I despise American Idol. It goes against every fiber of belief I have in music. The Simon Cowell Cookie Cutter Factory of creating “stars” really gets on my last nerve.
@TheMattmanmm Gavin's their drummer. Richard plays synths, etc. Their touring guitarist, John Wesley, plays backup because that's what a touring guitarist does, fills a hole in the lineup and fills holes in the music.
@joelco92 yea i have to agree with everything you said, except for the modest. if you have seen them live, he gets most of the awesome parts while the other members of the band get the not so awesome parts. but he is still AWESOME!
@TheMattmanmm That's just cuz he writes the stuff, he puts feeling into it that it's difficult to get out otherwise. He also is the main star of P-Tree, he's te only reason some people go to the shows.
I think Steven Wilson may just be my favorite person in the entire world... he has never said anything that I disagree with. He is so modest, honest, and real.
steven wilson is a real artist, i've been listening to PT's music for few months now through some comments of Mikael Akerfeldt from Opeth
artists should be this way talented, creative, and also with deep insight and outsight thinking, not a bunch of guys that want to be part of the system, or people that wants to be famous and party all the time
we need people that are trying to explore and share other way of thinking
While I generally agree with his main point - Pop Idol is crud, manufactured music is not real music etc.
However I don't think" they" (Simon Cowell backed acts) are trying to occupy the same space as the more independent, more creative artists and bands that are out there.
There is simply a different audience for each and these two streams have always run in parallel.
@GabrielsNob If the big label fake music was gone, what would people be listening to? Independent artists. How many children have never been exposed to real music? The majority of those people listen to that type of music, because that's what they're fed by mainstream culture. Like he said, they're inspiring another generation to think of music in terms of popularity and money, not expression of the self. They're making music to sell, that's it. Which is in direct conflict with musics spirit.
@Hellcoam It's hard to get any sort of structure when you have a character limit. Kinda just have to spew out ideas and hope people get your point. I didn't even have enough room for apostrophes, and other punctuation. I'd be glad to write out a proofread paper on the subject, and send it to you if that's you want. If not, remind yourself that these are youtube comments. It's ok to not structure them. Also, it's not that hard to follow, I'm calling your literacy into question here.
@jpjeffery Better than the Incident? Wow. It was fucking amazing, looking forward to their next also, because they're musical geniuses. Did you see them perform it live? Saw their North American opener, devastatingly great.
@Hopspop I really don't rate The Incident. The second disc is good, but disc one is very patchy. Nothing like as good as the previous three or four (or five or six) albums.
I did see it live though, at The Hammersmith Odeon, er Apollo. It was better live, TBH.
"civilisation has amused itself to the point of catatonia". wow. this why we buy the worthless stuff they put out so blatantly in front of us- we're just so exhausted we'll take whatever's easiest for us. we've burnt out so much through endless explosions of wannabe musicians that we don't know what's real and true anymore. and a lot of us don't have the energy to figure it out for ourselves. makes me hope it's a burnout cycle. maybe one day people will get tired of the catatonia. i so hope.
You would have to really be in denial if you really think that music didn't change for the worst.Hopefully music will progress in mainstream instead the fans wanna digress on things with true meaning because that's what these greedy corporations wanted and the General Population fell for it.
@RnBrealist This guy has a point bro only someone who is self deluded would disagree with this guys statement. He was pretty accurate in this video about the music industry no doubt about that.
I agree with Mr. Wilson 100%. I really wish that somebody could break into the signal that is broadcasting "American Idol" and put this on right as they are announcing who is going to be eliminated. It would piss alot of people off but it would also make alot of people happy. Of course those who would be pleased by such an act probably wouldn't be watching "American Idol" in the first place.
Even though it's become a bit of a cliche for certain bands to criticise the music industry (which is definitely correct) i think no one does it better than SW :D
Steven is a genius. I totally agree with him. He's my favourite modern musician. He's one of the few who care about delivering art, not a product to satisfy the conditioned masses.
well put!! Music has been reduced to american idol, food has been reduced to mcDonalds, TV has been reduced to stupid celebrity reality shows.. Some people get sick of it in the end. Those people are our audience.
@willregnier Learn to spell 'genius'.. seriously. The past 5 Steven Wilson videos I've been to have a top rated comment referring to him as a "genious".

Still, well said Steven Wilson. I'm looking forward to the next PT album (with the hope that it's better than the last).
