I've never really understood the application or even concept of "bebop scales". I mean, I get the idea, it sort of gives you a format for creating bebop lines, but isn't it more useful to think of most bebop lines and simply being chord tones with half step approaches?
what type of guitar are you using it sounds beautiful but i have never seen one like that, i have seen the eppiphones and the gibsons like that but i cant see it looks like the vintage or haratige models
thanks man this is some legit stuff, never knew it was called deflecting, always thought that lick where you go up to the 9th was just the *sings* "da-vid-ba-ker jazz lick" haha that may not have translated. thanks again
very helpful. I play a bebop song in my jazz band and i never do improv on it because I dont have a good idea of what bebop sounds like, i also didn't know that arpeggio and using the chromatics the way you showed sounds great.
Good lesson but you need to slow it down when you are showing the chromatic Stern lick. You have chops, but your subscribers would like o see it SLOWER. Thanks
It's there. Look at about 2:50. You have to imagine it coated in thick chorus like Mike Stern though! What a great lesson. This has just shaved off a lot of practice trial and error. Thanks so much.
I know all my modes, diatonically and chromatically and my 7th chord and extended arpeggios in every key; and it still doesn't work that well for me! I WISH SOMEONE HAD SHOWN ME THIS 30 yrs AGO! Thank You!
I had a conversartion with jazz guitar great Bruce Forman in the 80s. He said the modal way that guitar is taught is wrong! That's how I learned, but the be-bop players didn't play that way; they ran be-bop licks over the chords. Those licks are based on 7th chord arpeggios. Yes learn your modes but learn to run the changes (arpeggiate) and learn to play 'key-of-the-moment. Ya can't run scales all the time. Now I'm learning to play just off the melody; that works the best for me!
The problem with scales is that they are a tool, and a lot of time appropriate, but you get to a point where you know those inside out - and I'm not talking pentatonic and diatonic, but whole tone, the different applications of the melodic minor (there are many ), the diminished, knowing the arpeggios built on those, playing them in 4th and 5th intervals, and adding chromatics to what you already know - experimenting with things with different feels and rhythms. Then you're getting somewhere.
This acroally helps and i understand it, its like what they advertise but its free. i just want to learn without buying dvds and such. its perfect THANKS

"That, itself, sounds very bebopish..." < That was the Dominate Seventh Bebop Scale.
Show how much most guitarists actually know about this stuff... Lol.

Mike Stern often use chromatic runs like he describes.
By the way - awesome lesson - not only teaching a lick, teach how you can move through it - great!

Shown you what? What about this video was a revelation.
I'm asking because I'm probably where you were 30 years ago (skill wise), and I'm afraid I've missed something important.
I'm new at this whole not-pentatonic thing.
