if someones family member dies he or she will mourn 1 month 2 months or at most 1 or 2 years, but not 1400 hundreds years, only lunatics and insane person can do that. You are right, but several things: 1- Usually Islam is enforced in Muslim countries such as Afghanistan or Iran etc. You are born with that and have to practice these things 2-Living together in a single society, limits your actions. I can not smoke heroin, even if it's my own life! Similarly, such extreme mourning "seems" to intensify violence and is not the direction of public safety/mental health specially for kids to watch 3- Sometimes they cut their head and torture their bodies too

Yes, I understand these things your right... BUT, this man that was martyred was leading the Muslim community at the time, and he was a holy man. He was the Prophet (pbuh)'s grandson, who the Prophet (pbuh) loved with ALL his heart. You've gotta understand. This is a religious ritual and is only done for the Prophet (pbuh)'s family. The family of the Prophet were attacked, humiliated in public and were made to suffer in their pain and thirst.
