  • How do you teach a machinist patience? Have him set up a screw machine. Don't let him do anything else until he's set up for at least ten different jobs with fifty parts each and all of his parts are within +/-0.003.

  • brilliant machines, my job is setting CVA 8 and a 12 which are simular. at a local firm but where finding it hard to find people to get cams cut for them now

  • add a air bubbler ,from your air line to your coolant. Over weekend stink will begone.Low pressure

  • Ever have probs with rust?Never liked soluable oils an coolents in browines..Plus over the weekend it can really stink from bacteria when you come in on Monday...Itsapookie..if you think B&S setup people are getting hard to find,you should try an find a True Bullard VTL setup man...Really hard now a days..Everything is programmed in for the operator..Old machines still do the job well..Its the setup an operator who make it bad..Take care of the machine,an it will run another 100 years.

  • we finally got rid of our last brownie but we still have six acme gridley rattling around haha. All are very tight machines all the jobs ran on them are 8 sec and under and hold +-.001 at the very least. Mechanical engineering at its best!

  • what is that? a cam based vertical lathe? I'd rather have a bunch of swiss cnc's humming away. Not to mention change over time. But yes the old cammers are marvels of engineering.

  • that's right 1965. it is time consuming to set up but it works good. i wish someone would post a foot treadle screw machine. those are cool.

  • Eh, they aren't bad. You have to know what you are doing on them.

  • no you just have to run leaded steel haha if you want your parts to have a semi-good finish. jk jk but unfortunately the talent base for these machines are shrinking at an alarming rate!

  • Apologies for off-topic, but I'm looking for some advice on drilling/tapping a 14mm deep M3 thread in S303 stainless Hex stock. Current supplier is struggling to get a decent quality hole drilled, resulting in mal-formed threads.

    OSG TRF Forming taps or other hi quality forming taps

  • M3xo.5?...use a .109 drill(7/64) for a tap use a #3..........hope that was helpfull.. or just order your hardware from Raf manufactures in Ct. tell them ferrara sent you

  • I have to run these old p.o.s.s here in nevada TOO.Picking a cam off the wall is an all to common practice.Here is hoping your belt stays on!

  • It's a Square Base, or a Push Button depending on who you ask. There are no belts. Everything is chain driven. This machine here is probably one of the last Square Base #2's Brown and Sharpe made before they switched to the Ultramatic Design.

  • 4 #2 Square base find to many of them. That job belongs on a #00 though. I'd use oil as a coolant, water soluable coolants will rust the hell out of the machine. Replacing the spindle bearings is not fun.

    You must not have used the right coolant. I've been in the screw machine biz since

    1973 and have never worked with oil.  I've used coolant on 12 Greenly 6 spindles

    machines and the B&S I have owned since 1982. The B&S has not seen oil in all that time.

    I think I have had the spindle out once in all that time. It isn't hard to get the spindle.

    Yes, there is a lot of waste in that cycle. But for only 2500 pcs I just picked a cam off the wall. That works.

  • Hi No it is cam controlled. this type of screw machine were invented in 1876 their are multi spindle screw machines as-well with the fastest cycle time of 70 parts per minute.

    With more common cycles of 4-8 sceonds

  • This machine is single spindle.

  • Sorry- misread your post. You obviously know it's single spindle.

    CNC's are great for so much- but when you've gotta put out a lot of less complex parts, they can't touch these old Screw Machines. And with attachments and spindle brake, cross drilling, slitting, etc. add more capability.
