It wasn't fan power that took the show of the air in 80's it was mostly down to Michael Grade's bizarre hatred of a national institution with his then other half's estranged husband in the lead. Coupled with JNT's decision to turn the show into a sort of pantomime. The BBC killed the show by starving it of funds, sticking it next to Coronation St and letting the producer focus less on compelling stories on a budget and more about playing up to it's perceived image as a silly dated kids show.
I agree that the criticism of Matt Smith and the yet to be broadcast series 5 is uncalled for. Though I am disappointed that no classic monsters will be returning
i really agree, i'm extremely excited to see matt smith as the new doctor. i've seen him in party animals and he's great. Karen is going to be great :)
I couldn't agree more. I'm 28 now and have always loved Who. RTD did well to bring it back - BUT - he has dropped the ball on too many issues for me --- ruined the Cybermen, brought in too much romance and has pushed Tennant's Doc in a direction which I have found annoying. I cannot wait for Matt Smith (who, for me, TOTALLY looks the part), the new production team... and the new era.... :-)
I didn't like David Tennant but that is probably because I don't like the new format compared to classic series. I'm so looking forward to Matt Smith and the new writing team with Steven Moffat. I agree with what you say.
It will be alright, I survived when Tom Baker left.LOL However does anyone else find it ironic that the 1st Doctor survived 900 yrs yet he's burned through 10 regenerations in less than 50 years of mucking about with earthers?!?
Thanks so much - I agree, i was mortified when Tom went (he was & still is MY Doctor) but it has carried on with each of them adding something to the mix. I guess we Earthlings are unlucky when it comes to Doctors:)
Branscombe is mostly correct - the bulk of negative feedback on series 5 thusfar is from those newbies that think DW is a "buffy the vampire slayer" type series with love, crushes, broken hearts, loneliness...bla bla bla you get my drift. They have no understanding of classic who, so Moffat's changes to them is like taking their beloved sexy David Tennant away - to REAL WHO fans, it is a welcome change because WE FINALLY GET TO SEE SOME DOCTOR WHO!!!
Thanks so much - I agree with a lot of what you say, I don't blame David Tennant at all for wanting to move on. I'm sure he will be successful in his future projects. Its just the Matt Smith hating, and some fans saying they won't watch anymore that worries me and all true Whovians:)
Hi, while I agree with everything you say, am I right in saying that a lot of the negative comments are being expressed by children/teenagers and really shouldn't be taken too seriously?
I have not seen any of the matt smith dr. who shows they are still showing the david tenant shows where I am and I think that they are quite good..I enjoy them much..and I totally agree with you about when watching a dr. and you get to like him and then another dr. comes along and he doesn't seem to fit in and you get mad until you get to know him and then bam you start to like him to also..yeah I have had that happen to me too......
Sigh, stubborn people. The only criticism I have is his outfit, that's it, because that's all I've seen!
You can't even really judge him without even seeing him! Give the man a damn chance.
Also, people know that I have stated that I liked what RTD did. I had no problems with Cybermen, Daleks, Sontarans, and the Rose stuff. However, I am still welcoming the "changing of the guards". I was scared when Eccleston left, but got a surprise with Tennant. I'm am eager to see how he does.
Thanks so much - Its a lot of new series fans really, they don't understand the concept of renewal & change. David has been a massive hit but don't hate the show because David wants to move on:)
I'll make this plain now, i hat the tenth doctor always have. I've loved the stories and thought the acting brilliant but David's Doctor was and is wrong to me. He's like a better looking luckier version of me in a position I am most jealous of, plus he took over from ecclestone and was too young and normal to play a 900+ year old. Despite that I loved the show and loved tennant's regen scene in Harry Potter. Hopefully Smith haters will be as discreet as me.
While it is true that I wish that David had stayted for the first season of Moffatt, that is in no way Matt's fault. And I'm not worried about Matt's performance. I *am* worried about some of the things Moffatt will do around him (*cough* River Song *cough*), but I wont hold those things against Matt any more than I held RTD's banality against David.
As for Karen, maybe when new school fans compain about her being pretty, what they really mean is "prettier than Billie Piper." Too bad.
Regeneration is was makes the show great. I am watching the Invasion and love it but equally love all the others. Everyone has a different favourite this is what makes the show great and for so many people.
I apologize in advance for getting on my soapbox. Concerning the new companion being "too pretty" - absolute nonsense. In my opinion, she bares a resemblance to Victoria Watfield from the Second Doctor's era. In any case, it shouldn't matter as long as she can act. As far as the transition, I think Eccleston said it best during his regeneration: "It's a bit dodgy this process." Transitions always are difficult, but to crucify Smith before he even starts is just cruel. Great vid, Sparky!
Thanks Misti - Insight is a great thing, some Whovian friends of mine criticized David when they first found out he would be The Doctor. Minutes after his first appearance, they rang me praising him to the skies.
I think Matt will be a smash & Karen is very Victoria like (wow, i have just noticed that), an innocent in space. Looking forward to the new series:)
Great video

Here, Here. Give Matt Smith a chance. People didn't like the idea of David Tennant at one point, how wrong they were.
These people that are slagging Matt Smith off before he starts are just like those who complained about the theme tune for Star Trek Enterprise.
