@sonicmandx12 How about you just pull out a loan, work, or find a cheaper local college. I did, and now I am getting paid to go to graduate school to earn an advance degree. You can't expect to have everything handed to you.
It's not just education... watch out for child labor laws too. Maine is trying to loosen child labor laws in their state... so not only would we have more and more uneducated Americans, they would be working at a younger and younger age. Keep your eyes on Maine. Progressives need to step up.
@donnyforte2 Progressives like a federal minimum wage because they feel that people should get paid a certain amount no matter their experience, age, education etc. So a person can have a chance to make a living. Well, allowing children of poor families to work increases the ability for those families to put food on the table or pay bills. Help the needy, that is what progressives want.
These cuts in funding will be devastating to all who receive the pell grant. In order to bring more awareness to this issue I would love to hear some stories as to how the pell grant has helped individuals and what it means to you. @JephRants I am saying that blaming one group of people (or ones that claim a group) is not going to fix anything. Breaking down the problems and addressing them directly is the only solution.
Congratulations America, you sure taught President Obama and those Democrats a lesson. Now you and your kids get crappier lessons in school, if you still have a school to go to.
@romanmir01 No one is going to get into university if they can't even get passed high school. Not sure if you know or not, but you have to take a standardized test to even get into one. It's called the SAT, or the ACT in my case. By having public schools, you allow opportunity for those who are not wealthy enough for private schools to have at least some sort of education. But even then, without help, college would be nothing but a dream due to financial reasons.
@Vanguard009 Yet most people who actually wanted an education prior to gov't starting with loans, they got the education. They paid out of pocket for it because gov't loans were not available. The important thing was that they were able to do so because gov't loans were not available and universities kept costs low.
Anytime there is public money in something, prices rise. As to schools - how are they federal issue? They are a local issue.
You have a point, people were able to do it without govt. support, but back then college was not needed to get a good wage now everybody needs it also there is barley any jobs to go around, that means people are having a hard time to get the money (unless they have rich parents). ALSO alot of people get in through grants, but how can you get grants when they cut education for high school where if you do not get a 25-32 on the ACT you have zero to no chance to get a grant
Cenk, As you remember from Turkiye the keys to education are PARENTS, not more money. I taught Chemistry at Kadikoy Maarif, and every Parents Day, all 45 of those moms and dads were there after taking off work and asking, e.g., "How is Ahmet doing in your class? Not so good? OK, I'll handle it." Here, until the parents start discipling their kids you can spend 50,00 per student and education will not improve. The atmosphere in the classroom is just mf, mf
@royerood You're 100% correct, but it's hard when parents are forced to get 3 jobs just to keep a roof over their head and food on the table -- that's if they're lucky.
Hopefully, when the next election cycle comes, these Republican governors will be voted out because of their unpopular cuts to education and attacks on unions. It may not happen, but at least Walker is out. There's no saving his next term from the looks of it and then someone can reestablish collective bargaining for public unions.
What makes you assume that republican voters are less educated than you? I am conservative and I'm an engineering student with a high gpa in a public university. I can assure you I am smarter than your ignorant liberal punk ass.
@christopherawesome SO TRUE... couldn't have said it better myself. It's sad that to get an education in America, you have to pretty much be rich. I'm part of that group right now that's trying to get an education and the idea of cutting that funding is a VERY bad idea, given that the cost of education is greater than that of what most people make within 2 years.
@ERAUPRCWA You don't have to be rich to get an education. I am not rich and I am going to graduate here shortly with two degrees in science, and next fall I am going to start graduate school and get paid for it. I know some people have it better than others, but it can be done. I now a girl who's family is poor, at 18 she had a kid, but after 3 years of factory and walmart work she is attending school part time and is slowly getting an education. It takes work.
@christopherawesome I go to a private school and i learn fine and we are poor a shit. No Gymnasium, No computers, No money, Ive been to private schools were teachers were paid little over minimum wage. In some cases private schools pay employees less under the table. Illegal immigrants make more money. My school has 3 teachers, elementary middle and high. I learn better here than public school. The teachers care about education here. Funny how poorer schools do better
Republicunts rely on the uneducated and the ignorant to get elected. Fact is, less and less college graduates vote republican every year. They know that people capable of critical thought don't vote against their own interests. So they want to keep as many people out of college and under educated as possible.
What makes me sad is the republicans who are not the rich but the regular folk, who support republicans just for the heck or it, or to spite Democrats or Liberals. Their egos have blinded them to the facts, truth, and the big picture. Instead they stick to their righteous indignation, perhaps to fit in with their families, friends, and community.
Whether you're a republican or a democrat is irrelvent. What's important are the rights of the people, the future of the whole country and its childrn
What makes you assume that republican voters are less educated than you? I am conservative and I'm an engineering student with a high gpa in a public university. I can assure you I am smarter than your ignorant liberal punk ass.
