  • it's a while since i've seen the film, but ISTR augie as much as saying that granny knew what was going on, but why spoil a good time? she knew her grandson was bad, but she always hoped for the best - and augie couldn't dash the old girl's hopes, he played along with the 'ideal' story just to make her happy. augie took a camera from a stack and started his project

  • im not so much into drama in general but thise scene and he scene before it when he was telling the story to the writer are realy memorable scenes

  • RIP Clarice Taylor.

  • thank you--

one of the greatest songs and one of the greatest movie scenes --ever!!!!!!!!!!!!

thank you, thank you, thank you..

ive seen the movie many times--beautiful film

    -louis

  • This movie is CLASS.

  • Once in a VERY long time a movie like 'Smoke' comes along. Then, even less frequently, luminary actors and actresses elevate it to this level of art.

Stockard Channing, William Hurt, Harvey Keitel, Forest Whitaker.

It is so pointedly human as to make one stand back and really think very hard about many things we take for granted. A rare film.

  • hi ! can someone please explain to me what this sequence is all about? thank you :D

  • @Popsalful It's very hard to explain, but the character Paul was writing Christmas stories,Auggie told him about going to see the shoplifters Grandmother on Christmas Day-This is where Auggie actually stole the camera that he uses for his daily photo project up to the present day in the story...I don't know if this really helps, but there it is!

    Best to you.

  • @Guitfiddlejase Yeah it helps ;D Thank you very much !

  • Movie "SMOKE" is love.

    Great actors and story.

Especially the last scene and music is great.

    Thanks for the excitement.

    From Japan.

  • I miss my grandfather. But he used to say that, if after death he should get the opportunity to live again, this time he'd moved from Italy to America to become an actor, and I wanna perform too, and sometimes i feel like he was helping me and giving me advices about how to be a good artist.

  • Amazing movie.

  • Simple, gentle, leisurely, quiet...wonderful movie ! :)

Harvey Keitel amazing, I love him :)

  • The movie is good, but this part of the novie is the best!

  • Paul Auster + Tom Waits = awesome.

  • Tears in my eyes..

This song makes me remember the finiteness of the life.

    Let's enjoy our life.TODAY! NOW!

  • THE Movie.

  • Brilliant, brilliant movie. Never been much of a Harvey Keitel fan, but he is breathtaking in this movie. William Hurt fantastic as well. That shot of him pulling apart that bird for dinner with the Grandmother..just beautiful. Tom Waites in the background......they don't make them like this anymore.

  • he was lonely on Xmas Eve; so was she. They had each other, even if it was a Big Lie. What's the difference. A wonderful human story.

  • This is a brilliant scene and song. Makes me cry everytime I watch the movie...

  • Yeah, agreed, the end of this movie was great. The actors sitting and telling stories and listening to each other. Moments like that. I'm sure they go unnoticed for the most part, but they can make a movie, if done well. The brilliance of ordinary behavior.

  • I think this is one of the best movie finals ever, so touching, so well made, Tom Waits is perfect for this one. The story is incredible

  • the movie is beautiful!

The song too and likes Portuguese song (It's dramatic)

  • paul auster is a fuck writer!

  • Meeting of giants (Auster, Wang, Keitel, Waits) - in a pill ;)

  • I know this sounds like B.S., but as a phone man in Gary, IN I experienced something close to this, only no chicken or a stolen camera.

  • @VanGoghsEar1890 I believe it!

  • This Movie and script is one of the reasons life is beautiful .

  • i love how the grandma hugs harvey and you can see the exact point when she feels she's hugging a stranger and not her grandson, goes to show how lonely it is when your old, you will let a stranger into your house just for company...very sad, but has a good message if you watch the whole movie

  • I loved the film, the message and I have all of Tom Waits music. This always has an impact be it Christmas or not. Thank you to shre it.

  • It's Harvey Keitel!

  • Brilliant film!

  • it's one of the best movies ever

  • "and it's memories that i'm stealing"

He stole a camera! Never noticed that before!

  • Hallar una antítesis dentro del Imperio me deja apoyarme y continuar dentro de esta singular anticultura. ¿Dónde he estado en estos treinta años? Debe existir una sola América, sin amos.

  • The movie,"Smoke,"written by author Paul Austere wasn't great, but the last scene with Harvey Keitel and this song playing, had tears welling in my eyes.

  • This film is an absolute treasure. Such a gem.

  • One of the greatest films I've ever seen.

And Waits song was the perfect ending.

  • Anybody have the clip of Keitel/Augie telling the story before this Wonderful depiction of the same story? It really adds to the richness of the story. And, yes, I cry in the middle of this every damn time. Beautiful.

  • same happened to me just in the middle of the story!!!

  • does anybody else agree that this is a very underrated movie?

  • I agree

  • So do I

  • so do i

  • I always cry at this scene. these are 2 strangers who just don't want to be alone on Xmas Eve. It's not just a New York story, but a people story.

  • Ehem. :D Crec que la tinc en algun calaix. T'he afegit una resposta en video, que encara que no ho sembli, té a veure amb aquesta història. Es nadalenc també i... si el mires sencer ho veuràs, la veritat es que ens va inspirar aquesta peli.

  • Ouch... Many memories come to my head. I have to see the movie again :p

  • Love the movie and love the song even more.

  • these kind of films are infinitely better than the patronising, formulaic, in-your-face, hollywood movies that we are constantly bombarbed with. indie films are so much more touching!

  • Genial.

  • Man this is hell of a movie!...Ilove this kind of movies, not much money in it, good acting...simple history...really....touching, great movi

  • One of the best American films ever made, no lie.

  • James, I couldn't agree more. I am like Johnny Appleseed trying to spread the word on this film, must've told 1000 people about it no lie.

No to be too overwrought about it but there's enough spirituality and soul in this movie to keep one coming back time and time again.

Maybe I'm just still jazzed after seeing Mr Waits perform it in St Louis a few days ago.

  • Its after Xmas now, but thank you! Beautiful.

  • best movie scene, best music ever! love it

  • For my dear Mother Mary: God Bless you for your blind love of all your 6 children and the sacriface you made in carrying 9 babies. I pray that I have enough of your "Black Irish" blood to show you the love and kindness so wonderfully offered in this gem of a film. Sadly, I do not know if I have ever told you "I love you mom": I don't know I could say without choking on my own tears. Well I love you mom even if I have taken the cowardly path to express it. May your Christmas be everyday!

  • This is how we should all live...yes it is, with compassion and love for everything that dies! Ah stop, I always comment when drunk - but I'm right, yes?

  • Very right, my friend.

  • one of my favorite movies, one of my favorite songs

  • thank you for uploading this! just great!!! love the movie, love the ending!

  • beautiful ending of very good movie :)

  • A beautiful song paired with a beautiful story. I can never get through it without getting teary-eyed. Thank you so much for the post!

  • i believe the correct title of the song is "innocent when you dream" a wonderful tune and a great film!

  • yes, i made a mistake when i upload the video, sorry :S

  • went looking for this clip cause of the holidays, glad I found it.

  • I had forgotten about Smoke, but had the opportunity to use Blue In The Face in a summer high school English class I taught. Tough school, but the kids treated me with respect since I treated them as peers. They loved the film. I saw both films when I lived in Spain, where Auster has a huge following. I wish he would write some more for the screen.

  • Wonderful, wonderful movie. The perfect ending.
