Okay its funny and all but i wouldnt say its hard to predict unemployment in any year. People talk about unemployment as though it's a new thing, oh there was unemployment, there's always been unemployment and there always will be, doesnt matter if its 1930, 1980 or today, so I wouldnt say it was a massively uncanny prediction as a pretty standard elelment of any era.
That 2010 prediction was pretty spot on, only difference being Margaret Thatcher is now a man called David Cameron, although it might be argued that he is a cyberman, no emotions and all that.
Funny how this was made in the mid 80's looking at today. They got unemployment right. Wierd seeing this 25 years on with, although some spoof comedy, trying to see what the future might be like. It's like watching the 1960's The Time Machine film and seeing what they thought the future would be like now because of something else (nuclear war).
Well, Lenny's Doctor wardrobe predates what Eccleston would wear of course. Even though his outfit is incomplete minus a button collar shirt. It's still more original then Matt Smiths' outfit. Not that his Doctor is bad just his wardrobe.
I remember watching this as a kid back then, didn't pick up on the loaded social commentary about Thatcher's Britain. lol quarter of a century since this was made and there still hasn't been a black Doctor.
Lenny's the greatest! I remember when I saw this at a Media/Fantasy/SF convention when I didn't know who Lenny was at the time. I laughed my head off and became a solid fan ever since. RIBITTTT!
@NeonChimpAustralia I love Lenny Henry, but if they should ever cast a black guy as The Doctor, it should be either Chiwetel Ejiofor, Adrian Lester, or Colin Salmon. Lenny shold stick to playing Othello.
@VirgilwithanE Our Office isn't bad, but Kath & Kim was awful, the Red Dwarf they tried to make was beyond awful, and Life on Mars... just didn't work. And it should have worked. It had Harvey Keitel in it, for heaven's sake, and yet, no. Weird.
@VirgilwithanE Yeah, apparently there was a US Red Dwarf. There was also a US Are You Being Served too, but I don't believe it ever aired. No one has visual evidence of it.
I enjoyed the Lenny Henry show a lot, especially the 1980's version with Gina McKee starring alongside Lenny. Great comedy - wish the Beeb would repeat these.
That was so funny. Thatos lol that was so entertaining. Gordon brown would be a slitheen and David Cameron would be the Master. Nick Griffen he would be the Daleks..,. Wait he could not fit in he is so fat.
This skit was startlingly prophetic, really, given that Colin's "regeneration" into Sylvester went almost exactly as this one did (TARDIS gives a sudden lurch, Doctor falls to floor and regenrates out of sight).
Funny how Peri seems to have forgotten that she's American.
I can't remember the guy's name, but it's true. At one point, they were thinking of making the doctor a woman, and they were thinking of giving that part to Billie Piper.
To answer your question, the first black Doctor Who could have been Colin Salmon, best known for playing M's assistant in James Bond. Aidrien Lester was also keen, and quite frankly, I can see him in that role.
And in deed, Mr. Salmon played Dr. Moon in "Forest of the Dead" and "Silence in the Library," so he'd have been like that other Colin who appeared on the show before playing the Doctor. :-)
Why's he the worst? If I could travel with The Doctor I would travel with Six because at least he would tell me the truth - he wouldn't suck up and silently bear it if I pissed him off. But ah well. Opinions and all XD
@sanjouindacapo Compared to the rest, he sucks in my opinion. And if we're talking about our fave doctors, I'd go with either Tom Baker or David Tennant.
How am i racist?, i'm a white female and when i say "if only" i'm saying that the casting people for Doctor Who could be racist. I'm one of the most non-racist people you will ever know, you completely misinterpreted my words. And i'm a big fan of Lenny Henry,

Hilarious! Lenny makes a brilliant doctor! Unfortunately, this is exactly what Doctor Who was like in the 80s. It really was the worst point of the show's history: crap special effects, cliched stories, really sexist female companions, a doctor with no personality, etc. Still the new series is excellent and hats off to the Restoration Team working on the lost stories: The Invasion reconstruction was excellent =)
actually the new series isn't quite as excellent as what everybody thinks. Well done to RTD for bringing it back but the old series was NEVER slushy American-style teen cheese like it is today. Ok the 80s was crap compared to the brilliance of the 60s and 70s but today is far too girly and oversentimental. If I see the doctor cry again or another bland companion bat her eyelashes him in a god-this-is-so-sickeningly-trite way then I'm going to write-off the revival of Who as a bad idea.
To be honest, i can't really.agree. Yes, the new series has a different tone than the old series, and yes, it could do with a bit less americanization. (Could be worse: Imagine if Fox had picked up the show after the movie) and also the doctor could do with a bit less emo-isitc tendencies, but "slushy American-style teen cheese" is a tad exageratted imho.
Also, not everything for the 80s was crap: There were bright spots light "Curse of the fenric" and "Vengance of Varos".
All entirely subjective, off course. (A propos 80s Who: I think that Colib Baker is an excellent Doctor, when taking the Big-Finish-Audioplays into account).
Bright spots? The two episodes you've just named are regarded by some as rubbish. It's all a matter of opinion, I grant you, but they're scarcely generally held to be classics.
Being an American, I'm not sure what you mean by "Americanization"; could you give me some particulars?
Being an American, you are an idiot. Those episodes are some of the best writing in the series....ever. People like you give Americans everywhere a bad name. I bet you even voted for the criminal George Bush......
And Americans ALWAYS make crap remakes of great shows just so they can hear their stupid accents! Shows like The Office and Life on Mars were originally British, but the yanks HAD to remake them so they could make an even bigger idiot out of Steve Carell and so they could put some "unbeatable American action" into Life on Mars. Crap special effects??? That's a hallmark of the original series as a whole. But the effects were never the main focus, and they always did their job of telling the story.
There are only seven stories in the world, so slack can be cut there.
Romana, Tegan, Nyssa, Peri, Mel, and Ace were certainly not sexist; Tegan and Ace especially would eat sexists for lunch.
Davison was a gentle thinker, Colin was in-your-face pragmatism, and Sylvester was whimsical mystery.

Is that cameraman any relation to "Helena Bonham-Carter?"
