HAHA!! I'm watching this weird movie on Chiller channel and I think "wow, this psycho killer guy looks familiar". I look it up and no wonder! It's John Savage (Claude). He has aged well as has Treat Williams (Berger). I love this movie.
The hippies... seems like an enjoyable enough time, but most of them either never cared or stopped caring about the "revolution" rhetoric and just used the label of hippie as an excuse to self-indulge to great excess, often blowing their minds in the process and either dying young or going through years of hellish rehab and sober/non-sober cycles. They destroyed themselves.
Still, they had much better music back then, and society seemed in many ways a lot less uptight.
Who says the people of the 60's have to have all the fun?
We can have a revolution too! There are plenty of injustices in the world that we can fight against! We all wish we had lived in the 60's because they had such community, and they had a revolution to fight for. Lets make future generations wish they had lived in the 2010's!! We can have our own revolution!
@LadyFarowin I like that idea, too. I was born in the sixties ('65) so I was too young. My aunt was a hippie and I loved going over to my grandparents esp when her freinds were there. They were fun.
the one where they are getting stoned? it's called Hashish and I think that it's together with Donna on the original soundtrack. I can send it to you if you like ; )
i love the awkward silent moment after Claude says he's going to the army in a couple days and Berger saing "i think we can help you" -- and then the Berger's nod/wink'n'widesmile, that's so funny man! lol ;))
this is a great movie(i know that everyone else writes the same), but i am fan of the 60's and wish of all my heart that i could live back then....It isn't fair.
I want to be born in the early 50s and grow up in the late 50s early 60s because I love the clothes and the kitch of those eras (LOVE DORIS DAY)...maybe not the conservative part....and I want to be a teen/college in the late 60s.
I also love 20s-40s era, too. Can't beat old Hollywood...
Ahaa im th same, well kinda i planned mine out a bit erlier than yours;
I wouldve been born in th late 40's so i had my childhood mainly in th 50's, then i wouldve been a teenager in th 60's then young adult in th 70's nd so on nd so forth... tht would be the perfect life for me =D
I agree w/ most that has been said here. I wish we could work on peace and love to-but have it be for real. Sadly, anything truthful in this world gets turned into a fashion statement-like the peace sign for example. The peace sign has always meant peace to me-not something I'd buy on a shirt b/c it's "cool". I think the world would be a better place if people were apart of something b/c it's what they believe in,when you're a part of something for the wrong reasons,it looses meaning.
I like the little dance routine they do for "Donna." It makes me miss my childhood, when hippies used to hang out at a local park.
They were of course teenagers & young adults, very beautiful and always very kind to us kids. They did fun things like play guitar, dance, paint sidewalk art and watch sunsets. I thought they were wonderful.
It was a small, mostly homogeneous town on L.I., sheltered from so many of the problems the country was experiencing. It was a great childhood.
out of sincere curiosity........why? only ask as i did. i was 18 in 1965. would like to know how a younger generation perceives that time. of course that presumes you are a teen now. cheers.
out of sincere curiosity........why? only ask as i did. i was 18 in 1965. would like to know how a younger generation perceives that time. of course that presumes you are a teen now. cheers.
haha yes i am a teen. and, well, firstly i hate all the music around these days. i love the beatles, the stones, the easybeats, etc.
i love the fashion of the 60s as well, and i love hippies. the idea of having nothing, but having absolutely everything, and peace and love and unity etc etc, its just wonderful.
maybe it wasnt all as wonderful as i imagine it, but i still think it was a lot better than these days.
ik i am so with you on everything, i remember for my 8th grade trip we went to the rock and roll hall of fame and all i could think was "wow i was born in the wrong time"
The 60s in America was not a bed of roses. There was a lot of violence - I mean A LOT. Many people couldn't get along with their parents (or children). Some aspects of the hippie scene were great but it had its dark side, too, and a lot of people got hurt by it. There was the fear of nuclear war. There was widespread police brutality.
Many on both the right and the left seemed to feel the country was going to hell in a handbasket - it made for a lot of anger and distrust on both sides.
yeah, i can imagine there was a lot of dark to it too. i dont know, i just think these days people just don't care about things. love and peace are just totally lost.
Yes, they are beautiful ideals. And I do admire the lengths some hippies went to to try to make the dream a reality.
But I think we can still work on peace & love. And we can be more powerful, even, because we don't drop out of society and impoverish ourselves, making ourselves invisible to the system.
Join a cause you believe in - one that works on peace & love - and give it whatever you can afford in time and/or money.
And remember to bring peace & love into your own life.

