It's actually very interesting to see The Great Gonzo grow as an artist. I mean, at first he was just a huge downer. Now, he's experimenting with animals and courageously asking cows on dates.
I'm always amazed at the talented celebrities that guest starred on this show. You'd think that they would scoff at working with puppets. Of course, we know that the Muppet Show was much much more than a puppet show.
@mohinderbauer They did, actually. The guest stars of the first season and a good chunk of the second showed up because the show's writers called in favors and had friends in the business. That changed when Rudolf Nureyev appeared, and the immense positive publicity the show gained as a result was what led to the show being able to have so many high-profile guest stars.
What is this song? It sounds like a gypsy/Hungarian ballad, but the music performed on this show is often based on a classical work. Knowing the original work makes the parody even funnier. I don't know this one.
Clouseau, Groucho Marx, Queen Victoria, Richard III, and the combination of the voices of Hercules Grytpype Thynne and Major Bloodnok through that part where he mentions he had the him surgically removed.
I've been a huge Peter Sellers fan ever since I saw him in Dr. Strangelove (Which s now one of my favorite movies). His ability to just completely become different people is amazing.
I've seen interviews where he shows up as himself, and the way he talks and tells stories, I think I understand why the Muppets decided not to let the real Peter Sellers show up. He was a tragic figure when he wasn't being another person. He said something like: "Before and after, it is pointless and depressing, but when you're out there, when you're doing it, that's when everything is perfect."
Chiscringle thiers a story about that when Peter was ask to do the show and agree to do it in half through the show kermit interviews the guest stars but Peter said to the makers of the muppet show you can do whatever you want with me but not be myself I but can't renamber what happened next but he can be the old queen of England Queen Vicktoriea.
@collgoff Brian Henson did a presentation during the Time/Life series "Best of the Muppet Show" that described that interview. Turns out that entire interview was the inspiration for this episode.
I know...I wasn't too thrilled with Roberto Benigni in "Son of Pink Panther" and I'm not sure if I want to watch the ones with fellow season 2 guest Steve Martin.
Sellers didn't have himself surgically removed, he was basically a sh*t (see the book The Life and Death of Peter Sellers). His redeeming factor was that he was a fricking genius and the human race would be poorer without him!!
Unfortunately, Sellers did seriously have a problem telling himself from his characters, which is why he never appears as himself in this episode: he pretty much forgot how to be himself.

I like Season 2 the best. That when "The Muppet Show," was really peaking in popularity. What do you guys think?

OK, Shakespeare quotations in the chicken act. Now I understand the reference to "something rotten" in the gypsy act.

That sounds like one of Gonzo's acts!

I put that comment down before the clip was done-I missed the part where:
Kermit: We can't do that on the show.
Peter Sellers: Why not?
Kermit: Because Gonzo did that last week.
