@iainhead yeah i havent played this one. but enemy unknown i have completed the whole game without psyonics. yes it is hard. but now i have done that i can have fun using the psyonics this time around.
Aight, steam has this for $5, so I buy it remembering I enjoyed the game. I'm getting my ass handed to me by a game older than my computer ><
How the heck do ya play this now? I managed to get one play up to a point where I got plastic armor into production, and then sonar picks up about 10 alien craft, while I have only 1 base, barely any funding to bring up another, and my soldier get picked off worst than newbies in bf2!
of course it's boring. you have to be awesomely powerful and rich to get to this point of the game. it's the fear at the beginning and the first time you meet a lobsterman that is exciting!
Hmmm the end game cut-scenes seems to be missing . I remember when I beat it back then in Dos It had a longer end game cutscene showing T'leth explode and together wiht all aquanaughts or something like that.
The first game at least told you what happeneds, this one shows an explosion and an alien hand out of a manhole cover. Phail. And then ..bam.. right back at the main menu.. want to do it again?
I suppose its just that we all put so much into a game, and you get to the end, you hope for a little "happy ending", or something, but oh well, I guess its the satisfaction of getting the job done that gives the most return.
Mind control is pro, I love it. When you play like 3000 missions without it, then you get it (both first and second game) after having it used on you so much, is pro. Freaking great. Decent use of it btw, not too bad.
This is the soundtrack from the original UFO: Enemy Unknown (or X-Com: UFO Defense). No URL though, it's only some midi files. This particular track sounds different though. It's either a remix or the original midi file played back with an awesome wavetable synthesis. Can't remember if it sounded like this in the second game.
great game but i seem to be in some sort of a loop have researched everything but the game is not moving on armour upgrades not happening and cant find the city......why?
@imedi There are a few glitches to the game. You have to have all the components to research onto the next level of stuff. Its reallly picky about how that stuff works.
I beat the game without MC because I ran across a glitch where I couldn't get the MC lab. So I just went on without it. I made up for it with pulse disruptor launchers and a few sonic tanks.
Magnetic Ion Armor is where its at. If you have that stuff and a melee weapon you can take down anything in an enemy sub. The armor increase's the TU so you have a 100% chance of hitting someone essentially. MC makes the game a lot easier though.
I personally think Apoc was the best game of the Xcom series. The opposing cooperations added to the thrill and added to the atmospheric depth without increasing the difficulty. The settings and the style were also very well done. Sadly there was no real successor after Apoc.
I would give the first 2 games a 9.5/10 and Apoc a 10/10...the sucessors however...well a 3/10 at best.
@HaunterV It's not hard at all, trust me. For "ufo defense" and "terror from the deep" just use D-Fend Reloaded (which uses DosBox and does the hard work for you: just place the games in the "Virtual HD" folder present in your documents and settings or something) and for XCOM: Apocalypse just install it using Virtual PC (microsoft gives it to you for free).
For XCOM: Apocalypse just install Windows 98 SE in the virtual pc, install XCOMA just the way it used to be ages ago and PRESTO! You've got yourself a perfectly working classic! This is the absolute easiest way to enjoy this game (... apparently the steam version has some glitches here and there... and you pay money for it too... preposterous!).
@monkeyslaye i got through the 1st one without mind control on ps1. haven't got around to playing any of the others yet, but i think i'd love tftd just as much. the one on ps1 is so bugged, it feels like you're up against the aliens AND the bugs in the game!! :(
@monkeyslaye I've gotten through the game without MC, and even without magnetic Ion Armour. Its hard as balls but still possible. I screwed up with a research bug.
It's alluding to the next game, which was X-COM: Apocalypse. It took the concept of the first two games, but instead of controlling bases on the entire planet, you just run X-COM in one city and try to defend the city as opposed the whole planet. Not that great of a game compared to the first two masterpieces.
i never bothered with x-com tftd. I adored UFO enemy unknown, but TFTD just seemed like an expansion pack, not a new stand alone game, which is what it was supposed to be. TFTD was a lot lot harder than UFO too. I could never realy be arsed with it because of those god awful two part missions on ships that would take about 2 hours to complete each one. When you have 2 missions of that sort every month it gets a bit tedious after a while.
Probably more boring watching mindcontrol than it is when playing it. I enjoyed it especially after a bazillion missions without any mind control in the beginning.
@SD1612 +1 The satisfaction of securely mastering the level, mind controlling lobsters and dinosaurs and having them blast the crap out of brains and ufos, is really satisfying after putting up with mission after mission of aliens' very accurate fire and high TUs... not to mention your own guys panicking / being mc'd and emptying magazines into each other.
@Angus1MacGyver it s a lot boring play only with mind control...i finish the game without mind control, never used that...and its very funny (and hard)
I recently replayed this game, finished it in December 2040 (mainly while waiting to weed out my squad for MC-weak people). Could have finished it sooner but the first segment of T'leth would always mess me up with the MC.
Never DID use much of the MC Disruptor, most of my endgame was a 10-person squad with Sonic Cannons whose accuracy had been trained into the high 70's to the 100s.
Thanks for the video! I just Realised that my game is FUBAR thanks to the research bug i can't research the ships and a bunch of other stuff.....LAME! TBH the games soo annoying with the insanly long missions, massive maps and aliens hiding in toilets lol! First one is much better

