instead of a 4/4 time sig. which you hear quite often these days in most songs, it's in 5/4 which means in one bar there is 5 beats. just tap your foot and count along
look into this, because it helps your rhythm playing immensly to feel the music in these different ways. For example, Spoonman, is in 7/4 during the verses.
by this point his voice was getting damaged by all of the years of incredible kick ass vocals. listen to some of his old live stuff, it'll blow you away.
Yeah this isn't the best version--Soundgarden actually split up less than a year after this. Matt Cameron, the drummer, is now the drummer for Pearl Jam. But you should look at other SG videos, the guitarist Kim Thayill is pretty great in the early days.
I kind of agree, even though a lot of soundgardens time signatures were out of the ordinary its not entirely progressive. Maybe the song Lateratlus from Tool going from 9/8 to 8/8 to 7/8 would be more of an exception for "math" rock, including the fact that the lyrics are written in a Fibonacci sequence. A lot of bands play in 5/4, this isn't nearly as impressive as the musicianship of jazz or classical music. At least time signature wise :P
if anything, playing in awkward time signatures can be a bad sign, why bother if it sounds better in 4/4? obviously this song is great but i dont like when they do it just for the sake of having a weird time signature.
Different time signatures can provide a different feel, which means a different groove (which is why they did it). If you need everything to be in 4/4, your musical experience is going to be very limited.
i don't think they did it just to be weird. it just happened according to kim thayil. and anyway, time sig. changes are generally a sign of just, skill in music as opposed to really fast wanky guitar solos :) and other things
yeah i'm saying that it's good in this song, but people that just do it to show off are stupid, what's the point of showing off in music? i think sometimes its as bad as wanky guitar solos, when it makes the song unlistenable.
his voice was always hit or miss in concert I saw him once live in rochester NY o all places and he sounded ok...then like a week later I saw him on TV singing live and it was piss poor....but yeah in this he sounds a bit like a Rusty Cage...pun intended of course....but this was one bad ass bad and was really cool to be a part of this crap when I was a kid
Yeah, with his style of singing, I'm surprised that he hasn't had surgery. You are so right. It was amazing to be in the midst of this music when it was going strong. Some outstanding memories.
I heard about that... shakes my head...Tim's going to ruin the careers of two of my favorite artists: Chris Cornell and then Stevie Wonder...Both could do better without him.
Noticing I'm oh say 28k+ views behind everyone. So I guess I'm a little late but great post anyway!

Amen, mandrews91a. I've always thought his studio work is badass, but live... not so much.

I love the 5/4 time signature in the verse... it's hard to find math rock with a decent singer.
sethpin67 3 years ago
So anything other than 4/4 is math rock. Right.

hard to say how bad ass this performance was based on the video. It was recorded on old technology. I bet it was awesome live.

how can chris go from this to "carry on"? :(
don´t talk about "evolving " as a musician and a person or cliches like that, cos carry on is a devolution, if anything! :(
