PS3 BluRay Drive Noise

I just got a 320gb ps3 with uncharted 3.

It is silent when I am not playing a disc in it.

As soon as I play a game it makes noise that is annoying at first but I am starting to get use it to it. It gets hot also if lay it down flat. So what I did was buy some cusion pads for $5 to give it better airflow and it works great now with no heating issues.

My slim also makes noise from time to time, really loud.

But it's usually before i start a game, i rarely notice it while playing a disc based game

My old fat one never made a sound but it died a year ago

sounds like you never followed the instruction manual and vacuum your ps3 vents monthly. theres a build up around center notch. read the manual bud

My PS3 makes the same noise now, only if a disc is in there. Really sucks while playing. Anybody know a solution?

i got the same thing, i took it apart to change the laser and now it sounds like a bearing in the motor but when i spun it by hand with the case of the noise seemed to correspond with the graphics on the disk like something is brushing against the top of the disk, when its on its side it goes away, gotta be somthing brushing on it that moves away when tilted!

mine does it too-not as loud though, strangely it stops when i put it in a vertical position, but i cant have it that way, games and everything load ok. I have heard anything from rubber in the ps3 getting old to the disk being incorrectly balanced

My PS3 Slim has been making that noise too! Only two times though, once while installing Bayonetta, and when I put in my Rush Hour 3 it makes that noise in the menu, but that's it.

Sounds like a grass strimmer.... Scary. Mine is messing up too (Slim 250GB) it makes disc search squeaks constantly when playing MW2 but is completely silent on every other game!

@0incorporeal because MW2 isn't so well made, whether the disc or the game content,will you see a console game lag when you use thermal scope to see through smoke?

Mine has  more of a clipping sound nears the right hand side, only seems to happen after an hour or so, I can lift it and it stops, when I place it down again it starts again, if I lay it down gently it usually stops...

i have something similar. same sound but more random at less noisy. but when playing tekken 6 its getting worse. should i replace my ps3?

Try a different disk, mine did the same, i took it all apart, still made the noise even without any covers on. Turns out some of the disks just are not weighted correctly.

Seems the Blu-Ray drive is knackered but luckily didn't damage the discs.

my drive is fucked i think. i went on holiday for 2 weeks and unplugged everything n when i got back i plugged all my stuff in and that night watched a dvd and on load up of the dvd was vibratin like crazy n really loud n a scraping noise. i took the disk out and it was fine so i put it back in and it was doing it again it played ok but i had to turn the tv up it was that loud. its done it ever since. if its still within a year ive had it im sending the shit box back. its 1 thing after another