EA? Good lord, no, it's 2K Games. If it was EA I'd have already lost any hopes of ever playing a decent Xcom remake ;)
Anyway, yeah. UFO is a very generic name. XCom 1 has always been "UFO Defense" in Europe, and then there's the newer UFO: After___ saga, and that UFO: Extraterrestrials game; but those have nothing to do with XCom, officially
I just beat this for the first time, btw. Of course, only in 2nd difficulty (XCom 1 in 3rd)... I guess I'll have to try Superhuman difficulty sometime :D
@HipHop1981 The new UFO games were never part of the X-COm universe. They were never claimed as such.
And 2K has the rights for X-Com, not EA. Christ, do your fucking research before making claims. Even one little fuck up can make you look like a complete idiot.
That was uneventful. You could mention where the ending starts in this video's description.
The music's ridiculously good, though - it sounds like the first X-Com's geoscape track, but an order of magnitude more complex. Where's it from? TFTD default? Amiga version? Playstation version?
SD1612, are you admonishing me for saying the level's boring when there's a large disclaimer at the start of it that warns of boredom? Take it easy. :P
Finally i did it.. at last i simply ignored all ufos.. just shot em down and researched for leviathan to get to this stupid last map and to see this crappy ending. Imho opinion the last UFO maps and the ending was way better and more satisfying than this...
THATS THE ENDING!? Jesus Christ thats lame. the game is so annoying to play. Every mission you play theres 1 last alien hiding somewhere that makes the mission last 80% longer then it should to find it. and the end result is that POS CGI clip. i'm glad i never beat it. Enemy Unknown FOREVER!
the boat missions were just horrible. i remember sitting for over 5 hours trying to find one last of them normal green dudes, but finally i just gave up
I finish this game only once and what i rememmber very good is alien hiden in the closet, i spend 2 hours looking that bastard. Probly that is why i finish it only once, I preffer UFO: Enemy Unknown, the best game ever, Terror from the Deep is on 2 position, Greetings to evry ufo-maniac ;)
oh man, congrats, on veteran their reaction time is insane, and question? why did u leave 2 units behind when u moved on? were they MCed or were they hit by the thermial shock bomb? and stunned?
There was a glitch that made it so you couldn't get the best sub and the best armor. It was called the The Deep One Dilemma (armor) & the The Tasoth Commander Trap.
I never got to finish this game even though I have played it maybe 100 times. I could never get the Mag Ion Armor or the plane that gets me to this level.
i had same problem, i found out about T'Leth but could never find it but then i never got as far as producing Mantra or the Leviathan which u need to get there. U need to research live lobstermen (Technician or commander?) and i think a live tasoth commander to get there. Wen i replay i'll try that.
Don't research the Tasoth Commander! There's a bug that prevents you from finishing the game if you do. You need Lobsterman Commander (or maybe 2 of them, not sure) + Lobsterman Navigator.
is that tasoth commander or live tasoth commander or either? i still aint got round to replaying it yet, funny that's all i can think about playing and completing when i've got gears of war 2 on order. thanks for the help, any other tips will be greatly appreciated
Obviously it's a live tasoth commander lol. A dead one would just appear as "Tasoth corpse. Other tips? Ok, research Deep One corpse, plastic aqua-armour and ion-beam accelerators before you research a live Deep One. Not doing so may mean missing Ion Armour (though there's a patch for it). For psychics, get a live Tasoth (not commander!) and any live Terrorist. For vibro blade you need Calcinite Corpse. Feel free to message me if you need any more tips.
