  • This video is a work of genius!! Great job Chris!!

  • i agree with what people are saying. Mr. Cunningham needs to write and direct a full length film. i need two straight hours of this twisted shit.

  • can't imagine this song having another video... brilliant.

  • Chris is amazing. Dude, I watched this shit when i was high and I was just like "What the fuck is that guys deal in the window?" "Why is he watching the kid?" "Why is he swimming?!?!" I tripped so hard when I watched the Chris Cunningham preview screen. just look up Chris Cunningham then watch the one that says, Directors thing, with the picture of the weird looking girl.

  • @ThatLoveGuitar

it was a Playstation commercial made in 1999 called "Mental Wealth"

  • yuh.......yuh.......yuh yuh yuh

  • Gorgeous.

  • damn chris is a genius

  • i think if you get into one video of his you need more and more. cunningham is a really compassionate medium of visual arts

  • thats true!!!!

  • The only thing holding Chris Cunningham back (as a member of the Director's Label, with Michel Gondry + Spike Jonze) is that he hasn't done a feature film.

  • I'm not sure if I'd have mental stamina to handle a feature length windowlicker, but I know I'd enjoy it!

  • i would imagine a movie done by chris would have to be like pans labirynth

  • Yup, this tune is so sweet, but the video is out of this world.

  • Underwater videography is always awesome but in Chris Cunningham's hands its just beyond amazing.

  • dope

  • so so beautiful.

  • Chris Cunningham is a genius

  • geez what's your problem? of course the music is great too.

  • I beg to differ.

The music and the video both create a form of performance art by combining the filmography and the music. The contrast of the woman's sweet voice with the eerie setting of the video.

Separately both artistic mediums are magnificent and worthy of our appreciation, but together the whole song is transformed into an entirely new experience, that which appeals to most (if not all) of the senses.

  • I like the videos of Chris Cunningham

    he's really good!

  • LOVE this song, so calm. It makes me want to dance.

  • that`s very ironic!

    really

generaly calm songs makes people lazy or smth like that not make them dance

    i love this song 2

great colab from portishead and chriss cunningham!

  • More of a trance like dance I was referring to. n . n

  • Anyone heard the new album? Anyone got a review? Itunes are useless with their 30 sec preview. Brilliant video :)

  • This song is really good ^^! Man, I'm a metal fan, but this is something else ^^

  • yeah chris cunningham (director) and the editor said that they spent hours upon hours removing the air bubbles that came out of their mouths... i could only imagine lol. if u waanna get weirded out look at a picture of chris cunningham(long hair) then look at a long hair pic of Richard D James (Aphex Twin)

  • beautiful song and more brilliant work by chris cunningham. love it

  • beautiful, both in song and video.

  • !!!

  • De toute beauté et quelle sensualité!

  • that's becouse the song is 12 years old

  • Scratching never gets old, Anyone calling himself a DJ who can't scratch should be seperated from all his/her vinyl and slapped to death

  • @HENN3H

  • Chris Cunningham is amazing

  • CC is a genius

  • nice.

  • Wowewawa...

    Me likey.

This combination of artists pleases me very much.

  • who doesn't have issues these days? what makes a genius is someone who can take those issues and channel them into creating art.

  • beautiful in everyway

  • Super stimme, sehr melodiös, schön traurig

  • que paciencia!!!

  • Chris Cunningham is such a great artist! The combination of his work and this song is amazing!

  • Damn, I totally forgot about Portishead. Awesome video.

  • jeeeh

  • :0.

  • deep.

  • its underwater just like pitt in snatch in his last fight

  • deep.

  • thanks for this.

  • i wonder how they make it look like their underwater....

  • By being under water.

  • Epic Lols?

  • yes, being under water, using chroma key and so on, like 300 film the girl dancing.

  • they are undrewater, you can watch the making off on portishead dvd.

  • Luv these guys. One of my Influences.

Go listen to our shtuff. We called BRAINZ in JARZ

  • Absolutely awsome,

one of my favourite songs, and videos of all time.

  • El video es lo maximo.

Me fascina el sonido de portishead.

  • Perfect mixture of sound.....sedative.....

  • If you want the new album message me.

  • It's not only Chris Cunningham's vision that makes this video, but Beth's singing as well. Portishead is amazing with everything that they do, and their new album will kick so much ass.

  • can't wait for the new album. Portishead is amazing

  • Pffft. Forget you, it was better than their original material. You want 'jazzy samples' and all that? Go cuddle up to Zero 7. Portishead are trying to go beyond the stage they've built.

  • i was an atheist before i saw chris's videos. now he's my god lol

  • Wow, Chris Cunningham, is really, i wonder what it would be like to be inside of his mind. Like what does this guy day dream about.....i hope I am able to consume is brain to obtain it creativity and pure genious. I am pretty sure I spelt genous wrong....

  • It's also pretty amazing hoe far hhe goes to make all this real. I heard he said that this was his most difficult video.

  • oh!.. que buen video, que buena cancion... gracias

  • why hasn't this man directed a horror film yet?!!!

  • why hasn't he directed a film in general yet. It surprises me that he hasn't. i want to see him direct something odd like little red riding hood or something. Kinda like how Tim Burton does a lot of musicals.

  • little red riding hood. That's a genius idea!! Let's start a petition and see if we can convince him. :)

  • this song is beautiful

  • I love this tune.

  • Chris Cunningham is just a feckin good director! really weird....but good =]

  • u spelt god wrong hes not just good hes a GOD! and im an apheist (however u spell it) so thats how good he is... i mean god* :P

  • afeous. like afeeus. or a fetus. o a fleeus fleece. fleece?

