how does he make his violin sound like that at the start (and I guess throughout it as well) is it just technique or a pedal?

@PrestonDowMusic It's actually a mix of technique and pedal, but mostly technique. I think he starts the tune on an F# and quickly slides his first finger down to the open D (or Eb) on the D string. After that, the shaking 16th notes are the kind of thing that you'll see/hear in some Indian slide technique (look up classical/traditional/folk Indian violin and sarangi music elsewhere on youtube--vocalists ornament their notes that way too). The distorted decay of the notes comes from the pedal.
