Depends how you define "warrior class". If you consider today´s salarimen samurias, then maybe you have a point. But come on... this is getting silly.
This very good. Just like learning to walk. One needs to know how to fall with out getting one self hurt. This is very important. This is very well shown.
I don't know what planet you're from, but on my planet Earth you can't have one without the other. Learning to defend poor attacks results in poor defense. Also when was the last time you saw someone walking around in Samurai armor?
Of course Aikido is a practical martial art. One reason the attacks look so awful is that attacking is 0% of the aikido regimen - it is entirely a defensive art. Good aikidoka don't depend on a good attack to be effective. Additionally, Aikido has roots back to the unarmed Samurai. Kicks and punches are not as effective against an armored opponent, so the attacks are more full-bodied than light and quick strikes.
Would be nice if Aikidoka would practice with attacks people actually use. Not particularly effective to train against folks who stick their over extended hand out into space.
Dear jgessner67, please be aware, that Aikido is not just another Martial Art beside others, but an abstract form of dealing with yourself and others on peaceful bases. It is not intended to be "effective" or to be used as self-defence. It's a path, a way of life!
I've studied it enough to know I don't like mysticism hidden in a pseudo martial art. Of all the Aikidoka I've spoken to you're the first admit it's not a viable form of self-defense. Is it popular im Deutschland?
Oh yes, very popular! After France, witch is the "european-Aikido-country-number-1" Germany has lots of Aikido-practitioners. In fact my school follows the teachings of Christian Tissier Shihan, 7th dan, from France. He's a former student of the late S. Yamaguchi who died in the 80ies. U can find lots of videos about him on youtube.
Oh, and about the effectiveness or usefulness of A. as self-defence: I only said and I quote "It is not intended to be 'effective' or to be used as self-defence." That does not mean that it may not be used as self-defence, but that it is not intended to be used as such. It is not its aim to make U invincible or strong against any form of attack, but to provide U the tools to deal with any circumstance of life. These of course can include forms of violent physical attacks.
. If you are free in mind and spirit, free of hate and bad feelings, free to move yourself without hesitating, than you will handle any form of attack without inflicting pain or hurting your opponent, but U will prevail as integer being and probably will make new friends instead of providing yourself dark foes filled with hatred and anger.
- Once - and I regret that such is the case - I had to use my aikido to solve some trouble. Do you want to know the specific technique I used to confront the aggressor?: I smiled at him and invited him to have a beer with me! So, I used Irimi-Tenkan to guide his energy and anger directly into the next Bar. - We still are in touch and use to talk about that day.
And what do you think he practises in his free-time? Oh yes: Aikido. So, dear jgessner67, if you wanted to state that aikido is not effective as self-defending-martial-art, I hope I could prove the opposite. Maybe this does not match the form of self-defence U meant, but it is very effective...I can tell!

Derukugi2 2 years ago
I,ve said nothing of the sort. in fact, this second sentence is from another reply i sent concerning Capoeira. I've been misquoted.

Well, it is hard to argue about that now, since you removed your message.
