I have got a very good hint for you to keeping the nice old Engine in good shape with todays ultra dry eco fuels: Use 1:100 API TC two stroke oil / fuel mix as regular driving fuel, that keeps the old fuel-system gaskets, rubber parts, alloy parts etc... and cast iron metal surfaces of those vintage engines in excellent shape...and it also lubricates the valves and upper piston regions. Most Porsche vintage owners in Germany do so :) Also keeps carbs and tank clean and rustfree
I had this exact noise onj my v6 alfa. I have just had the cambelt and tensioner replaced and the noise is still there. I took it back to have it rechecked and the timing was fine and couldnt find anything wrong with it.
The noise allso dissapears after a minute.
What else could it be? Noisy lifter? Dam noises. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGH!

I have just changet my distribution and I had exactly the same noise coming from cambelt. I'm glad that these topic exist. Is it dangerous to drive the car if its lose? My car doesnt do these much noise but I hear it ... also 166 3.0 v6
Paccuicco they didn't do an inline 6, if it was the engine would be a lot longer, the rear bank of cylinders is under the plenum chamber, who's the idiot now, youtube is full of ppl like u, shouting insults without a clue what they're on about
@pacciucco sadly, you're not alone with that opinion. Belive me, it is a V6. Don't let yourself bothered by the intake manifold pipies being in a line.
@pacciucco It's a V6, not a 6 in line. Idiot. Idiot. Idiot Idiot. Idiot. The last Alfa Romeo model using straight-six was Alfa Romeo 2600 (1961–1969). Idiot.
I had the same sound at cold engine, then i've changed cambelt and spannrolle(problem was in spannrolle), problem solved.. My car is 156 V6 2002. Good luck!
hy everybody, i have a 156 2 litre twin spark and it did the same noise at startup. i changed the belts and the variator amd i've cleaned the engine inside with forte product. now the sound is gone and i'ts running much more smoother. maybe this will help ya. bye
You have to use a less viscous oil and you should try to use some products for the hydraulic valve lifters, which eliminate dirty that doesn't allow the oil to reach the valve lifters when the engine is cold.
Another common fault is the "diesel-noise" from the Twin Spark engines. It's a typical failure of the Phase Variator that produce loss of top power, less power under 3.000 rpm and higher fuel consumption. It also produces the typical "diesel-noise".
The "diesel-noise" will in the beginning last only a few seconds after turning your key to start the engine. But it will last longer and longer. There should be no problem driving with this, you will not damage anything, but it should be fixed together with the cambelt change.
so if somebody else was experiencing a rare loss of power when reaching higher rpm, with the "beautiful" diesel noise... repair the phase variator (along with the cambelt change)
a) the 8 valve twin spark motors dont have this problem and b) the PV has nothing to do with loss of power, The only thing that it does is adjusting the camshaft abit for smooth running at idle
could be a idler bearing mate, as soon as it warms up after a few revolutions it stops, also check all you engine mounts, does it happen when you rev the car as well?
Awsome intake

is it dangerous if it products noise like this only slower to make it break?
signiV6 2 years ago
yeah, i recommend u change cambelt, 2 rolls and 1 spannrolle as soon as possible.
Good luck!
Galym22 2 years ago
I think it is because the engine need more lubrication. Maybe more oil or better qualifyed
opskier2 3 years ago
As the topic says, the problems is a loose cambelt. Noise disappeared after tensioner re-adjustment!
tekija11 3 years ago
They need replacing at the same time as the cambelt really.

this is V6!! There is no variator!!!
Galym22 3 years ago
Just engine started, sound like a disel motor because lubricating motor valves.
Se ho ben sentito fa un rumore tipo disel, è normale sui motori Alfa Romeo perché appena avviati lubrificano le valvole.

i have a 156 ts 2.0 and makes the same noise... but no one can fix it... it is something that happens when they get a little old??
johnniew3 4 years ago
It is possible to fix it.
You have to use a less viscous oil and you should try to use some products for the hydraulic valve lifters, which eliminate dirty that doesn't allow the oil to reach the valve lifters when the engine is cold.
Lets try with the Berdahal product,it work fine.

Micha22578 2 years ago
Its just the cambelt tensionor or noisy Injectors so Stfu. lol
antonyr123 2 years ago
yes ive heard that before. my 166 gave me nothing but problems, but i dont care i loved that car
uwmbigb 4 years ago
Its a Coil on Plug leaking Highvoltage.
Theres a Crack somewhere in the Rubberisolator
which closes due to material expansion when it
warms up.
