I just translated the German version to English.. it has a VERY different meaning in terms of viewpoint from the Astronaut. Kind of cynical.. the lyrics in English were clearly candy-coated for US airplay.

I thought that the German pronunciation of the word "Major" sounded phonetically more like "MAH Yoor".... weird. Guess it's the area of Germany he was from. My relatives who were from there always thought it was odd when they heard this song.

@Willenbrock96 kommt drauf an... ich finde es eigentlich total schön und positiv, denn major tom sagt zwar zum schluss ihm wird kalt, aber davor sagt er ja dass er bald zurückkommt. er war halt auf ner besonderen reise, dessen ende durch das eintreten der kälte eingeläutet wird. wer sagt dass er jetzt mit der neuen erfahrung "mich führt ein licht durchs all" "wenn die wüssten" nicht zurück auf die erde kommt. die kälte muss nicht automatisch für den tod stehen.

OK...to expand on yorgle's answer...the first time through it's "Dann hebt er ab und!..." which translates to "Then he takes off and! …"

....and the second time through it's "Er schwebt weiter..." which is "He continues floating" etc.

LOTS of English bands played this edgy slightly aggressive well-tuned style. And there were also lots of English bands who were influenced by German sound - more electronicly !