Why do they keep attacking education you ask? Because the more educated somebody is, the more liberal they vote. Keep the population stupid and they will vote repug in a heartbeat.
The GOP loves to cut education because they are planning for the future. The most dangerous thing for them is to have an educated population that is politically motivated, because an educated population can see through their bullshit!
If your money isn't going to the schools from your house and state tax. I suppose that means you don't have to pay for it since it isn't going to the use it's suppose to.
When Palin becomes POTUS, she will make cuts to everything including education for our public education is nothing but a leftist liberal socialist communist front teaching our kids COMMUNIST SOCIALIST PROPAGANDA! President Palin will fully expose the liberal agenda of all of our public education from K to PhD and have it completely privatized and conservatized! The Palination will educate all people in the virtues of Palinist Christian Conservatism!
Only 3% of the public wish to cut education. It is clear this is no longer a democracy, the people have no political power. America is ruled by the wealthy and their representatives. There's a word for that: plutocracy.
We must take our country back. DEMAND CAMPAIGN FINANCE REFORM
@David12King Actually income taxes imply that if you make money you should be willing to give a percentage of it to the government to support the services you apparently take for granted
It's due things like this that America needs to realise it is no longer the West's flagship. Yes, it is still the most powerful economically & militarily, but in terms of quality of life, you are too soically backward and the only immigrants you will get will be from the 3rd world.
they cut in Education because Republicans can go and burn books in the middle of the street like China and Russia did during their revolutions. Republicans have found a more "light" method: CUT FUNDING. The other day I saw on MSNBC a Republican saying they wanted to interfere with votes from students because they are Liberal. Conclusion: the less education the more people can get influence by a Republican Government and convince them to keep Republicans in power.... lie, lie, lie, lie, ....
Corbett will also not Tax the Hydraulic Fracking drilling companies for fracking on PA land. He would rather cut funding for education then make these Billion Dollar drilling companies pay tax... Think those if us in PA need to Recall our corrupt governor.
@Shinius "If the government hadn't acted, I would be eating Thanksgiving dinner at McDonald's," Warren Buffett said on CNBC.
The above is in reference to the tax payer funded bank bailout. Thank you little Mr. Tax Payer for keeping rich men rich artificially. Your contribution will be mentioned in passing. Have a nice day
@nilbud I really hope that's sarcasm. The gov't has to remove money from ordinary tax payers (and give it to the bankers) to make the tax payer richer? Thanks for the laugh
@BOZ11 Although 90% of the stories regarding bill gates sound like bullshit, I'll still give you that, yet, doesn't detract from the fact that he donated a load of money and helped a bunch of people. We struggle with microsoft's monopoly on software, while at least he helps people struggling against the monopoly of hunger, heh.
@grimordwow Of course he donated money. How the hell can one man legitimately spend $60B worth of ill gotten funds derived from anti-trust/monopolistic trade practices if not in philanthropy? You little serfs really do a good job of deifying the rich.
There's another reason why the religious right want to cut education. There's a corrolation between education and religion. The higher educated someone is (especially science) the less likely they are to be strongly religious.
I believe these sort of deep cuts to education at least can have the effect of creating what George Carlin called 'obedient workers' whether these uber-Republican governors are aware of it or not. In terms of deliberate motivation to cut education so deeply, especially higher education, I've always observed that many of these uber-Republicans have this anti-intellectual idea of such education having a liberal commie bias, so that's my guess.
@TheNeocatZone It's a nice side effect, but I doubt most Republicans in power are smart enough to actually be driving the idea of creating obedient workers as a goal. They work on a more simple level: one, they don't like people smarter than they are, and two, education is low hanging fruit to cut. (Education cuts are nothing new and not Republican only.)
I just hope this will start getting things like Khan Academy into a better public light.
@DeJach "one, they don't like people smarter than they are" That's what I mean; the motivation is to go after education out of ideological dumbness and the side effect of obedient workers turns into a weird, coincidental boon for corporate interests. That's what you call systemic corruption; the corporate system feeds into a certain mentality, and then the mentality feeds the corporate system. Ahh, the vicious cycle of it all.
@TheNeocatZone You're exactly right, it's a negative feedback cycle, and you can't tackle one side of it without also tackling the other. Same with black culture and black poverty, drug laws and a need for economic slaves (prison workers), etc. etc. And often the loops have many issues involved, not just a simplified two.
Any bets on when Obama will cave on Pell Grants? It's very hard to change the system on the inside, since almost every time it's the system that changes you. RIP old-Obama.
@DeJach I'm actually doing some prep work right now so I can do videos on those very issues and more and inject some ideas into the discourse on how to possibly tackle these issues. It's been a trial by error process so far, but hopefully I finally have a handle on how I'll do the videos. The Drug War and the prison-industrial complex are issues I've been concerned with as well right up there with financial corruption and the military-industrial complex.
California Gov. Jerry Brown is cutting education as well, Cenk. I'm a fan of yours, but you can't act like it's only Republicans doing the education cuts.
Please cut education.

