it's a while since i've seen the film, but ISTR augie as much as saying that granny knew what was going on, but why spoil a good time? she knew her grandson was bad, but she always hoped for the best - and augie couldn't dash the old girl's hopes, he played along with the 'ideal' story just to make her happy. augie took a camera from a stack and started his project
@Popsalful It's very hard to explain, but the character Paul was writing Christmas stories,Auggie told him about going to see the shoplifters Grandmother on Christmas Day-This is where Auggie actually stole the camera that he uses for his daily photo project up to the present day in the story...I don't know if this really helps, but there it is!
I miss my grandfather. But he used to say that, if after death he should get the opportunity to live again, this time he'd moved from Italy to America to become an actor, and I wanna perform too, and sometimes i feel like he was helping me and giving me advices about how to be a good artist.
Brilliant, brilliant movie. Never been much of a Harvey Keitel fan, but he is breathtaking in this movie. William Hurt fantastic as well. That shot of him pulling apart that bird for dinner with the Grandmother..just beautiful. Tom Waites in the background......they don't make them like this anymore.
Yeah, agreed, the end of this movie was great. The actors sitting and telling stories and listening to each other. Moments like that. I'm sure they go unnoticed for the most part, but they can make a movie, if done well. The brilliance of ordinary behavior.
i love how the grandma hugs harvey and you can see the exact point when she feels she's hugging a stranger and not her grandson, goes to show how lonely it is when your old, you will let a stranger into your house just for company...very sad, but has a good message if you watch the whole movie
Hallar una antítesis dentro del Imperio me deja apoyarme y continuar dentro de esta singular anticultura. ¿Dónde he estado en estos treinta años? Debe existir una sola América, sin amos.
The movie,"Smoke,"written by author Paul Austere wasn't great, but the last scene with Harvey Keitel and this song playing, had tears welling in my eyes.
Thank you, this is my favorite film, and the best actor, harvey, every time i see this scene i have necesity of cry, the move is beauty, the scene is beauty, the history is beauty and the music is beauty, thank you very much really
@PaddyGB Yup, my grandmother died last week and you never really realize how much some people mean to you until they're not here anymore. Oh well. It's a beautiful song and rest in peace grandma. You meant a lot to me.
Anybody have the clip of Keitel/Augie telling the story before this Wonderful depiction of the same story? It really adds to the richness of the story. And, yes, I cry in the middle of this every damn time. Beautiful.
Ehem. :D Crec que la tinc en algun calaix. T'he afegit una resposta en video, que encara que no ho sembli, té a veure amb aquesta història. Es nadalenc també i... si el mires sencer ho veuràs, la veritat es que ens va inspirar aquesta peli.
these kind of films are infinitely better than the patronising, formulaic, in-your-face, hollywood movies that we are constantly bombarbed with. indie films are so much more touching!
For my dear Mother Mary: God Bless you for your blind love of all your 6 children and the sacriface you made in carrying 9 babies. I pray that I have enough of your "Black Irish" blood to show you the love and kindness so wonderfully offered in this gem of a film. Sadly, I do not know if I have ever told you "I love you mom": I don't know I could say without choking on my own tears. Well I love you mom even if I have taken the cowardly path to express it. May your Christmas be everyday!
This is how we should all live...yes it is, with compassion and love for everything that dies! Ah stop, I always comment when drunk - but I'm right, yes?

Once in a VERY long time a movie like 'Smoke' comes along. Then, even less frequently, luminary actors and actresses elevate it to this level of art.
Stockard Channing, William Hurt, Harvey Keitel, Forest Whitaker.
It is so pointedly human as to make one stand back and really think very hard about many things we take for granted. A rare film.

James, I couldn't agree more. I am like Johnny Appleseed trying to spread the word on this film, must've told 1000 people about it no lie.
No to be too overwrought about it but there's enough spirituality and soul in this movie to keep one coming back time and time again.
Maybe I'm just still jazzed after seeing Mr Waits perform it in St Louis a few days ago.
