Same concept with statues, etc. - they remind us of Jesus, the examples that the saints gave us in their own lives, and so help people to remember to pray and live their own lives in accordance with the teachings of Christ.

Rommel and Hitler weren't close enough for Hitler to have told him that he wasn't a Christian. Had they been that close Hitler would have probably never ordered the execution of his best field marshall. Rommel was opposed to the assasination attempt and he wasn't involved.

The concordat was about ensuring that the Catholic church didn't oppose Nazism, but the Latern treaty between the Fascists and the Catholic church was much more than that, the Vatican became a sovereign state and Catholicism was officially proclaimed the official religion of Italy.
