  • @superKLchannel

Molting is where the crab outgrows his old shell and moves into a new one

  • I got my hermit crab in 2008 and i still have it! 

  • what is molting????

  • Its interesting she chose to do this out in the open, usually they bury. But, very pretty crab!

  • @superpokemonfan911 your hermie is a girl and those are eggs, congrats. but they can only live if the have an ocean so i suggest you let them into the ocean.

  • @sabi123ist yes, its very normal, my hermie dug under his bedding and stayed there for 2 days but i heard scratching all through the night so i took a look at him and when he finally surfaced he didnt molt so, that might be the case. hermit crabs will sleep for 20 hours if their owners let them..

  • why is he not underground? was it a on the top molt?

  • i can understand what are you guys saying.=D

  • He's eating Special K cereal?

  • Do land hermit crabs have to be outside of their shells to molt? One of mine is being very still, but he was moving a little yesterday. Now his body is pailer but he doesn't smell like they say dead hermit crabs do. He's still in his shell though.

  • Is it a C.rugosus ... or a C.variabilis ?

  • hehe!!!

    he molted while eating see.........

  • how many times does the hermit crab usually molts? i have one and he already molted once, dunno when he'll molt again. thanks

  • :( it looks dead, is he chirpying or moving at all

  • mines been in the ground for 1 and a half weeks and hes cramped in a small painted very spiraled shell is he stuck?

  • incredible footage. do you have to isolate it from the others?

  • Mine usually come out of there shells to molt unless there are a bunch of other crabs in the tank with them.

  • iv been hearing all types of scratchy sounds and moving under the forest bedding in my cage is that normal??? please reply i need help!

  • god these comments are disturbing everyone please look up facts on these little guys they are a huge responsibility probably more than a dog they take a lot of care and are very interesting

  • do i have to icolate my herrmit crab beacuse i do not know what to do i do not even know that it might be molting it has orange things in it shell

  • my baby hermit got out of his shell and now he dug in the sand and hes not moving what is he doing?

  • @KILLJOY341 im not shure i started this pet 3 months ago but it might be dead .

  • mine was like that...i wanted to see if it was moving..i sprayed water at it,it did moved but after few hours i tried, again and it didnt even budge,i guess mine was dead?

  • He's dieng.

  • HELP! I thought my crab was dead, bcuz his legs were loosely hanging out of his shell. I scooped him up, and threw him away. I came across a page that said, check the shell, if your crab seems brittle.. he might b molted so i pulled him out of the trash - and there is a crab in the shell :( I feel terrible for doing this... he will probably die from that stress now won't he? I dug a hole and put him in it, and covered him back up with sand. Should I also get his skele from the garbage?

  • 4 of my crabs haven't moved in more than a month. they aren't dug in, they don't smell and they're tight in their shells.

any idea what might be going on? kg

  • well if there not comin out then u might wana raise humidity but they will molt when they need to small crabs will molt maybe 3 -4 times a year and older crabs may molt only once every 12 - 18 months my crab just recently molted and she wont molt for another year don't be worried there not molting just make sure there humidity is 80% - 90%

  • what if there arms are ripped off and underneth them bacse thats how mine is and its underneth sand

  • it means there stressed check ur care such as humidity which should be 80% - 90%

  • @BERK549BERK Some crabs lose some of their body parts during their molting. It is okay if it happens. Just make sure you have another container for it to isolate it so it won't hurt itself. And find shells that are not painted too because sometimes they eat the paint and die. good luck!

  • my advice is to leave them be. it is a sign for molting. they are resting themselves under sand to get prepared. just make sure there are fresh water and food everyday. good luck.

  • @kawyew you shouldn't use painted shells

  • @MrArgyman the shell isnt painted

  • both of my crabs havent eaten and they just burry themselves in sand and dont come out, yesterday i pulled up their coconut and they were burried, they started walking but then went back inside and one of them came out only to burry itself deep in the sand, can anyone tell me why they do this ive looked everywere for answers but most of them are unclear answers, i would really appreciate it if someone could answer.

  • do you need to have a coconut for them to molt?

  • did it molt in its food dish? LOL. i love hermit crabs. Mine are Romeo and Juliet. (Only 2 so far, but i love them so much!)

  • omg thats what my crabs are named!!!!!

  • no worries. its claw will grew back in about 2weeks. yes. you may want to isolate it from others.