yes we did...worried about being drafted and dieing in a useless non war to make the rich, richer. worried about being persecuted and beaten by the fascist police, worried about nuclear war and all our good leaders white and black being murdered by the forces that rule today!!!
I heard that and i was so dissapointed. she is amazing. but Gavin is amazing as well and sooo hot! I will still go see it because Gavin is so tallented. but i am still bummed about Eden.
No wonder Stephen Stills picked Donnie Dacus to sing with him He's pretty good. I forgot just how wonderful this movie was Maybe Stephen should have been in it wouldn't that have been wonderful!
The hippie movement was....ehhh....not completely successful. Most of the people who were "hippies" back then, stopped that behavior in the 80's and became just like their parents. And because of the huge problem with drugs during the 80's and 90's those same "hippies" shettered their children from the things that they experimented in so easily when they were teens. The youth of today will not rise because they have been sheltered and taught to obey authority whether they like it or not.
I don't know if you can say the Hippie movement was "not completely sucessful". The youth movement contributed to the push to end the Vietnam war, didn't it? Although you made good points, about drugs, youths speaking out might be a good thing.
The American view on the war was changing anyway at the time. And the people who were REALLY fighting towards ending the war were not hippies, but were into organizations and protests groups. The hippies of the time were experimenting with strong drugs to "free thier minds" and communal living. Sure they were against the war, but they were seldom taken seriously. The hippie movement helped usher in a new age of strong drugs use in America that is still affecting people today.
Hippies were not "bad" people, but largely selfish and childish in thier newfound belief that peace and love could change everything and make it okay; that drugs use was a way to open your mind; that free love was an acceptable act. Actually, many suffered later from using strong drugs and many of thier children born during the time had effects from the drugs use. Many sexual diseases became pervalant as well. The hippies eventually "grew up" and began to take responsability for thier actions.
Because, actually, many of those "hippies" were from middle-class and fairly well doing families. They were just experimenting with a new way of thinking and living. They didn't NEED to live on the streets, they CHOSE to, and many Americans could not stand them because they were "acting like fools" in thier minds. So, NO, the movement was not successful. There is no more draft today so teens and young people don't feel that thier choice to fight or not is taken away. They just try to live life.
Good points. But many of them still belive in questioning authority, and are no doubt today against the present war, and supporting the ecology, and so on. I agree with your comments on sex and drugs. What good came out of it? Many people died from strong drug use.
Many hippies eventually became like thier parents in the end. They focused on carrers and children and stopped worrying about the environment and authority. There was no time. Children change everything. You want to protect them from a hard life. The things that were okay for you are not okay for them. And you start to respect authority more because you have become an authority figure for your children and see the necessity of it. Raising a family takes presedence over everything else.
whats the name of the song at 6:05 i've seen this movie like 20 times and i have no idea of whats its name

How come there is no hippie movement now?
Things are worse now then back then. Why hasn't the youth risen?
cooldookie 3 years ago
The hippie movement was....ehhh....not completely successful. Most of the people who were "hippies" back then, stopped that behavior in the 80's and became just like their parents. And because of the huge problem with drugs during the 80's and 90's those same "hippies" shettered their children from the things that they experimented in so easily when they were teens. The youth of today will not rise because they have been sheltered and taught to obey authority whether they like it or not.
MoonEyes144 3 years ago
I don't know if you can say the Hippie movement was "not completely sucessful". The youth movement contributed to the push to end the Vietnam war, didn't it? Although you made good points, about drugs, youths speaking out might be a good thing.
000266617 3 years ago
The American view on the war was changing anyway at the time. And the people who were REALLY fighting towards ending the war were not hippies, but were into organizations and protests groups. The hippies of the time were experimenting with strong drugs to "free thier minds" and communal living. Sure they were against the war, but they were seldom taken seriously. The hippie movement helped usher in a new age of strong drugs use in America that is still affecting people today.
MoonEyes144 3 years ago
Hippies were not "bad" people, but largely selfish and childish in thier newfound belief that peace and love could change everything and make it okay; that drugs use was a way to open your mind; that free love was an acceptable act. Actually, many suffered later from using strong drugs and many of thier children born during the time had effects from the drugs use. Many sexual diseases became pervalant as well. The hippies eventually "grew up" and began to take responsability for thier actions.
MoonEyes144 3 years ago
Because, actually, many of those "hippies" were from middle-class and fairly well doing families. They were just experimenting with a new way of thinking and living. They didn't NEED to live on the streets, they CHOSE to, and many Americans could not stand them because they were "acting like fools" in thier minds. So, NO, the movement was not successful. There is no more draft today so teens and young people don't feel that thier choice to fight or not is taken away. They just try to live life.
MoonEyes144 3 years ago 2
Good points. But many of them still belive in questioning authority, and are no doubt today against the present war, and supporting the ecology, and so on. I agree with your comments on sex and drugs. What good came out of it? Many people died from strong drug use.
000266617 3 years ago
Many hippies eventually became like thier parents in the end. They focused on carrers and children and stopped worrying about the environment and authority. There was no time. Children change everything. You want to protect them from a hard life. The things that were okay for you are not okay for them. And you start to respect authority more because you have become an authority figure for your children and see the necessity of it. Raising a family takes presedence over everything else.

Quite frankly, sailing around NYC to see the Statue of Liberty would have been more fun than sitting around getting wasted with these people.

It starts at 6:04 with "Hashish" - the name of the song - followed by a loose enumeration of stuff that explains why it sounds the way it does.
