Spot on mate. You've great patience, technique, accuracy & a love for teaching that comes thru. Thanks a lot. And you're right about the music of the 60's & 70's. Players like Alvin Lee, Blackmore, Rory Gallagher, Gilmour, Steve Marriot, & many others are often overlooked for their simplistic approach. They had an appreciation of melody, tone, & would often emphasize on one note in a perfect place, over guys nowadays that choose rapid successions of triplets just for the sake of speed.
That was a great lesson young man. Your vibrato was very very good, and the tone was spot on. Keep up with the fantastic music. This era had so many great and gifted musicians, particularly from Great Britain.
@55ou812 Thanks very much. :) I'm a huge fan of guitarists like Koss, Brian May and Dave Gilmour, to name but a few. It was an era of great tone, feel and experimentation too...before players became too obsessed with playing very, very fast.
@oteycolony ...well, I do now have an IPad app available from I-Tunes, under the name Bitesize guitar getting started. I will hopefully have an intermediate-level app out very soon. :)
Yep I'm sure he was numbed up in some kind of way. Note....Beginning guitarist, need to practice bending strings, this is your lesson. You'll love it or hate it.
I've seen tons of WRONG ways to play this song & yours is the only one that's absolutely right!!!! Why do people who haven't learned to play it right, think they can teach others how to play it wrong? (Arrogant amateurs make me sick!) This tune is probably THE most butchered song by amateurs on YouTube; At least you posted it 100% correct. Now if only the rest could be deleted, eh? That is except yours the originals of FREE or Schone & Shennan w/ Paul Rogers. BTW: where is the studio lead intro?
@2009korte sure...the guitar was sold to me with those pickups, which were EMGs. To be honest, I didn't think they suited the guitar, so have replaced them with Seymour Duncan '59s, which give a great tone, much more like you'd expect from a really good Les Paul! Much of the sound quality is courtesy of my ampilifier, a Cornford MK50, which is a piece of hand-wired, beautifully designed brilliance. :)
@BiteSizeGuitar I have been trying to get this lead right for a long time..thanx for making if for an old fart like me ( I'm 57 ) to get it right, clear and simple. I dont gig anymore, my son and I and some friends play at the house some but this really got me back into the playing mood. I suffered from depression for a long time after my brother in law died who has been playing guitar with me for over 35 years, and you have given me the spark I needed. Burningfire
Dude, "I got blistas on me fingas"! This is not a hard solo musically, but damn is it rough on the tips, I think my callous are falling off. I would not want to do this lesson. Anyway thank you for sacrificing your left hand. Well appreciated. I'm putting you in for the Commendation Medal.
@cacornett58 LOL!!! Thank you very much! My left-hand finger ends are now in several pieces and have been left to medical science for testing. Any awards to them are, in effect, posthumous. :)
Well played, sir. I would love some instruction on how you pull off that vibrato, its just where I want mine to be. I've been working on mine for years and its improved a bit recently, but its not right.

Excellent instructional video! And what a great tone as well. Thanks for posting this Ainsley - I learned a lot by going over this. The late great Koss would have been 60 in a few weeks time - And 40 years ago, Free took the IoW Festival by storm. This type of music is emotion packed classy and classic blues rock from a fantastic era. Many thanks for bringing the detail to the web generation!
@scottishmountaineer My absolute pleasure. I'm pleased it's been helpful to you. Actually, my Dad was at the IoW festival in 1970, and enjoyed Free immensely! I think the 60s and 70s gave the world the vast majority of its great guitar music. It's such a shame that passion, talent and skill account for so little in the music industry these days.
@BiteSizeGuitar Ainsley - that's my favourite music era - late 60s / early 70s. There was a massive explosion of talent and creativity then. Lots of British act, of whom Free were one of the best. Speaking of which, my favourite Free song is probably "Fire and Water" - have you got that one for us? I have come across tabs for it in various places, but I'd like to get an experts opinion! There is an incredible version of F&W n YouTube at watch?v=NH5wbYP5xkQ Koss's tone is sublime! Cheers
ITS ABOUT TIME WE BRING ROCK BACK TO THE WORLD! WE MAKE THE CHANGE MY BROTHER... Thanks for teaching me the song and the solo .. very happy to be rocking the stage soon to FREE's IT'S ALLRIGHT NOW!
@trottet hi! Have you tried using the dust from a sharpened pencil end pressed into the G string nut slot? It's graphite, and will help the string pass through the slot more easily. Also, stretch your stings in for a few seconds before you play. Tune up as normal and then grab each string in turn around the 12th fret and give it a bit of a pull. Then tune back up. These things do help. Good luck.
Thanks for the friend invitation, you're a fine player and doing a great (passionate) job explaining these fantastic "Classic Rock" leads and tunes. Players should know their Classics and you're lending a great helping hand, greetings Vic.
