  • love this performance ....

  • No, the Mennonites had no musical instruments because they were peasants and farmers who could not afford such. During the 16th-18th Centuries, the proper church musical instrument would be the organ, which were rather large for small chapels, and pianos/harpsichords were toys for the rich. Other instruments didn't exist.

    Cheers

  • That's what I'm talking about!

  • The audience (mennonites) know how to sing this so well because it has basically been drilled into us since we were small children. I am 17 years old and know all four parts of many hymns, just from singing so often in church. It's just something we do.

  • @inDaltonHD At a point in your life it will no longer be something you do it will be something you treasure and cling to. Learning this song, as you did, will turn into one of the greatest blessings in you life.

  • this is absolutely amazing!

  • WOW !! powerful is the chorale indeed!

  • Beautiful.

  • Wow....this is absolutely amazing. I get chills listening to an audience sing this well.

  • Good comment "gondolacrescent5". Many large comgregations in the south sound like that. And the comment is true. "Bad men don't sing". Good men have refined voices! This remdition is A1!! Thanks Brooks.

  • Thank you for posting this. I really love the a cappella version of this song the best

  • How on earth did an audience sing like that ? They sound as if they'd been recruited and trained to sing that hymn and yet--I'm led to believe they're just regular folk. But regular folk, now a days, don't sing and if they do, they sing badly. There's an old saying and I think it's true: "bad men don't sing". I suspect the audience is composed largely of unusually good people. The choir was excellent as well, but I'm absolutely mystified and gripped by the audience. Thank you for posting this.

  • I apologize for commenting on my own post but I couldn't help but think that perhaps an interesting name for a male vocal group might not be: "Bad men don't sing".

I'd be afraid the name might evolve into fulfilled prophecy :-)

  • It's Goshen College, run by the Mennonites, who have a rich tradition of a cappella part-singing because instruments were banned in their church.

  • @gondolacrescent5 This audience was from Goshen College... they're Mennonites. Because they don't believe in having instruments in church services, they have grown up singing beautiful four-part harmony. If there's anything a Mennonite church takes pride in, it's singing.

  • I'm always amazed at the talent that Gosh College shows. It amazes me even further to hear the audience singing in perfect harmony... and staying in tune!

    Congrats!

  • Not only does this make me miss Goshen College, but the true Mennonite Hymn-sings I loved as a child. Thank you for the tears of joy and the fabulous memories!!!

  • This is beautiful!
