  • What people may not realize is that it was Alys who had trained Chaz for a few years even though she's not a "Main" Character, she's a central plot character that in turn developed Chaz's disposition. When she couldn't fight (Gah what was it that killed her, I haven't played the game for months and I have the Ps2 Collection somewhere) off what was killing her, Chaz's attitude had a serious adjustment, strengthening his resolve to eliminate Zio, as well as the Profound Darkness.

  • I thought she was the main character too,

  • needs more cowbell. no seriously, it does.

  • Wow, this theme is great. It fits the scene perfectly. I think Alys' death was the saddest moment I've ever experienced in a video game, even if it was spoiled to me beforehand.

  • The one dislike was the convulsing follower in Zio's church.

  • @Ange1234 rofl!!! just... rofl!!

  • This was the first death scene I ever saw in a video game, it was a shock to say the least.

  • when hearing this, i always feel guilty.... couldn't save that fine woman!

  • its not just alys' death its her illusion battle at anger tower

  • me: hmm im bored

    justin bieber comes

    OMFG JUSTIN BEIBER

    IM GONNA KILL U!!

    song plays

  • if i remember aerith save the entire planet from destruction by awakening holy, and got killed by sephiroth after her task was done

  • Perfect game and song...

  • Poor Alys, sacrificed herself to save her protege. This scene in the game made me cry so hard. What do you mean she's dead and she's never coming back?! I think her death was more powerful than the one in PS II as well.

  • Most tragic video game death. Worse than Aeris' :(

  • @TerranMeUp It tops Aerith's death because Alys saved Chaz from utter destruction while Cloud stood there watching as his woman was slain.

  • @Krushak8888 You have to admit that although it was obvious to everyone but Cloud, he still couldn't have anticipated that.

  • @straightedgectb Perhaps but I never played 7 but I hear how it was painfully obvious that he came down and sliced her in half with his mighty blade.

  • @straightedgectb people do say it's overrated, i've beaten it about 3 times now, but i't still an incredible game.

  • This song is such a tearjerker...Alys was so awesome. :(

  • When I fought Zio for the second time, I yelled: YOU'RE GOING TO PAY FOR ALYS'S DEATH!

    Sega > SquareSoft

  • i had just bought my copy and reached the town of tyler, i was standing infront of alis landale's gravestone, and my mom came in and told me my cat, ( who i'd named chaz ) got hit by a car.

    sad as it may seem

this game is epic i reccommend it to everyone.

    must play.

  • ALYS! NOOOOOOOOOOOOO! </3

  • @xGolbezx

    Alys,

She was & still is, my beloved daughter.

  • Playing through this moment was a scarring thing for me as a child. I think Alys was always one of my favourite chracter and I appreciated having her there even more since I played through PS in order and was wondering if she was a descendant of Alis Landale. ...the promise of a Collection of PS titles where if you played through in order start to finish you could save both Nei and Alys once brought excited me no end.. I always wanted the chance to go back and right this moment. always.

  • Who was the one Final Fantasy Fanboy that Disliked this?

  • zio fucks shit up

  • Ah. This was the first game that brought tears to my eyes. And it was when Alys died. She had grown on me. She was tough, determined, straight-forward and quite beautiful too.

  • Alys wasn't that typical chick in JRPG's out in today's market. She wasn't a pathetic emo either. Her attachment to the player was like that of a mentor figure so you couldn't help but grow envious of her.

  • Beautiful. T_T.

    Dear sweet Alys,

You are now free of this mortal coil, yet you will remain in my heart forever.

Sweetheart, you are very precious to me.

The strange thing is, I have not played the game (yet).

  • Why couldn't it of been Hawn!?!

  • @hypertreb What?! Hahn is awesome! You mean, Rika, right? It'd keep with the whole "Numan dies" thing.

  • I hate it when characters die

  • Gryz should've died instead. Damn!