Terror is a blast, if you can get past some of the silly-looking weapons and aliens, as well as the WTF-inducing physics (grenades underwater?).
What I like the most about this game is that it was MUCH harder (at least IMO), had more multi-level missions (alien base, ship attacks), and better tanks and armor.
X-com 1 was much easier to mod, though, and had a much better "feel" to it.
haha i noticed someone did a little bit of hacking, theres no way you brought like 6 ensigns along and won T'Leth, but yeah I'm impressed, you went into debug and changed there MC skill to FF I take it. I'm at a part of my game, I hit a glitch (not the commander one) but I researched IBA out of order and i now can't produce the subs.
No hacking fool. Save your lame presumptions. Once you get psi lab I only use aquanauts that have a high MC skill, I ditched the rest because they only get mind controlled.
Hax=for losers, ruins the game. This was just playing smart.
Lawlz, alrighty, I was just wondering cause you only had one base on the map, and I find it very difficult to manage with one base after I start taking down colonies. well yeah good job. haha, where did u get the music anyways?
No pude acabar este juego en su dia, tenia un bug que cuando investigaba al tasoth comandante no podias acabarlo... si a alguien mas le paso, me comprendera, en fin, le doy un 10 a este juego, era la ostia.
well thats because you were not suppose to research the tasoth commander thats a major bug that will make you fail just throw out the tasoth commander corpse dont bother researching it.
disable graphic driver, restart computer. once you need to do some more sophisticated stuff with ur comp, just enable it again and then restart. worked for me. I use the collectors edition, the ldr_xcom2.exe won't work unless you rename the actual .exe file from "tftd/terror" or whatever to "terror from the deep".
Wow. Cool, i have never beaten TFTD myself. The increase in difficulty from UFO Enemy Unknown was unbelievable. Tried it many times but always gave up up frustrated when those lobsters came into the game. ;)
I just got my old cd working by using dosbox, unfortunately all the cutscenes were made into a slideshow because dosbox cannot run the cutscenes, so i cant upload the proper things. But there are pictures of T'leth exploding (to answer the questions from before) so i imagine the working cutscenes will include this. Also the slideshow pictures included text explaining what is going on. (And yes, Cthulhu tells the aquanauts they will perish inside right before the explosion). :(
yea i just got it working after i wrote the comment :P. I looked about in the files for the anims but there wasnt any. So i found my old cd and moved the cutscenes into the file and it worked ^J^. And yea the actual original cutscene is longer than this. It has a longer scene with flame running along the tunnel. Then zooms out to T'leth exploding.
Thanks for posting it. I was really Pissed of when after beating all 3 levels of Tleth game crashed. I am slightly dissapointed with game ending thou. Whats going on with that green hand in the end?
i agree with CartoonAK, because i definetly remember the alien city exploding, this scene seems too short. I had the original game though, is this the collectors edition? If so that may be why its different.
Did you cut out the part where the whole alien city explodes (ergo all the aquanauts die)? Or did the makers do it when they ported the original PC version to whatever you played on?
Maybe they thought it's too harsh, when your sweet little soldiers die when saving the world.
I thought the ending showed more of the base being destroyed

