  • Yes, charming - but received as if one were some invited guest to an Edwardian soiree where, during the evening proceedings after 'tea and fancies' the adored host's daughter is regaled to do her piece in the parlour among other piano forte renditions, spoon playing and a conjuring trick or two given by other invitees. And, all to much demure merriment and respectful quiet applause.

  • idk but there is something that is bugging me about her voice. it doesnt have that vocal quality.

  • @sadfissad i think she was very young in that recording, probably just a teen

  • Dame Julie Andrews is my vocal hero!

  • damn! this broad is annoying!

  • Classical pieces should only be performed by classical performers, because they understand the style. My two cents.

  • @UncleTito72 Some classical performers ruin classical pieces. It is good to hear this piece sung so beautifully. I bet Handel would have been standing and clapping.

  • @nnosd Sure. SMH & RME.

  • This is wrong on so many levels. Stick to musical theatre, Julie.

  • @EmilySoprano On an over-intensified, forced level. Hard to find fault with pure beauty unless you have been ill-trained.

  • Marvellous, unique, and beautiful voice. My favorite female vocalist.

And Handel did a pretty good job with this, too.

  • But wasn't she about 16 when she recorded this?

  • Eh. She has a great voice, but I didn't like her interpretation of the piece. There was absolutely no embellishment on the recap. Poorly done.

  • A great lady indeed.

  • I'm surprised that nobody has commented on this Handel aria for the past 4 months, sung beautifully by Julie Andrews. Almost as good as the versions by Andreas and Kathleen!

  • @JMBC45611 I found it a little too slow. But lovely all the same.

  • I trhink we should remember that this is probably the kind of voices Handel had at his disposal. No international divas, but local english talents.

  • @achantus1

Handel went bankrupt... twice, if I remember rightly!

  • @achantus1 Actually Handel had some brilliant Italian divas at his disposal - astonishing for the English audience of the day. But the first performance of this piece was by the excellent English tenor John Beard.

Julie Andrews didn't have the technique to cope with classical music at a professional level.

  • @137Newton And where was she lacking in this performance? Perfectly tuned; never pushing her voice. I think she had one of the best naturally beautiful voices ever recorded. Many "classical" voices push their sound past loveliness trying make more sound and volume than is natural. "Professional" level is often bottom scum shouting.

  • Wonderful song sung by a great lady!

  • An incredibly pure voice.