  • I'm still not sure why people are so obsessed with comparing Alys's death with Aeris's. You aren't going to convince and rabid FF7 fan boys that they're wrong. Those people are messed in the head because they're FF7 fanboys to begin with. It's pretty futile.

    We're the enlightened. Don't tell anyone. :3

  • I honestly feel that this one was a lot more emotional and unexpected. . .They're both pretty powerful moments in their own rights, but this was a tad bit more sad to me. . .

Plus Alys was such a badass.

  • @GM1188

Pretty much. I'd take a retrospective and funeral all paying the proper respects over a bouncy materia, angst and a quick bath, but hey... enlightened, as you say. ;)

  • This was vastly different from Aeris's death. Alys was Chaz's teacher and mentor--she took him in from the street and taught him everything she knew, and gave him a home where no-one else would. I think this was the most deeply moving death I've seen in an RPG, because of the struggle Chaz faced in whether to move on and fight without her, and his talk with Rune after the fact.

  • I remember the part where on Rykros later in the game (before you get Megid) how an illusion of Alys attacks Chaz and it devastates him. Really touching story.

  • I won't really say the death of Aeris was less emotional. If you cared was a matter of if you wanted to see her and Cloud hook up. If you wanted that happy ending, then it's emotional.

Though, I still like how death of Alys played out more. First she takes that big risk to save Chaz from a fatal blow. Then there seams to be a promise of hope if you manage to find Rune and the wand. After returning, you find that nothing could be done to save her life. Better execution, in my opinion.

  • Thanks for posting this one; have the game but it's nice to not have to go dig out the genesis or an emulator for it.

That being said, the Aeris vs Alys death comparison is, as stated, hardly a comparison at all. Alys's was just on a totally different level.

When Alys died, I cried, even after several times through the game, always has such impact.

Aeris? She didn't have much emotional attachment on her in the first place, and it was worth it just to see Sephy kill someone.

  • Let's just say Aeris's death has nothing on this, honestly, this was way more heartfelt to me, because it was not as sudden, it was dragged out, poor Alys. It made me want to kick Zio's ass to oblivion that much more, when I got to him, I remember saying "OK bitch, you're going down!"

But yeah, this scene easily tops Aeris's death by a long shot. Glad to see others who actually agree with me on this one. Long live Phantasy Star.

  • @IcedEarthaholic

U speak of Aeris and Alys :)

Aeris died in FF7 and that was very unusual these days. i mean that a main character dies was the most intense element for an rpg. but phantasy star 4 did this already years ago. epic game, a piece of art in video game history

  • Perfect theme for a depressing moment such as Alys' death...

Really gives me a sunken feeling.

  • Oh hey, I got Alys the Laser Slasher and got her to learn Deathstr-- FFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUU

  • Haha, it was totally like that for me, too. I think I also had Gifoi.

  • If only Rune learned the tech "REVER" to revive Alys...

  • I don't think it would of helped much at this point, you know? I always had the impression Dark Force really whalloped her with this breath attack. Maybe the only reason no one would permanently die in the other fights is because Rune and the Psycho Wand might be some protection against Dark Force's true might. I guess we'll never know.

  • I highly recommend using Kaloes' Alys trick on the emulator if you want to use her in the final battle.

  • Is that the one that replaces Rika. I dunno, I like Rika a lot. Still, it'd be fun to try once.

  • It's more of a challenge since Alys has no healing magic on her (She's mostly attack magic and slicers). Alys' Nafoi and Vortex were useful in boss fights. You can get Rika at the end of the game before fighting De-Vars and Sa-Lews but you'll have to level her up good and equip her (Xanafalgue code, anyone?).

  • I'll have to try it out sometime. I wonder if I could keep a low level Rika alive for a Sandworm fight or something, that'd beef her up pretty quick. haha

  • Chazz; What am I FIGHTING FOOOOOOOOOOOR!!! that is what he should say if they remake this game with voice overs!!

  • too bad zero from megaman already said that quote xD

  • Didn't Chaz actually say something like that after Alys' death?

