I thought it was to check the time before finishing the level, if the time is not good enough then it takes more time to finish in the goal and replay the level
There is no real way to test it cause u'd have 2 do&see the exact same run 2 twice one where u pause one where u don't.
because u can only see the run once and u pause in the goal get caught without as much animation ur free to think u got caught early/ instantly, but who's to say the goal wouldn't have caught you at that time anyway?
The only way I can think of is for someone to do a simple and consistent path for a level many times with the pause trick and many times without. List all the times gotten and run a student's t-test to see if the difference in times (if there is a difference) is from the pause trick or just by chance.
Ive tried that on moving up(easiest and fastest lvl to beat) but the results are........inconclusive. At times without pausing u can get 3.12/.13 over and over for awhile, keep at it and u'll get .11 when u pause the same thing can happen. i even remember pausing IN the goal at 3.08/3.09 and still getting caught at up to 3.16! so i think it doesn't matter either way.

It does absolutely nothing if u ask me, but apparently it makes the goal catch u instantly without being caught late to the side or behind it.
so u get a faster time
but to me all it does is get rid of some of the end animation.
