The track and trains are the easy part. It's the details, and scenery that are time consuming, but in the end very rewarding. I like your attitude! Trains r more important than the walls!! The Walls are the easy part!
very nice. just one addition 4 ur locomotives...u should try to add oscillating ditch lights. i have a bnsf dash 9 myself with soundtraxx sound and dcc with oscillating ditch lights and it looks amazing and i will try to get a video of it on youtube but i've been waitin to get my almost 70 car coal train up and running. dash 9 and 3 sd 70macs for power. again very nice job.
@TheDodgeMan2001 I have many now, thank you. Keep in mind this video was my first, years ago. Many of the locos you see in this vid are no longer mine. I have moved to more advanced and detailed units now with oscillating ditch lights. All of my MTH units have them as well as a few others that I have. Thanks for the comments!
here is an idea that i think you'll like, you see where your mountain is? add some sort of a staging area and have your east and westbounds hide in that are while you let other trains proceed, and in fact it will look like the are on destination to chicago etc. take care and have fun, let us know your updates, thanks skull.
@donsgotmoney Well, it's not a large of a layout as I'd like it to be but you do what you can. If I made it any bigger my wife would have killed me! HA!
@jelchet69 13'x18'. Thanks! Glad you like it. You can build a decent layout on a 4'x8' platform. There are lots of layout plans for that size available.
This is a nice layout, I can't wait to get my layout finished. I posted a video called - 8x4 Ho Scale Train Layout - if anyone would like to check it out. I started the project with my 4 year old son March 2010 and hope by March of 2012 to have all the bells and whistles working.
@mightydesign Thanks man! I haven't spent ANY time on it lately. I've been messing around with other projects. But that's the great thing about model railroading, you can work on it any time you want! I'll check yours out.
@vidfreak727 I've collected them over time from hobby shops online or ebay. I've sold a couple of these in this video to help pay for other locos and such. But most of these I still have.
Its awesome dude! I wish I had the money and space for stuff like that. I still have some small amount of trains laying around my brother's garage, but I think I will just end up using a few of them and just buy a new set from Life-like trains. I like the track lock system they have cuz I hate dealing with rail joiners.
Looking great, I've been into HO myself about a year and a half and you've got more done that me! lol,,My job takes up alot of my time not to mention the marriage thingy but one day i'll have something happening. Thanks for posting your video, gave me a little inpiration to get some scenery done and stop playing with new MTH engines! lol....Keep up the great work!
@RailFanRick Haha! Thanks mans! I hear ya on not having alot of free time. Throw in 2 kids and it gets even more interesting!! Be sure to check out some of my other vids for updates. There is alot more done to the layout than in this video. Thanks again!
@Silver1Sprg Yes indeed it is, my first real SERIOUS layout. I played around with HO scale trains when I was younger but nothing to this level. Thanks!
@Silver1Sprg Well, great job. I've built many layouts, both N & HO, and it took me a while to get up with detail like you have in your first layout. I'm impressed. FYI - check out my monthly updates on new items in both HO, N Scale and other stuff that is released monthly on my train videos. I eventually will be putting out "how to" dvd's for those who are interested. Just click on my name and see the train stuff IF your interested. Otherwise, great job and keep up the great work.
@Silver1Sprg Thanks very much for the compliment! I'm always trying to make it look as realistic as possible. I used to be quite the artist when I was younger, perhaps those skills have attributed to the detailing I try to achieve. I'll be checking out your vids, thanks!
@lukethecuke Depends on how big you want to go and what brands of locos and rolling stock you want to put on the layout and purchase. Same goes with the detailing. You can keep it pretty cheap or really expensive depending on your budget. Some guys make alot of the scenery from stuff they find laying around outside or in there homes.
@Zebinator cheap? to run 100 feet its alest 700$ and the trains are like 300$ and 50$ per car. unless you shit gold, or make 200k+ a year. model trains are out of the question.
@MrkmTrainFAN Thanks! The reason for no new videos lately is because I have been too busy. I don't work on my layout much during the summer months and working full time, raising 2 kids and preping for winter among a few other things keeps me busy. BUT I will be doing a new video soon on what I've done before I got busy and what I plan to do as well.
