  • Rommel did not agree that the invasion would come at the Pas de Calais, but correctly predicted the beaches of Normandy as the landing spot. It is well known that he stood on Omaha Beach itself, and said 'This is where they will land'. He thought this because the shape of Omaha Beach was very similar to the beach at Salerno, where the Allies had landed in 1943. F. Gockel's machine gun is also the wrong gun. A valiant effort by the BBC but they shouldn't have put this out if not 100% accurate.

  • @jonnyb192 I really don't see how depicting the wrong machine gun really makes that much of a difference to the majority of viewers, I seem to recall this program went out at a prime time slot originally.

  • @Anders2185 Never claimed it made much of a difference to the majority of the viewers, but as an historical documentary, shouldn't it assist us in imagining the way things looked and sounded at the time it is depicting, by portraying what historical records tell us happened? To me that's important, but you're right that it doesn't change the fact that this documentary is useful in a basic educational sense.

  • @jonnyb192 Yeah wasn't implying you thought it was important or anything, just that it was merely a minor detail that only the more educated would notice :)

  • my grandfather was the last surviving sevicemen live untill 2010,eddy mccann.....GOD BLESS ...LUKE MCCANN

  • Thanks for the upload!

  • The War had already been won before d-day. It was won by the Russians at Stalingrad. Stalingrad was the turning point. It was the pivotal battle. From January 1942, Russia were on the advance pushing back the Germans. What d-day done was speed up the end of the War but it was the Russians who truly won it.

  • @KrackowKid this is not the whole picture of WW2. Without the democratic army, the live in Euro would be worse then Nazi occupation. Moreover, the cost or casualty would be double or triple. You also have to pray that Nazi will not have the A-bomb and Jet fighter and bomber before the war ended....

    God has mercy on us

  • @KrackowKid evil will never win. I believe USSR will never win without Democratic army. Evil communist can cheat, and people can be cheated for once, not forever! That's why no evil or brutal regime last more than a hundred years. Our history shows us already.

  • @octchung The USSR no longer exists. It broke up 20 years ago. Russia now exists. I'm not talking about Communism anyway. I'm talking about D-Day in WW2 and Russia's contribution in winning WW2. Why are you talking about Communism ? If you wish to talk about that then Go to videos on utube about karl Marx and comment

  • @KrackowKid Always remember russia was supplied by the good ole USA ( we were allies)

  • @0269ish Like fuck they did lad. You need to read about Russian War production during WW2. Russia set up their factories out of reach of German bombers beyond the Urals mountains. By 1943, Russia were turning out 1,300 T34 tanks a month and 1,000 planes a month. That production was in the Industrial factories in the Urals. There was a brief period of 12 months where the Americans supplied Russia until they were able to move their factories beyond the reach of German bombers

  • @KrackowKid "like fuck they did": lend lease to USSR =13k Tanks, 380k Trucks, 2.5k Carriers, 35k Motorcycles, 51k Jeeps, 9k Tractors, 21k Aircraft, 2k Locomotives, 11k Railway Cars, 5k Anti-tank Guns, 8k Anti-Aircraft Guns, 136k Machine Pistols, 40k Radios, 380k Field Telephones, 2m km Telephone Cable, 15m pairs Boots, 53m squ ms Wool, 90m Squ ms Cotton, 49k tons Leather, 5m tons Food. These categories are not exhaustive and supplied from 1941 to 1945: not merely "a brief period" :-)

  • @elrjames777 Google "Soviet combat vehicle production during World War II" That's all I have to say to you. You must have gotten all those staistics out of a U.S History book. They tend to distort things a little.

  • @KrackowKid The info given was from Walter Scott Dunn "The Soviet Economy and the Red Army 1930 to 1945": OK he is American, but also rather an authority on the topic, and the figures are supported by Soviet documents summarizing the deliveries. Dunn does, also, give a 1941 / 45 figure of 109k USSR manufactured AFV's as against 42k German ones. I suppose if I must draw a conclusion, it would be that the 10% extra lend lease AFV's could have been the margin of victory in many battles.

  • @elrjames777 Does it say how many men they supplied ? :)

  • @KrackowKid I realize what you are getting at, and your question certainly introduces a worthwhile, if tendentious, consideration with which I probably would not unduly argue. However, this is an entirely separate issue from the simple factual correction I was addressing to the only fallacious and politically bias assertions set out in your original post: "like fuck they did" (no: lend lease was considerable) and "a brief period of 12 months" (no: it lasted from 1941 to 1945) :-)

  • @elrjames777 4 million tons of supplies is not exactly brief is it. Also how many brave merchant navy lives did the 74 Arctic convoys cost to get these supplies to the Red Army.

  • @Anders2185 Yes: and that 4 million tons was only the Arctic Convoy component: an additional 12 million came to the USSR by other routes. Interestingly enough, David Irving first ran into trouble with the "establishment" with his book "Destruction of Convoy PQ17, which is actually available as an online PDF download :-)

  • @0269ish They supplied some equipment and for a period but when Russia got into its stride and moved its factories to the urals, it was catering for all its own.

  • @BritishHistoryWWII

That is harsh O_o We are not such loosers.

But I might give to you that it would be a tough fight ;-)

  • Mister Gockel killed 2000 US soldiers alone on D-day, but who killed the rest ?

  • Germany is still the most powerful than usa and uk..

  • Great documentary, thanks!
