I volunteer at free geek and I love it! It's a great thing to get involved with. They're non profit so the 'bottom line' isn't what it revolves around, unlike 99% of places nowadays. You can get a free education, a free computer and make friends! It's awesome.. the only down side for me is I'm 35 and a 14 year old is my boss.. lol
Free geek rocks! But hey, I have a suggestion.. Us common people are a bit dumb when it comes to linnux. Somebody ought to offer some kind of class something like, "leave behind the crutch of windows, and graduate to linnux" Because that's what I need!!!
@lauvamojada They have just that. If you earn one of their computers they give a free class on using Linux. It's called "Linux for Windows Converts". Linux is amazing, but I still need to use Windows for development purposes.
This really is a wonderful place and the people are very understanding, and I really wish more groups like these were around....I wonder how Leo is doing,I hope all is well...
it makes me mad how if you have a computer and you go on it for just like 2 hours then your tagged a "nerd", but then super popular kids get on myspace on theyr computrs for hours on end but are not nerds, im a little confused here post if you have an answer
Oso Martin should really be a candidate for the Volvo for life environmental award instead of Lorraine Kenwood of Nexstep. Freegeek promotes Linux and open source software. Nextstep doesn't do much of any of that.
Just donated a bunch of stuff to the Chicagoland location. What a great setup. If you've got old gear, don't have a car and want to donate shoot me an email.
I worked with freegeek for about a week, but then had to move. I advise anyone in the PDX area, to go and volunteer at freegeek, it was a great experience!
You have to read this!! you won't believe it!!! don't stop now!! make a wish - - - - - - - . . . . . Now that you have your wish it will happen! in exclatly 4 days. just copy this and paste it to 4 videos!! only one wish use it wisely and it WILL HAPPEN!!! but if you break the chain your wish will be the opposite
If you live in Chicago; Vancouver, BC; Columbus, Ohio; the Michiana area (Michigan/Indiana- I'm guessing the Fort Wayne area) Fayetteville, Arkansas or Murfeesboro, Tennessee (just outside Nashville)- as well as the founding location, Portland, Oregon, you can find one. From the list I've looked at on the Free Geek website, it's starting to expand nationwide and even into Canada.
Our UNI runs a similar program. We get donated old boxes, strip em down, build new computers for students who can't afford it and ship the rest to Africa.
Free Geek rocks. I get tons of stuff there. It's awesome for building development servers at extremely low cost. All the windows throw-away components work just fine for what I need. I've built Windows and Linux servers with a mix of their equipment and mine for essentially nothing. It's also a convenient place to get rid of old CRTs.
Now I just need to find the time to volunteer there more often.
Sorry, I have a hard headed computer (what you get when you work with Windows...) Anyway, what I was about to say before this(demon-possessed XP) laptop went beserk on me was that I live here in the Portland/Vancouver area.
I would really like to have a Free Geek project here(in Holland) so that we could show people the power of open source and also computing as a whole. I'd surely be spending alot of my spare time volounteering there.
Free Geek is, as Dave said, "possibly the coolest place on the whole planet." This video really shows why! It reflects a lot of work, and is very well edited. Take a look!! -Pete F
The greatest showing of why people choose linux, open source, and the community aspect of using free software. Free in both senses of the word - pricewise and codewise. I praise everything that is going on with freegeek and hope that they can continue their project to educate the public about computers.
