Ok first of all, you wish you were as good of a drummer as Mike Portnoy.

Second, this dude uses all the crap that goes into his set. So it's not like he just sets up a bunch of nonsense toys and doesn't use them. If you'll look at the video of him recording Panic Attack, he uses EVERY SINGLE THING on his set.

So it doesn't matter how much people have on their set, it's how they use it.

I own all of the studio albums from When Dream and Day Unite through Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence. I was very into DT for years, but I think Portnoy has become extremely overrated in comparison to other progressive players such as Danny Carey, Virgil Donati and Mike Mangini. I think many drummers like Portnoy because he overplays and plays into the drummer mentality, but there are far better players out there who are far more musical than he is.
