By the mid 80's Russia may have been producing extremely powerful war machines. But they couldnt even produce toilet paper.

@miraxell Take it easy? I'm not exactly freaking out here. Im from Sweden and I've traveled all over northern europe (This includes Russia :P) and I have not witnessed any corruption whatsoever; it is a country with a complicated past but the corruption of the soviet union is dead and gone.

I lived there for almost 2 years during an internship and I didn't experience any corruption whatsoever, the government is forceful but relatively transparent and every law I've seen them pass is fair in my eyes. Economic growth is measured in GDP, or gross domestic product, which is the amount of money that comes into the country each year. America's is hardly increasing at all, but Russia's is increasing at eight times the speed of America's (Mostly because they are smart enough to actually produce stuff and not just borrow money from other countries.

@Ouija121085 By the time Gorbachev even came into power around 1985 the Soviet Union was broke as fuck. Brezhnev put all money into the military to keep up with the Space Race and the Afghan war. By the mid 80's Russia may have been producing extremely powerful war machines. But they couldnt even produce toilet paper.
Theres no way the USSR could have limped on into the 90's unless another Stalin like 5 year plan happened and would kill millions. I think what happened was probably the best.

@mikhailr13 The USSR could have survived, it would have been a reformed version, Moscow wouldn't have control over the rest of the republics.The Baltic states would have left the union regardless, it would have had to be a union of independent states with a united military and foreign policy that's it. The coup/Yeltsin destroying the country was the final in nail the coffin.