Job, loans, grants included.

But I see your point.

It's due things like this that America needs to realise it is no longer the West's flagship. Yes, it is still the most powerful economically & militarily, but in terms of quality of life, you are too soically backward and the only immigrants you will get will be from the 3rd world.
310sucks 11 months ago
they cut in Education because Republicans can go and burn books in the middle of the street like China and Russia did during their revolutions.

Have a nice day
BOZ11 11 months ago
@BOZ11 If Warren Buffett were eating at McDonald's you'd have starved to death.
nilbud 11 months ago
@nilbud I really hope that's sarcasm. The gov't has to remove money from ordinary tax payers (and give it to the bankers) to make the tax payer richer? Thanks for the laugh
BOZ11 11 months ago
@BOZ11 Although 90% of the stories regarding bill gates sound like bullshit, I'll still give you that, yet, doesn't detract from the fact that he donated a load of money and helped a bunch of people. We struggle with microsoft's monopoly on software, while at least he helps people struggling against the monopoly of hunger, heh.
grimordwow 11 months ago

TheNeocatZone 11 months ago
@TheNeocatZone It's a nice side effect, but I doubt most Republicans in power are smart enough to actually be driving the idea of creating obedient workers as a goal. They work on a more simple level: one, they don't like people smarter than they are, and two, education is low hanging fruit to cut. (Education cuts are nothing new and not Republican only.)
I just hope this will start getting things like Khan Academy into a better public light.
DeJach 11 months ago
@DeJach "one, they don't like people smarter than they are" That's what I mean; the motivation is to go after education out of ideological dumbness and the side effect of obedient workers turns into a weird, coincidental boon for corporate interests. That's what you call systemic corruption; the corporate system feeds into a certain mentality, and then the mentality feeds the corporate system. Ahh, the vicious cycle of it all.
TheNeocatZone 11 months ago
@TheNeocatZone You're exactly right, it's a negative feedback cycle, and you can't tackle one side of it without also tackling the other. Same with black culture and black poverty, drug laws and a need for economic slaves (prison workers), etc. etc. And often the loops have many issues involved, not just a simplified two.
Any bets on when Obama will cave on Pell Grants? It's very hard to change the system on the inside, since almost every time it's the system that changes you. RIP old-Obama.
DeJach 11 months ago
@DeJach I'm actually doing some prep work right now so I can do videos on those very issues and more and inject some ideas into the discourse on how to possibly tackle these issues. It's been a trial by error process so far, but hopefully I finally have a handle on how I'll do the videos. The Drug War and the prison-industrial complex are issues I've been concerned with as well right up there with financial corruption and the military-industrial complex.

P.S. I just looked Khan Academy, liked what I saw, and subscribed.

California Gov. Jerry Brown is cutting education as well, Cenk. I'm a fan of yours, but you can't act like it's only Republicans doing the education cuts.
