I have interested in keeping my motor temp under 150F for the entire battery but go as fast as 45mph. With 3s and 25/76, the motor reaches 170F in like 7-8 minutes.

Yesterday, i tried 4s (using my friends 4S compatibility esc) on VXL motor. My gearing was 25/76. The motor got to 170F in like 3 min. If i use 18/86 gearing, will I be able to achieve my objective? Will the high RPM in this setup produce a lot of heat, although there will be less amps due to high volts? Thanks

@2007tacoma You both got it right. It's been a well known fact that this Rustler was highly modified. everything was optimized for speed and down force. The body was a Bandit body from JConcepts and the front wheels were also Bandits Anacondas.

Nice Vids! I have a VXL and was wondering how much the Mamba ESC and 4s Lipo are? I have a 3s 5400 Lipo and am debating getting an 3s 8000, which is like 400 dollars to gain 4-5 mph or get a Mamba ESC with 4s Lipo to gain 10-12 mph. What do you think would be more worth it in terms of price and reliability? Thanks

I recommend going with the Mamba Max since it has been a proven reliable controller and is a great value. Castle offers a 1yr warranty which by far the best in the industry. The Mamba Max can be bought new for about $120 and for the 4S I recommend NeuEnergy 4100 30C lipos. But I think you should try to optimize your set up on 3S first with the Mamba Max before you try 4S.

mm esc can take 4s, and has been know to take much more, but you MUST disable the BEC, otherwise ull blw your rx system

i ahve a vxl pede and the esc kept going out on me so i put a 300$ novak system in it and split the brushless inside the motor in half

Watch out for motor RPM's going too high as well as the motor getting too hot. This seems to be a somewhat common problem for Novak motors.

Got a quick question, got a VXL rusty, and I keep busting the rear half shafts at the yokes @ 10v..any suggestions? a few people have suggested using jato shafts/yokes..if I can stop this from happening, I can possibly make it out one weekend with you and Nick for some speed runs

You can use the Jato shafts or you can do a HPI dogbone conversion. Just do a google or search in the traxxas forums for "Rustler HPI dogbone conversion". Make sure you get the hardened steel drive cups. I did this

conversion and haven't had to replace anything yet since then.

Traxxas's look like a FANTASTIC deal and a great price. I went nitro and it drove me away because it was costing insane amounts of money. Looks like these low priced RTR brushless trucks will bring me back in. VXL+Lipo+Lipo charger and off you go to 70+mph! It's truly amazing how far R/C has come in just the last 6 or so years. Fastest truck I've had? Brushless RC18T that went 60mph. Still regret trading it for nitro to this day. Now it's time for some 1/10th brushless mayhem! Muahahaha!!!

If you run it like you are bashing, then it will get hot very quick. I am using cooling fans to keep temps down and my runs don't last for more than 6 to 8 seconds each with about a 20 to 30 second break between runs. And yes, high temps reduce the life of the motor.

great runs! How long have you been running 4S, approx. run time? Have you had any issues come up while running 4s?

On the 4S 4100mAH pack, I get about 15 to 20 speed runs. The last ones are slower because the voltage drops. No issues on 4S other than stripped spur gears. I do stop for a few minutes every 3 or 4 runs to check the car over.

Hint... he's from Houston and heavily into drag racing!haha I am a long timer r/c guy doin drag and highspeed runs. My bandit vxl was clocked at 74 with a velineon 3500kv, mamba, 36/76 gearing, and 3s 5000 lipo. I have only run 4+ lipos in my pancars. I just can;t get over how well you car handles these speeds. People get so into the powerplants and forget about fabricating the chassis and body/ suspension for these cars to be able to behave on pavement. Awesome!

There are very few heat issues with this set up and yes, I have a couple of aluminum wings that are being used to keep the car on the ground.

On this round, I ran the car about a dozen times back and forth without a problem.

Hmm, 4S LiPo?  That's 14.8v! Didn't know you could do that with any Velineon compatible ESC. You need to get a camera capable of recording 30fps instead of 15fps. You can't even see it go by. :)

Add up all the money your spending on fuel for the year. Say you buy a gallon a weekend. At 25.00 a gallon 4 gallons a month is 100.00 a month times 12 months is 1200.00 a year.

A VXL will cost you 280.00 Good everything charger 150.00 3 cell lipo 150.00 Ballancer 60.00 and some NIMH packs to play around with 200.00 thats about 4 packs. 840.00. Now remember I didnot include the price of the Nitro car or truck. That was just fuel. s

Actually so that they have the same voltage and so it will reduce the chances of any one cell going below 3.0V and killing it.
