In the movie they mention why. Human involvement/presence kept away the sand and help keep the land fertile to prevent desertification. The desert claimed it back when the people became zombies and the desert slowly started to expand. I think they forgot to mention the animals had also left/died/zombified cause it kinda doesn't make much sense with that reasoning unless there was nothing left alive, but it still is a wacky story that doesn't even seem plausible.

First, i thought that their greates mistake was giving Alice superpowers.That just doesnt fit.Then i got used to it but then another mistake came - forgeting Leon who would mostly fit in RE2.But they had a guy like Carlos Olivera so they didnt need Leon that much, but now when he's gone they could put Leon in this one.But these mistakes are nothing compared with the ending of RE3.Clones?Fucking clones?I couldnt belive my eyes.