LightandDark11 10 months ago
That was uneventful. You could mention where the ending starts in this video's description.
The music's ridiculously good, though - it sounds like the first X-Com's geoscape track, but an order of magnitude more complex. Where's it from? TFTD default? Amiga version? Playstation version?
Kizor 3 years ago
Sorry it didnt meet your expextations. I will try harder next time, just for you.
SD1612 3 years ago
The PSX version has the best quality (CD - 44100 16 bit stereo) and this one sounds like it.
timonczesq 3 years ago
Thank you kindly, timonczesq.
SD1612, are you admonishing me for saying the level's boring when there's a large disclaimer at the start of it that warns of boredom? Take it easy. :P
Kizor 3 years ago
Finally i did it.. at last i simply ignored all ufos.. just shot em down and researched for leviathan to get to this stupid last map and to see this crappy ending. Imho opinion the last UFO maps and the ending was way better and more satisfying than this...

Greetings from Chile, I spend 5 or 6 years of my life ending this game :p . I only have really play 2 games this and Doom II.
sablechino 3 years ago
T'Leth? Sounds very familiar to R'yleh and the cthulhu mythos.
Evilvillager1989 3 years ago
Yes, that's the idea. I didn't discover that until I read Kasey Chang's FAQ/guide about 4 or 5 years after I first played the game.
00bean00 3 years ago
THATS THE ENDING!? Jesus Christ thats lame. the game is so annoying to play. Every mission you play theres 1 last alien hiding somewhere that makes the mission last 80% longer then it should to find it. and the end result is that POS CGI clip. i'm glad i never beat it. Enemy Unknown FOREVER!
articfox2276 3 years ago
the boat missions were just horrible. i remember sitting for over 5 hours trying to find one last of them normal green dudes, but finally i just gave up
oggedask 3 years ago 2
I finish this game only once and what i rememmber very good is alien hiden in the closet, i spend 2 hours looking that bastard. Probly that is why i finish it only once, I preffer UFO: Enemy Unknown, the best game ever, Terror from the Deep is on 2 position, Greetings to evry ufo-maniac ;)

i want to play this again and pass it on superhuman again but..the video screen goes crazy when i start the game..so lame..

sonic displacers are the fucking shit.
nice video

Could'nt you just destroy the "coffin" with the master alien? Or is my memory off? Long time since I played this game.
MidgardEagle 3 years ago
No you had to destroy the white thingies around him. The master alien is immune to everything!
jeanstealer 3 years ago
Beating this on impossible while restricting your saves to mission starts (in case of crashes) and when quitting - now that's a challenge.

that'd be crazy if shit like this went down in real life :O

GamersBlogVids 3 years ago
what difficulty is this on? i beat it on beginner but with no MC and plastic aqua armor, i hit the research bug of not having a MC reader.
Towlheadbandit 3 years ago
It's on veteran
SD1612 3 years ago
oh man, congrats, on veteran their reaction time is insane, and question? why did u leave 2 units behind when u moved on? were they MCed or were they hit by the thermial shock bomb? and stunned?
Towlheadbandit 3 years ago
I just didn't really need them, I figured it would be just as easy with the 2 remaining troops.
SD1612 3 years ago
And what's the next "X-Com" game? Apocalipse?

yes

what software have you used to record the video?

It's a program called Fraps
SD1612 3 years ago
There was a glitch that made it so you couldn't get the best sub and the best armor. It was called the The Deep One Dilemma (armor) & the The Tasoth Commander Trap.
Dehumanization24 3 years ago 2
I never got to finish this game even though I have played it maybe 100 times. I could never get the Mag Ion Armor or the plane that gets me to this level.
DPUMA8 3 years ago
its all about research and stragetic with your ammo you have to know exactly what you have.
Linkx22 3 years ago
i had same problem, i found out about T'Leth but could never find it but then i never got as far as producing Mantra or the Leviathan which u need to get there. U need to research live lobstermen (Technician or commander?) and i think a live tasoth commander to get there. Wen i replay i'll try that.
AshUlysses31 3 years ago
Don't research the Tasoth Commander! There's a bug that prevents you from finishing the game if you do. You need Lobsterman Commander (or maybe 2 of them, not sure) + Lobsterman Navigator.
jeanstealer 3 years ago 2
is that tasoth commander or live tasoth commander or either? i still aint got round to replaying it yet, funny that's all i can think about playing and completing when i've got gears of war 2 on order. thanks for the help, any other tips will be greatly appreciated
AshUlysses31 3 years ago
Obviously it's a live tasoth commander lol. A dead one would just appear as "Tasoth corpse. Other tips? Ok, research Deep One corpse, plastic aqua-armour and ion-beam accelerators before you research a live Deep One. Not doing so may mean missing Ion Armour (though there's a patch for it). For psychics, get a live Tasoth (not commander!) and any live Terrorist. For vibro blade you need Calcinite Corpse. Feel free to message me if you need any more tips.

Loved Enemy Unknown but Terror never appealed to me, the ending looks pretty poor though green hand wtf?
NYR2K8 3 years ago
Terror is a blast, if you can get past some of the silly-looking weapons and aliens, as well as the WTF-inducing physics (grenades underwater?).
What I like the most about this game is that it was MUCH harder (at least IMO), had more multi-level missions (alien base, ship attacks), and better tanks and armor.
X-com 1 was much easier to mod, though, and had a much better "feel" to it.