  • Hello!! I've been having trouble with my crab for a while, he molted a while ago but before he did it he bit off his large claw and most of his legs :S. everything but his large claw grew back, but I'm worried. Will it ever grow back? and can I put him back with his other crab friends, or will they hurt him because he can't protect himself? :O.

    Thanks!!! :).

  • it will grow back the next time he molts which will be in like a year

  • my hermit crab thunder is in the same stage but what does it do to it im scared =(

  • it sheds his skin its completely natural. they do it about once a year

  • okay, my crab i am very worried and confused right now .

my crab is dark red coloured, and it's eyes are open, its antennas and claws are all out . it wasnt moving so i out it in water, thn i touched the shell, and it almost fell out ., s y crab molting? or is it dead? its not moving.. at all .

  • yes. that could be 1 of the possibilities. he may be preparing to molt. just leave him be. you wont be surprised he probably be MIA for a week under the sand LOL

  • My hermit crab is usually very outgoing but seems kind of lazy lately and has taken to digging a lot. Today he buried himself so far under I couldn't even find him. Could he be molting? I've never had a crab molt before.

  • yes, there is a big possibility she is going to molt. it's also possible that she might be inactive due to the unsuitable humidity and tempreture in the crabitat.

  • My hermit crab has not been moving for days, but i know she is still alive because she poops everyday. Is she going to molt?

  • well she could be about to molt because they do get very inactive before they molt. what i would do is pick her up and if her eyes are chalky and white she is most likely about to molt. but some crabs are just lazy

  • you will noticed the crab will do these followings: 1) start to eat and drink alot than usual, 2) blurry eyes, 3) begin self isolation by digging into sand and hides in there for days. 4) less active, 5) etc.

this to do is to leave her be. Provide enough fresh food and water everyday. isolate her into another tank from other crabs because they will attack, eat and tear her to pieces during molting period. DO NOT DISTURB THE CRAB DURING MOLTING.

  • i just wanna noe when do they molt and what sign do they give when they're about to molt??

what am i suppose to do??

  • I'm no expert, and I only just recently 5 months ago began keeping hermits... But I feel like there are many things wrong with this situation including cage cleanliness, molting conditions and over all upkeep... o.o

  • poor thing in such a dirty, unorganized crabitat! have u heard of CLEANING?!

  • it was just pure luck i noticed the hermit crab was molting so i toook my vidcam and record it. the whole process is only about 10-15mins.

  • i dont know why my hermit crab came out. is it molting or dead? please let it be molting

  • it is not ur hermit crab that came out, it is the ecto, please check another shell! You might have a new crab!

  • How long have u waited till what what happened in the video?

  • mine molted today and i thought he was dead lol until i found him in side another shell

  • im getting a hermit crab tomorrow. im only getting one so if it molts no other crab can eat it. i will be very social with it. do i need to get two? i only want one.

  • When they molt, you do NOT want to disturb them. They will die if you disturb them.

  • oh.

  • can u touch them when they are molting i mean hold them?

  • NO. It will kill them. you do NOT want to disturb them when they are molting.

  • OH GOD. MY.

do not, they get a lot of stress just by a little thing, when they are molting. theyll almost certainly die while molting when you do that, the best thing is to leave it alone.

  • No and when they're done molting you have leave alone for a couple weeks until their new skin hardens.

  • yeah my crab molted on top and was perfectly fine i named em molty..he lived like 3 months but like i said the crab with the evil clown shell i named him the pint sized slasher.ripped em out and ate pieces of em so i incinerated his remains and put them in a mini vase..lol jk i just put him in a box and burried em

  • That is SOO COOL! Awesome video of something hermit crabs do that we rarely see! :D

  • My crab molted so I thought she died but then I saw her claw and it hit me on the head. MOLTING!!!

  • after my hermit crab molted the other one ripped em outa shell and eated em =(

  • They say its good to bathe them all together after one molts, to clean the smell off the new molter, & that they will smell the same after the bath. That way they dont think the newly molter is FOOD.

  • Happened to me about 2 years back, the fucking crab itself(that molted) lived for TWO YEARS, no probs or anything.

  • do you have a lot of sand becaus they need to bery them selves to molt

  • My crab molted w/ no sand or rocks or anything to molt, but it's little cage-partner ate him...little fucker :P

  • my hermit crab molted yesterday. it scared the shit outta me cause i thought he was dead then i noticed the exoskeleton moving and placed him in a iso tank. is it normal for them to molt on the surface?

  • it depends on how much substrate is in the tank

  • my crab started molting on fathers day and i thought he was dead and about three days later i herd something in his cage and then he started moving and i started to freak out and we were gonna byre him the next day until we found out that he was just molting

  • my crabby is molting and i am scared!

