  • This clip was taken by Japanese reporters who were in Kwangjoo during the massacre and compiled by McGill University in Toronto, Canada.

I've seen and shown that footage at almost every annual Kwangju People's Uprising commemoration held by UCLA Korean Student Ass. from 1984 to 1991.

But, every time I see it, I can't hold me tears.

  • 전두환같은 새끼가 살아 있다는게 대한민국 민주주의의 수치다...

  • The Kwangju uprising happened in May 1980. The movie is based on a 1988 story called "There a petal silently falls" by Choi Yun, and the song is the Shin Jung-hyun song "A Petal" as performed by Kim Chu-ja (from the late 60s). In the story, the girl's brother's friends had never met her, but as you see in the opening, the director shows the girl singing the song "A petal" to her brother's friends, which makes clear that they met her, and ties the name of the story with the song (and the movie).

  • You're the best for posting all this info. I've loved and puzzled over this song (and the movie) for a long time, having seen it at a San Francisco film festival. Thank you so much for clarifying everything!

  • Gwangju massacre happened in 1980. Tiananmen Square happened in 1989. Anyway, this movie is great. Hope someone put the animation sequence from this movie. Really heartbreaking story.

  • funny same shit was happening almost at the exact same time it was on Tiananmen Square