@Zebinator ooops my bad. i wanted to apologize about my comment in my other account "darfdm" just realized it was a little immature. nice train layout.
@18cowsmooing Well the BNSF(on the left) I got off of ebay. It's a lightly weathered Kato AC4400. The UP next to it is a Tower 55 ES44AC. Got that off of ebay too. They run very nice too!
really nice layout, im thinking of makind a layout on the wall though because you get more track length out of a layout than on a large table. it also takes up less space in the area your doing it in.
@MrWarfreak7 Hell no!! This was only my FIRST VIDEO. There are others and it's still not done. The thing with model railroading is, is that it takes a while to complete. Some people are always working on their layouts.
Awesome layout. Hey, on your bnsf train, what kind of locomotave was the 4th locomotave and who makes it? Im just trying to get a better idea of some different locomotaves types.
Your work is really great, I love the river, very nicely done., but don;t worry about ever getting a layout finnished, nobody ever truely finnishes a layout.....
@mdurdan Believe it or not, it's ceiling tiles. I cut them to the depth/size I wanted and then stacked them up glueing them together. Then after the glue was dried, I used a metal ruler to shape the ravines that you see there and after that I used a wire brush along the entire surface to give it that look of rock falling away over the years. After shaping proceed with painting and detailing. Pretty easy and fun to do.
YOU HAVE AN AMAZING SET UP THERE!! I wish it were my layout! Im in the making of building a 10 by 5 layout with digitrax! its going to be off the hook!!!!!!! keep making the awesome videos
Very nice. No need for any of the comments acknowledging what's still left to do - it's a work in progress and that's part of the fun! This layout is especially interesting to me as I anticipate creating a layout of about this scale. Also interesting reading comments and responses on DCC as I have just come back to the hobby and am amazed with how much it has changed (the controllability, sound, other features, also range of products and detail - and cost!).
Hi man! Not necessarily, some come with DCC and Sound. Some with just DCC. If it is the latter of the 2 then you may be able to install a sound decoder. It's not to difficult to do although working with small wires, pliers/tweezers, or a soldering iron is a plus. You can check out many different companies and go with the best for your model. I use Digitrax, they are pretty stable and fairly easty to work with. Good luck!
I'm about 7 layouts old now. DPDT switches @ $4 ea.. then wire and solder each of them, OR a rotary for 2+cabs. Also, you don't a huge bundle of wiring back from blocks to panels.. Just a main bus and block feeders.I plugged in my reverse loop module.Works. I put my turnout controls on site,so I have a seperate power bus for that . I will have dcc routing one day(now that costs..).But to kick off with? Initial outlay yeah..but in the long run, I feel it's the same $ but more benefits.
love it ! hey check mine out! im filming video now and editing. i have a video up but its old. i built more on my layout. the first part was an 8x10 and we added another 6x8 onto it to make it a gian L its really cool check my "Trainz Trailer" out to see it!
Zebinator, I agree what you have done so far does look "pretty darn nice!" Even though it is what is known as a "continuous loop design," I like how you offset the "continuous loop-look" with ample, varied scenery that serve as view blocks.
Thank you! It's my first real attempt yes. I built a 4x9 one 24 years ago which wasn't much to look at but it was a start. Now that I have kids that are interested it's re-ignited my interest in model railroading and railfanning in general.
Yo I LOVE your backdrop!! Your layout is a piece of shit dawg!! LOL Yo I am just fucking wit you. I really do like your layout. Your doing a good job. The only advice I HAVE to give you is that you need to buy BLACK & WHITE ACRYLIC paint for 54 cents at Walmart. Then mix in some black into the white bottle to get a medium color gray. THEN REPAINT the roads you have. That will give you a realistic perfect look you may be seeking. Otherwise I am impressed! Good job ZEB!
HA! Thanks bud! I'll take your advice and modify my roads sometime this week or next. After that I'll do an update vid. I've gotten a few more things done since this.
Zeb, Love the layout, keep up the good work dude. like you said LOTS of room for landscape! im fixing to start working on a new layout and looking for ideas. i like how your layout isnt 95% track!! a lot of people overcrowd..this is looking just right! 5 stars!
