Pete is still alive, about 10 days ago (early Oct '08) he played a concert in Brooklyn. He's 89!!! Bless him and all he's done to protect our Democracy!
Ahem. I have no idea what Highlander is (I intend to find out in a minute) but I want to thank you for posting this and for the integrity and kindness that Pete obviously saw and loved in you. It has been a sorrow to me that I never met Pete. And to my complete surprise I feel now that .... well, that Pete has said "Hello and goodbye" to me. Thank you so much.
The Highlander Folk School is many things, including a training center for civil rights workers and union organizers. It is thoroughly hated by racists, Republicans, and the rich. It has been denounced by Joe McCarthy, J. Edgar Hoover, Strom Thurmond, and Phil Gramm as "communist". It is, in short, one of the finest places in Americxa.
I visited the Highlander from England in the mid-80s. I had some trouble finding it and ended up taking a lift on the back of a tractor. The people there were really hospitable and invited me to share the cowhand's trailer for the night. The photographs, tapes and videos in the archive are an amazing resource about the 'other America' and the tremendous battles that have been fought for civil and trade union rights. A commitment and tenacity encapsulated in Pete's music. Solidarity for ever!

Love Peter! You're incredible, we're so lucky to have you on earth, still storytelling, still, playing banjo, still singing...