  • umm no... he didn't even shout anything

  • I was referring to after Alys' death on the balcony talking with Rune. Y'know, star-lit sky and all that. :D

  • its so sad

  • I thought nei's death was way more sad. Actually I felt nothing at all when Alys died the first time I played through the game, weird.

  • Still, got to admit it tops Aerith's death.

  • I was going to post the exact same thing as you (about it topping Aeris/Aerith's death) hah I thought I was the only one that thought that o_o

  • Heh, thanks. I mean, Aerith's death is a big moment in video game history, but I think a big part of it is I didn't use her very often, so I didn't miss her much.

  • @Arrowdodger

    Seconded.

Aerith's death was really melodramatic, almost to a theatrical level. Whether or not that works, well, depends on how much you liked Aerith.

Alys, though...damn, her death was way more realistic. It was slow, painful, and all you could do was sit and watch as she succumbed to her demise.

  • @Arrowdodger Yeah, I cried when Alys died. Not a tear ever went to Aerith. I was filled with rage towards Zio after this scene.

  • @DartUchiha Lol! same here bro... Aerith's death was just a bummer like "WTF? sudden stab!?, that sucks...", but it didn't make me cry like Alys's death did, that was the first time i had ever cried to a video game, it scars you that bad...

  • @Mustadio First time I cried to a video game was The Legend of Dragoon near the end of disc 1. Starts to become my favorite character and BOOM, dead! FFVII did make me cry, but that was for Zack. And don't even start on any of the animes made by Key Visual. I swear every story I read, see in a movie, or a video game that I've played gives me a favorite character from the rest of the cast and later on it is that character that I like that ends up dieing.

  • you should have kept the music going. it eventually stops

  • Comment removed

  • A very heart felt moment in the game.

I was shocked when i saw dis part and this music in the BG...wow.

  • The first game that actually made me truly sad when someone died or whatever. It actually makes me cry.

  • I think it would have been cooler if Sega really made you believe Alys was the main character.Like put her on the box art. Why? Well when I played the game for the first time I was kept wondering when something was going to happen to Alys due to the fact she wasn't on the box art.

  • Indeed. I also thought Alys was one of the main characters. But since she wasn't in the box art, it was obvious.

  • @MushroomBoy64 well you can't say that, I mean look at ps1. That girl was on the box art and the hint book.

  • @MushroomBoy64 I never SAW the box art, I played this on Sega Channel, so it actually shocked the ever-loving crap out of me and left deep scars.

  • @thaneros I felt it started to become obvious that she was going to die, because every other character sorta suprasses her- or at least thats what i thought.

  • @thaneros I never thought she was the main character but I wasn't playing the game thinking when she was going to die. She still seemed like an important character. She seemed like the second main at least. Y'know I just don't really trust game box art especially back then. It just showed whatever they felt was goign to be cool. And back then they were really hit and miss.

  • @GadGades

Agreed. The boxart for the first one was quite atrocious. The third one came close to making sense, except that the scenery and character didn't match.

  • @laughingfurry Speaking of, today I found the box of the GBA collection. Rolf is drawn alright, but two other girls on it are really off. I had the cartridge about box the third one game in, that was a good visual, in a music album kinda way.

  • @GadGades

I agree about the music album comment. Come to think of it, the cover art for the three Genesis titles are almost perfect cover art for most European Metal. Someone like Deathstars or Machinae Supremacy.

As for the two girls on the GBA collection, I don't think it's so bad. Although, if that was supposed to be Alis, it really does look weird. Plus, if that was supposed to be Nei, she doesn't look as bad as on the original Genesis cover, imo.

  • This song brings tears to my eyes because Alys is my favorite character in the game but at least there is an action replay code that prevents her death

  • Yeah, a lot of people have said that.

  • poor alys, if only chaz or rune had a better plan of defeating zio...

  • This song can get to you

  • Finally someone comments on this.