Great moments of nostalgia, great music and some great X-COM playing to boot. Added to my favorites.
DieOfGoodLuck 3 years ago
haha i noticed someone did a little bit of hacking, theres no way you brought like 6 ensigns along and won T'Leth, but yeah I'm impressed, you went into debug and changed there MC skill to FF I take it. I'm at a part of my game, I hit a glitch (not the commander one) but I researched IBA out of order and i now can't produce the subs.
Towlheadbandit 3 years ago
No hacking fool. Save your lame presumptions. Once you get psi lab I only use aquanauts that have a high MC skill, I ditched the rest because they only get mind controlled.
Hax=for losers, ruins the game. This was just playing smart.
SD1612 3 years ago
Lawlz, alrighty, I was just wondering cause you only had one base on the map, and I find it very difficult to manage with one base after I start taking down colonies. well yeah good job. haha, where did u get the music anyways?
Towlheadbandit 3 years ago
Dont you just love how many enemies are just shoved into corner in this game xD. Lol yo whats that song it was awesome

No pude acabar este juego en su dia, tenia un bug que cuando investigaba al tasoth comandante no podias acabarlo... si a alguien mas le paso, me comprendera, en fin, le doy un 10 a este juego, era la ostia.
Arilouu 3 years ago
well thats because you were not suppose to research the tasoth commander thats a major bug that will make you fail just throw out the tasoth commander corpse dont bother researching it.

does anyone know where i can get a working version of X-com for my PC. I have vista.
Peacekeeper76 3 years ago
disable graphic driver, restart computer. once you need to do some more sophisticated stuff with ur comp, just enable it again and then restart. worked for me. I use the collectors edition, the ldr_xcom2.exe won't work unless you rename the actual .exe file from "tftd/terror" or whatever to "terror from the deep".
asdfafga0 3 years ago
to Peacekeeper76* and others with vista out there :)

Malcolm2400 4 years ago
Actually I ran this with dosbox and it played the cutscenes just fine, no slide shows.
SD1612 4 years ago
yea i just got it working after i wrote the comment :P. I looked about in the files for the anims but there wasnt any. So i found my old cd and moved the cutscenes into the file and it worked ^J^. And yea the actual original cutscene is longer than this. It has a longer scene with flame running along the tunnel. Then zooms out to T'leth exploding.
Malcolm2400 4 years ago
that's funny, i'm playing a game right now where i've got one Mario Bonal that looks exactly like that on the inventory menu
qqq7005 4 years ago
The game is designed so excellently. By the end of the game, you've got so many weapons to bring to bear, the aliens really are helpless.
Atreus21 4 years ago
Lol less your playing on superhuman then its always fair game.Thats why i love playing it xP.

i want to download this sounds, pls tell me where to get it.
and my version of this game is buggy :(
there are 2 bugs: size of screen is much too wide and there is also a research bug i cant get a new shipclass :(
so a link to another version to download would be great too. hope someone helps me

Thanks for posting it. I was really Pissed of when after beating all 3 levels of Tleth game crashed. I am slightly dissapointed with game ending thou. Whats going on with that green hand in the end?
Lord1Mackus 4 years ago
Not sure what the green hand means...another sequel that never came to be perhaps..
To answer ther other questions:
This is the collectors edition yes, nothing of the end sequence was cut out by me.
The music is from the playstation version, and not from terror from the deep, but from Xcom UFO defense.
SD1612 4 years ago
i see. i guess t'leth exploded only in PC DOS version (which cartoonak and malcolm2400 mentioned)
Lord1Mackus 4 years ago
I don't suppose you have the animated intro to upload as well...?

Trisnic 4 years ago
i agree with CartoonAK, because i definetly remember the alien city exploding, this scene seems too short. I had the original game though, is this the collectors edition? If so that may be why its different.
Malcolm2400 4 years ago 2
Did you cut out the part where the whole alien city explodes (ergo all the aquanauts die)? Or did the makers do it when they ported the original PC version to whatever you played on?
Maybe they thought it's too harsh, when your sweet little soldiers die when saving the world.
CartoonAK 4 years ago
This is the pc version and nothing has been cut out.
