Well. Apart from the fact that it wasn't a burning church, but a burning synagog. So a jewish temple (sorry if that's the wrong phrase). meaning.. Ryan has a problem with God, both Old Testament wise as well as new... (or Tora)
And the scrolls the fireman took out from the synagog are not supposed to be touched by anyone other than a jewish - though I bet they'd make an exception in this case. They are anyway, often very old and priceless. DYK if a smudge/rip - they replace w new
Ryan's family/support structure had collapsed when he started talking to God. It lay the foundation for Ryan to rebel against God's wishes. In this episode, it seems like events were conspiring to dismantle Joan's support structure (family and friends). Maybe that's why Judith had showed herself to Helen- to help fight that.
