I just realized that when Mameha said "I see water in you... Water is powerful. It can wash away earth, put out fire, and even destroy iron," it was foreshadowing the rest of the movie. Pumpkin is earth, Hatsumomo is fire, and I think Nobu is iron.
I thought that Mother was way uglier than that. XD I was expecting a sort of a monster or defigured woman. Can't wait to see Nobu-san... if he's here.
@FlapJack211 They literally put charcoal on their teeth to make their teeth 'blend in' to their mouth so you couldn't notice them that much. However, as I've been reading about them, they only really did this during the most important part of their career - when they're meiko.
@TheeAwesomeeAussiee3 It's not out of order. Make sure you're watching the ones from "ronniemonnie" for the right order. And if you can't find parts, maybe they have been banned in your country.
the only problem i have with Mameha in this movie (and trust me, I LOVE everything else about her in this movie, they chose the BEST actress for the role) is that she doesn't wear elaborate kimono and she doesnt have very intricate hairstyles. I know she's older than an apprentice, but she's still the same age as Hatsumomo, who wears make-up and pretty kimono.
@Harusha12 well, maybe dats because of their characters. Mameha accepts her status, age, etc with grace and elegance whereas Hatsumomo is desperately clinging on to her past, so she (Hatsumomo) still wears the elaborate attire like a younger geisha.
Hatsumomo wears elaborate attire because she doesn't like to show her age. She is desperate in wanting to hold on to her youthful appearance and is afraid that wearing mature geiko attire even if it's elegant would reveal that she's getting old. Whereas, Mameha accepts her age and staus with grace. Even that shows how elegant and mature she is.
@ladyfire44 of course...for the story...but Gong Li looks younger than she really is and she is so pretty and in real life she looks a lot younger than the actress who plays Mameha.
Hatsumomo is crueler and more frightening when she is described in the book. It feels like the movie has made many of the characters seem much nicer. Especially Mother and Grandmother who don't show as often.
@iiChocolatee Actually, in my opinion, Mameha is very beautiful for her age. I don't remember it being stated in the book that she was supposed to be young, so I think she's very pretty. But that's just my opinion :)
waw the yreally rushed the stuff in the movie =s Mameha walking Chiyo and making her known, and then her dancing, and at about 45% of the book, meeting the Baron... It's all so rushed! Still a great movie though =) MUST HAVE on dvd xD
Geisha's are like modern-day celebrities and performers.
Most of them get lots of money, they perform plays and musical numbers, they're highly educated, and are looked up to in society... they are not all prostitutes. That's just a stereotype!
@lovemykaila like a personality trait such, water meaning open minded free spirit gentle like . where satsu was described as wood. mean, cold, hard to get through to
Geisha were not prostitues people. 'Gei' means art and 'sha' means person. They are literally artists. Geisha practised the art of dance, and became experts of shamisen (Japanese guitar) and tsutsumi (Japanese drum). They entertained wealthy men with these skills. Sex was usually preserved for a Geisha's danna, who was their patron. He paid for his Geisha's living expenses. Geisha did not sell their bodies, they sold their talents to entertain powerful men.
@Disneyballerina Geisha were well known for the art of dance and classical music. Sex was a bonus for their danna (a man who sponsors the Geisha and pays for her expenses) or for incredibly wealthy, powerful men. Sex was not a huge focus for Geisha, instead they focused on dance and music. Gei means art, sha means person. They are literally artists.
@MyPaperBleedsInk Women were supposed to be demure and never suggestive. In that kind of society, however, a Geisha was allowed to be suggestive, or else a woman would be reprimanded for displaying her wrist. In a world that isn't unlike the restrictions Muslim women have places on them with the revelation of flesh and body parts (which is why the women wear several layers, and the kimono reaches from neck to toes), seeing a naked wrist was like showing your ankles in the 1700's here in the US.
@banzai23Q by what i have observed is that koreans have slightly broader facial features then the rest of them
i dont if i am right. but only Asians can know well
just like we south asians can differentiate between ourselves but others find it hard to. and just like it difficult to differentiate between westeners etc
@aemensabber actually, speaking of south asians. idk if it applies to other asians, but it's VERY easy to identify Filipinoes. Idk if other asians can distinguish that too, but imo, I think Filipinoes are the only asians easy enough to distinguish.
It happens... I do not judge people (and Chiyo deserved to be happy with someone who really loved her and someone she loved too). Love is love as they say.
@shootinggreenstars3 ok lol so im not crazy i knew the bet was different i have both books the movie one and the origianl and the bet was different than the movie

Elegant, graceful, talented, and resigned to her fate in life, yes. But silly, definitely not. I love the subtle back and forth conversation between Mother and Mameha. The way they pass the tea cup back and forth calls to mind a tennis match or something. I love it!
by saying "she has water in her." mameha is referring to a japanese sort of description of spirit. earch, fire, water...it's roughly like zodiac signs for americans. chiyo has water, and it shows in her eyes.
Actually it refers to Astrology. Where the element water would refer to a certain year and celestial position that Chiyo was born under. Water would mean a personality where she is flexible and meanders through the other elements to reach a goal.
Does anyone else think that this movie has one of the most beautiful cast ever? I mean...seriously, Chiyo, Hatsumomo, and Mameha are soo crazy pretty!
@orgoik That's exactly what I was thinking. This movie unites all the beautiful Asian women in one, just Katie Leung, Fann Wong and Alice Zhang Hung are missing^^
@orgoik They had to be beautiful to fit the role. But yes I agree. In the book Chiyo described Mameha and Hatsumomo as the most beautiful women she had ever seen.
Mameha's voice is so beautiful!

@cherbear1001
