang the song he did not write it. The part he did write was the back ground part of the lyrics. The one sang behind the main "Scarborough Fair" Lyric. So in a way he never wrote "Scarborough Fair" he wrote "Canticle" the part sang with Scarborough Fair"

  • You can say that this is an American Classic just if you think that all Americans are actually English that came on Mayflower!!! It's an old English song about port that calls Scarborough...My god you Americans think that whole world is yours...

  • So whats wrong with that?

  • What's wrong is that it isn't

  • You idiots are the ones who think americans think the whole world is ours. I personally wish we'd stay out of the rest of the worlds affairs and let you all kill yourselves and destroy your countries with war like you've been doing for thousands of years. You fools have yet to learn anything from past events. I've had it with having to come over there and clean house for clowns incapable of doing it themselves. You people will never learn until we blow up on planet or poison us with some plague.

  • Right on! Take this conflict in Georgia for example. When the Russians rolled in, burning houses and killing people, who was the first to stand up to Russia and let them know they can't bully smaller countries?... I don't think it was the damn EU or UK. Rice, Bush, McCain and several others hit the airwaves letting those Russian bastards know; You mess with our friends, you mess with us. Now, Russia is pulling out and are leaving Georgians alone.

  • And it certainly wasnt the American hating pussified Canadians either.

  • Have mercy!!! This the music video of Scarborough Fair! Write your theories of everything somewhere else or even outside of your room.

  • It's not the peoples choice, it's the governmen'ts.

  • Don't stereotype us please.

  • great one

    shes one of the best

  • Yes! I'm glad she is singing the lyrics in the old English style as they've been handed down! In an old singing style too. What a pleasure to listen to this!

  • Carly's contralto gives this gem a different shine

  • I agree she is still stunning.... even if she weren't, she sings with so much soul and we have always been touched well by her music

  • this song looks like the original singer to me since it was sing in a traditional manner haha.

  • Carly really owns this song - just amazing. As old as this is, I feel like I'm listening to its author, but then she has always written intelligent and sophisticated lyrics about the complexity of relationships.

  • Like the song, not sure about the "Scarborough" pronounciation!

  • Gave me chills, in a good way!

  • it's so peaceful, i could pass out here and now

  • Amy Nuttall's version is the best, probably because she is english so can say Scarborough properly.

  • very nice!