  • Can you please make sense in future. Makes it easier to understand you.

  • its hard to make sense out of something that doesnt make sense lol i do like 12 hours of work a day near enough which makes it hard to explain stuff cause of the count of me being so darn freaking tired im sleepy right now as im writing this... well typing :S ugh whatever lol

  • boy, thats a good vid..............

  • No he hasn't, he's done two I'm aware of.

  • hes about quality not quantity.

  • He's too left field to be commercially viable. A lot of his work involves niche artists (REAL artists imho) rather than bankable artists.

This is rather tame compared to what probably runs through his mind at night...

  • Yeah, his most bankable one was probably Madonna's "Frozen" He's on record as being unsatisfied with that video. I would say his most well known video would either be Bjork's "All is Full of Love" or Aphex Twin's "Come to Daddy". He's quite briliant IMO

  • im just getting familure with chris cunninghams work i dont get whats going on here though but the music is nice all i get is that some guy gets angry when that chick grabs that other guys or kids hand (who knows...)and that their swimming in the air...

  • he also did that famous "rubber johnny" video.

  • besides the bjork "all is full of love" video Cunningham is far more analog than CGI/special FX. He happens to be a CGI/special FX master, yet he makes analog music videos look like michael bay style over the top FX... by far the biggest up and coming director

  • and the bright thing is that he use simple and old school technics

    6 of 5 stars...

  • Creepy and disturbing...in a very good way!

  • Chris Cunningham is amazing.

  • imean ilove the strain but its so far away

  • danger love no mo

  • this reminds me of life not so much

  • oooh, buena canción... exelente video! bien x Cunningham :D

  • beth is queen

  • enchanting

    give me a thums up

  • me encanta esta cancion!!!

  • The watery movements remind me of Alien:Resurrection ...

  • great video! it visualy follows the atmosphere (the music & rhythm) of the song perfectly. I just love Portishead so much. I started listening to them when I was in highschool, and they made such an impact on my psyche and poetry, with their bitter-sweet melancholy, dramatic and beautiful mistique atmosphere...also, the voice of Beth Gibbons is one of my favourites. so fragile and yet so strong, so sad, lonely and full of longing...

  • the god-in-the-machine is revealed to be the human spirit digitalized and mechanized. daz

  • the god-in-the-machine is revealed to be the human spirit digitalized and mechanized. daz

  • Can't you morons shut up and listen to the music? Jesus.

  • Pure genius - Chris rocks and locks always!

  • One of the coolest vids of all time. If you like Iggy Pop you might like my weird Iggy vid on my channel also. Peace.

  • This must've taken ages to do. Filming that much underwater motion would require alot of takes.

  • every individual has their own taste and views. No one is more creative than another.

  • apestaartje needs to find something in life. Being bitter and bitching about something this beautiful is pathetic. Get laid, Get married, get shot. do something. If you don't like it, that's one thing. If you mock people that do like it, then you should shut off from society.

  • Lol- typical. I just said this is overrated, and to you thats bitchy, pathetic mockery. I just think its a joke someone can put together something like this and be considered genius, I never mocked anybody- maybe you should shut off from society.

  • Ahh I was noting that your comment was actually worded poorly then. Being directed more at the people that would like this, implying that you don't respect the people that like this... instead of not respecting or enjoying this vid/music. Two things that are quite different. Flame on!

  • 'implying that'... well in other words thats what I said wasnt it! Now stop being pathetic.

  • mayby YOU should watch other things by Chris Cunningham before you talk. Like Rubber Johnny.

  • Amazing! The flow of the water along with the flow of the music and the actions of the guys/gals underwater... brilliant!

  • Chris Cunningham is SO good at capturing a song and making it into something visual. He's kind of amazing D: This song as well as portishead in general, are both really cool anyway.

I LOVE how it's shot underwater.

I always wished I could walk around land just like that. D:

  • this shit is hot

  • i forgot to mention how cool this video is...oh wait i think u already have that impression :)

  • ha ha ha chris u mentalist

  • cunningham- legend.

  • FOR BETTER QUALITY,WATCH MINE!!!

  • love the flowing effect. it goes well with the music..that kind of suffocated smoothness.

it doesnt look like it's done in water

  • man you suck...

  • SHUT UP SPAMMING PIECE OF SHIT

  • It must have been hard to get the shots because it was shot underwater and then put in the scene.

  • In my top 10 favorite music videos of all time.

  • magnifique

  • Wow, I remember seeing this as a naive kid and thinking "Whoa, how did they fill a whole factory with water?!" Thanks to LotR, I now know it's all air machines and wires :P But seriously, this is a very haunting video, in a quiet, indy sort of way.

  • lol no there are no air machines or wires, it is really done under water! I've read an interview with Cunningham somewhere where he was joking that he nearly drowned Gibbons, but it would not have been such a loss, because she's just a musician.

  • Video is messed up.

Chris Cunnigham is one sick puppy. Clostrophobic as hell. I feel ill.

  • pretty awsome video, never seen anything like it

  • Chris Cunningham is a genius of the sublime school.

  • I love the underwater effect.

  • Isn't this a rip off of that song "Loving You"? "Loving you is easy cuz ur beautiful."

  • genial

  • just luv it

  • It's the best wideo i have ever seen, first time i sow it was while being on acid, it took me high. Thanks for this superb trip.

  • darling, that's because this genre of music is called trip-hop. enjoy.

  • this music is really... weird and... hypnotising i think i have never heard something like this

  • If you've seen The Matrix, then you've heard the music of the group widely credited with trip-hop.

  • thx for sharin that

  • if you like this vid check out mine called the sexmachines demo