  • its ok jest put him an a iso tang give him food and water and leave him alone

  • lol

  • My hermit crab looked like it lost its limbs so i threw the limbs away then i saw videos and read info on molting and something said u should leave the exoskeleton there so they can eat it...so if they dont eat the exoskelly will they die?

  • they can, crunch up some eggshells and put the hermit crab on top of them

  • what does really happen when they molt/ and should u still spay water even if it is molting for humidity

  • when a hermit crab molts that means its starting to out grow his shell and that he needs to changes shells

  • yes they must stay moist wen molting

  • Look up The Cool Crab Crew

    It's my video! :)

  • nah if u change the cage befor they molt they will be stressed and hav a high chance of dieng

  • remember to keep the water and food fresh probably calsium and vitamins type food is good help. try not to move or shake the crabitat while changing the food and water while the hermit crab is resting under the sand after molting.that what i did ^^

  • When a crab is molting is when it is most vulnerable. Never touch them, never take away the old skeleton (they NEED to eat it for the calcium). Surface molting is a bad sign, it's likely you dont have proper substrate for them. Not calci sand, not gravel. They need sand to burrow in to molt.

  • my lil' crab didn't barrow him self for his molt. he molted in plain sight.

  • Wow...desides to eat and mult at the same time..that would be my choice incease i get hungry..

  • hermit crabs are sick when they molt my just molted a month ago nad i could not play woth my baby Carl! ( thats his name)

  • hermit crabs have average life span of 30-50yrs surprisingly if you take very good care of them. yes, they do die during molting as well. that is if they fail to molt.

  • My crab looked just like that! I thought he was dead! I threw him out! Omg! I killed my crab! :(

  • It's a common mistake. You can tell if it's dead because a strong fishy odor will be there when you open the crabitat.

  • and they fall right out of their shell when u lift them up

  • lol

  • leave her be.. she'll be alright... she'll emerge for food and water if feels strong enough.

  • one of my hermit crabs molted but she survived right now shes crawling what shall i do

  • haha nice

  • If your hermit crab is just hanging out of the shell and not moving at all, shake it and see if it falls out of the shell. My hermit crab did that and fell out. She was dead. :'(

  • hermit crab will molt when then it feels the condition or time is right. so dont worry whether will it molt or not. lager hermit crabs molt minimum once per year, some larger types dont even molt once a year. younger ones 3 or more times per year. it depends.pink colour? that beautiful. hermit crab's colour changes everytime they molt. colour may become brighter or duller. food also plays an important role for its colour like the intake of vitamins. check up some websites on hermit crab food :)

  • One of my hermit crabs are pink what should I do and will he molt im woried please im beging you

  • check see if its eyes are cloudy, that means its about to molt.there is also a probability that your hermit crab is dying..something is wrong prolly humidity or tempreture is too low

  • my hermit crab has been out of his shell half way. does this mean he's molting?

  • OMG THATS WHAT IT WAS!!!

I thought my crab was dead! good thing I left it alone just incase it was something natural... i know it's alive cuz i saw it's eyes sticking out of the shell... note that the crab was for some reason, upside down...

  • oh man, i'm going to freek out when my hermie molts and looks dead! and i can't play with it! what will i do!

    it looks so gross.......

  • leave it be. your hermit crab is about time to go molting.make sure you have enough fresh water and food for it to reach. remember dont ever touch or lift the crab. it's at its very crucial stage to molt anytime.

  • my hermit crab's eyes are white not the usual balck and he has been lying around for about 3 days.!

    help!

  • it means its molting

  • If your hermit crabs lose legs or claws, isolate them into a warm, quiet and dark place to rest. During this time, please leave them alone. Excessive handling can stress the crab even more and cause death. Losing legs or claws can also trigger an earlier moult. Hermit crabs can regenerate any lost limbs in the moulting process. After the first moult, you should notice a little 'bud' where the missing leg was. This will continue to grow after each moult until the leg is fully healed

  • What is molting?

  • well my friend hermit crabs get to big for it's skin yes it's skin so it sheds your welcome

  • molting is a process of growing

  • its already molted u might as well change the title to "what a molted hermie looks like"

  • any one know what molting is

  • its when they grow out of their skin and so they shed it, like a snake

  • most hermit crabs I've seen molt buried in the sand

  • thats not how a hermit crab molts

  • wow so exciting..

  • he didnt do anything

  • cool.
