we use ropes to stop a fall are you saying you would do it without.
The belay is a standard technique used before harness was about, if you see people climbing like this now chances are their good climbers

Nice climb, but why use a rope? That belaying was rubbish! Looked like he was just holding the rope in his hands. Would have been painful if the moss had spat you off. Well done for staying on the rock though!

Chalk is fine if used sensibly, but no chalk or leave it at home is a good starting point.
