While i think people are capable of good even without a concept of the soul i think the idea of metaphysical consequence could help to limit the worst we are capable of while alive (responsibility).
The song is Michael perceiving change in society... In the song he finds that human beings have abandoned the concept of the soul, God, afterlife and of charity as something you should do as a service to that soul...
Instead he now sees humans as living for the now, for themselves, for the material - and he suggests that that being the case they should logically try to avoid death (believing in no afterlife) and instead pray or hope for more time alive (since life is now their 'paradise').
I think this is his best song, it is about a serious topic for him and the lyrics are splendid - the melody is just gorgeous - very delicate and affecting. It just sounds eerie, like the confession of the ghost of the human race itself.

this is why big corparate music companies suck so bad. sony completely ruined g. micheal, he was never the same artist after they had those legal issues for 3 or 4 yrs. in the prime of his carear, and he wasnt making any music, because sony was making him a contract prisoner, it was right after this album. think of what the follow up to this would have been like if he would have just gone in the studio and made it in a normal time fashion. one of the biggesty robberies ever. i hate you sony.
His later stuff is just super sonic off the charts. He still has his amazing voice and way with a song, but his depth of understanding and outreach is beyond most artists. Very conscientious. Bonita!

George Michael has been apraised by almost every single musician including Elton John. His voice is one of the most accurately "on" in the ENTIRE business. Although i am not a big fan of his choice of music, he is probably the greatest singer to ever walk this earth. Give this comment a thumbs up so that everyone can appreciate it and read it. Exactly jakker, I think george is speaking from a point of view that applys to all of us including himself who have been naughty in life(no-one is perfect) The line" I guess somewhere along the way he must have let us all out to play turned his back and all gods children crept out the back door" sums that up beautifully I think!!
