This song became popular in the USA after the start of the De Colores Movement which is fashioned after the Catholic Cursillo movement. However, unlike the Curisillo De Colores allows all faiths to participate. Hence all faiths...all colors all people = De Colores. This is the song that is sang at every De Colores event.
the reason this is so popular is because crucillo, walk to emmaus, and chrysalis all use it as their anthem. supposedly it was written when a group of catholics got stuck in the country on their way to a retreat/three day weekend/ pilgramage (depending on who you ask). also its just a generally uplifting folk song that many people have had to learn in school
"De Colores" (literally, Of Colors) is a traditional folk-song that is well known throughout the Spanish-speaking world. The song was brought to the Americas from Spain during the 16th century. The words of the song are an expression of joy and a celebration of all creation with its many bright colors. It is also an unofficial anthem for the United Farm Workers union. It is a traditional song with the author unknown.
This song is popular for many reasons. One big one is because it is the "anthem" for the Curcillo movement in the Catholic church. This is a movement that focuses on helping to train lay people to be leaders in their spiritual community. The Curcillo movement has spread to other denominations since it first began in the 1940s.
It would be so cool to see this gentlman in T.J. when i go. I would ask for this song ang tell him about the blogging. hope you gave him a nice tip and a big smile.
Hola hermanos en Cristo, hoy empiezo el 4º día de mi cursillo de cristiandad. Estoy inflado como un globo de alegría (y de tanto comer, jajajaja) Muy buena esta versión, saludos para todos y....de colores!!!!
Oh, my God! This is my favourite mariachi song and this guy plays absolutely wonderful! I'm just happy to see this. Hope, someday, I'll go to Tijuana to see with my own eyes mariachi on the streets and enjoy my unique life...
This is s traditional song (I think originally from Spain many centuries ago, when Spain was still romantic:) Mexico still guards a little bit of this romanticism and thus you can hear it being played there, especially in Guanajuato, a wonderful place..
If you want to know what the song says, it is "Of colors, of colors are the birds that fly outside, of colors are the fields in springtime, of colors is the rainbow that we see displayed; and that is why great loves of many colors 'me gustan a mi' (I like) that is one verse of it, but he repeats the "great loves" This song really makes me cry happy tears...
I know this song from long ago...I'm weak with spanish but "De Colores, de colores se visten los campos de la primeravera" loosely translates to The colors, the colors they dress the fields in the springtime. "de colores son los pajaritos que vienen de afuera" the colors they are the birds that fly outside. It's a springtime song...the rest of the lyrics are just animals and the sounds they make...kind of like Old McDonald.
To ejlauffe: I just stumbled on this old blog. You're kind of there. (And I'm not a native speaker.) I've struggled especially over the chorus. "Y por eso los grandes amores de muchos colores me gustan a mi." I think it means, "Because of the great love I have for nature's beauty, I love colorful things." That is, it's about more than Old MacDonald. It's about the joy nature brings.
Flobots "handlebars" mentions this song in their song. I'm trying to find out why? I'm guessing the reason has something to do with what MujerGuitarrista had mentioned in his/her post.any info on that? a post would be considerate and very helpful. thanks people.
I'm sorry I don't have much info. This is just a song that I have always loved, and I requested this guy to play it while dining in Tijuana. I am shocked by how many hits this video has gotten, and how many positive reviews. There must be something about this song, because it has certainly garnered some attention. Hopefully someone will write a post that knows something about the songs origins and what makes it so popular. I thought this gent gave a great performance.
It doesn't have any real significance on it's own, just like riding his bike with no handlebars, tying a knot in a cherry stem, and telling people about Lief Erickson, pardon me for possibly incorrect spelling.
The song is all about how people can use their potential for amazingly different things. Watch their official video if you haven't already and search for a comment in quotation marks. It tells you where the inspiration for the song comes from and what the song's basically about.
ok im not disagreeing about what yout think the song handelbars is bout but in my opinion it was about how americans start off accomplishing riding their bikes and being prud of it then as we get older we accomplish so many more things than people in other countries but in the end it does no good because some of us use our ability to accomplish things for evil when we get power hungry and we end up leading into another holocaust.
@poochmon1976 I think the song "De Colores" is very much a peaceful song amongst the Latino-community and has been used for Migrant workers/United Farm Workers of America and their struggles to be treated equally when doing jobs in the fields and farms. I listen to the song Handlebars and one character is singing about peace and being of creative forces and another one is singing about destructive forces and what he could with it.
@poochmon1976 It is a traditional song originally from Spain, which became popular over hundreds of years in hispanic / latino cultures. So pretty. Has also had popularity as a folk song in the U.S. It was performed by Arlo Guthry, Pete Seeger, and other American fold singers. The lyrics are sweet and simple, so it makes a wonderful children's song. It talks in the first person about how much the person loves the colors in nature.
Originally I have no idea, and unfortunately I don't know this wonderful gentleman's name either. He played for us while we lunched. I gave him a big tip!!
Type "De Colores by Joan Baez" in YouTube. She has a very beautiful voice. I don't know if she is the original singer. As a matter of fact, anyone who can sing this song is great!
I am not a Latino, and I have no idea what the singer is singing; but I just love it!
Apparently, both Joan Báez and Arlo Guthrie recorded versions of De Colores, which is a "traditional" song, and I don't believe a true composer can be found on the net. Although many Spanish teachers have their students learn this song as an exercise in Spanish, please know that the Movimiento de Cursillos de Cristiandad of the Catholic Church, since its beginning has adopted ¡De Colores! as their theme. Don't live you life black and white, live it with all the colors. ¡De Colores!
"De Colores" is of Popular Domain. It is original from Spain. It has been always very popular in Mexico. Schools and universities have or had Estudiantinas, thay are music bands composed of students. Search for Estuidantinas in this site. They mostly play guitars, mandolines, tambourines and accrodions, and they wear the traditional middle age attire of Colonial Mexico.
That just made my day! What a beautiful song for kids of all ages! Thanks so much for posting this. You got to love Mexico. Those street musicians know every song you ask, put your hands up por este senor!
