Its controversial not because its not true, but because it is...to a degree. I believe in God, pray to him and when I do pray to him I only say thank you for all the good in my life. However, it is true that God does become a huge factor when other support mechanisms in people's lives disappear, like the state. There is to me a correlation between the collapse of the welfare state and the rise of religion...

It is exactly right. Historically speaking, one of the reasons Christianity has been so appealing to black in America who were formally slaves was because life was extremely tough for them. Here comes a religion that says: After life as long as you are good obedient slave, you'll go to a wonderful place called heaven where you'll live in eternal happiness. People find it so difficult to imagine that things are intertwined in such a way. Politics and religion in this country have slept together every night since the beginning! They've had millions of children and religion is starting to prolapse (gross i know but so is the reality of it.) Why cant people just imagine us as a complete community? Lots of people are being purposely deprived for the sake of a few small self serving agendas. Sad :(
