Hahaha, oh yeah, I can REALLY see where they got the inspiration for Animaniacs Slappy Squirrel, only she seems sensible compared to Screwy, he makes JOKER look sane. =D
Gotta love the self awareness too, like how Screwy asks the lead what kind of cartoon this is going to be, and the mindless violence of him dispatching said lead.
All that aside, something about Screwy bugs me, probably his having bare lips while having furry cheeks, it just looks wrong somehow.
The cutesy squirrel was meant to be a Disney-style character. MGM had their squirrel dispose of him so that some real fun could take place.
One of the Rocky and Bullwinkle cartoons featured a prince who looked like Walt Disney and charged big bucks for people to tour his castle. (How true.)
@SSArcher11 I don't know if he was refering to Disney. Disney had a few silly synphonies that were cute but I think they were really reffring to MGM cartoons directed by Rudolf Isling.
What a crime that MGM never did anymore Screwball Squirrel cartoons, he would have given those Warner Bros. cartoons a run for their money. Long Live Screwball Squirrel!!
@TimelordR I think a problem with him was he was too jerkass, he's hilarious, but you'd hate him if you knew him in real life. Most jerkass characters have some redeeming personality, Screwball is just chaos/malice incarnate. :D
It's amazing, this cartoon is like 50-60 years old and its still funny to this day. Cartoons of today just plain suck shit. (Excluding; The Simpsons, South Park and King of the Hill)
@TKGB2006 I don't know. The writting for the Simpsons seems to have strayed to a completely different direction for me to complete exaggeration. I prefer the old Simpsons. It didn't rely on such exaggerations to get a laugh.
Avery based a lot of his characters on radio characters. Egghead was from Joe Penner. Droopy Dog came from Bill Thompson's Wallace WImple character on the Fibber McGee & Molly program. Screwy Squirrel was voice by Wally Maher and comes from a character named Wilbur on the Tommy Riggs & Betty Lou program. Wilbur was Betty Lou's boyfriend. Thompson & Maher did the voices on the radio & the cartoons. Screwy Squirrel is my all-time favorite cartoon character. Love the music @ 4:19.
